Crown Their ***!

The marquee hoops matchup on Super Bowl Sunday was supposed to be Cavs/Pistons, except someone forgot to tell Detroit they were supposed to let LeBron James go off. ’Bron put up 21 points, but for the most part was kept under wraps by the Pistons, who won pretty easily. Remember those years when you could put a bet on who would score more: one of the Super Bowl teams or Michael Jordan? The catch was that Mike could have gone off for 55, so you never knew what would happen. LeBron is capable of those numbers, but probably not against this Pistons squad. Maybe next year it should be Cavs/Celtics … Chauncey Billups went for 18 points and 10 dimes, while Rasheed Wallace had 15 points and 13 boards … After the Pistons gave the ball up one time in the fourth, the Cavs PA announcer pulled out a “Deeee-troit Turn-over!” to mock the Pistons PA guy. What’s beef? … In case you were wondering, LeBron still has the Hummer that sparked all that drama he went through in high school, but recently had it upgraded. The formerly platinum-painted ride is now black and has all the new gadgets inside. “My mom didn’t like it, of course, because it’s now not the same one she got for me,” LeBron said … Speaking of the Super Bowl, we’re not gonna lie, when Chicago was up 14-6 we were ready to take the Denny Green approach and crown their ass. Props to the Colts for bouncing back (and holding onto the ball - we’re looking at you, Rex Grossman) and getting the ring … New Jersey lost on another last-second shot, this time letting Tyronn Lue hit a 23-footer at the buzzer to win it for Atlanta. Add Lue to the list of Mike Bibby, Monta Ellis and Cuttino Mobley as guys who have stuck the dagger to Jersey recently. Before Lue’s shot, Vince Carter (27 pts) had nailed a three to tie it up with 2.9 seconds left. Joe Johnson dropped 37 for the Hawks … The Nets loss put them three games behind the Raptors in the Atlantic Division. Chris Bosh went for 27 points and 7 boards in Toronto’s win over the Clippers on Sunday. Jose Calderon (10 pts, 12 asts) has been starting in place of T.J. Ford (17 pts, 7 asts) recently, but T.J. has had a couple good games in the reserve role. Calderon’s fantasy value has really never been higher. How long will it last? … Florida State knocked off Duke at Cameron Indoor on the same day J.J. Redick had his jersey No. 4 retired. Duke couldn’t have asked for more chances to win; they just blew it. First they let FSU comeback from a 17-point deficit, then they held the ‘Noles scoreless over the last three-plus minutes of the game, and in the closing seconds, down one, Duke’s three best players – Josh McRoberts, Greg Paulus and DeMarcus Nelson – all missed shots right at the rim that could have won it. Al Thornton dropped 21 for the Seminoles … We’re out like Rex’s handle…
