NBA Hit List, 3.20.07

IMAGE DESCRIPTIONRemember this guy? The Suns do.

It was a no-brainer that last week’s winner of the Mavs/Suns game would take over the No. 1 spot. But Phoenix messed us up by winning the game, then going out and getting handled in their next two, while Dallas bounced back from the loss with a pair of wins. So who gets the top spot in this week’s NBA power ranking?

30. Charlotte Bobcats — Why wouldn’t MJ be talking about Kevin Durant right now?

29. Memphis Grizzlies — Can they really go an entire season without winning two games in a row? Tuesday night has the Hornets coming to town, where the Grizzlies will try to make it a streak.

28. Portland Trail Blazers — How’s this for a three-game stretch: score 75 points against the Pistons, give up 65 points to Kobe, then score 77 points against Seattle.

27. Boston Celtics — Paul Pierce is averaging 29 points a night in his last three, which included a close loss to Dallas where the C’s actually led in the fourth quarter and a win over San Antonio.

26. Atlanta Hawks — In snapping the Pacers’ 11-game losing streak, the Hawks didn’t even look like they were trying. But they bounced back with a convincing win over the Kings, in which Josh Smith pulled off the greatest missed dunk of all-time.

25. Seattle Supersonics — They’d lost five in a row before beating Portland over the weekend. Rashard Lewis and Ray Allen are bringing it every night, but they need a consistent third guy to step up.

24. Milwaukee Bucks — Michael Redd is dropping 26.5 ppg this month, but three of the remaining five March games have him up against the Pistons, Rockets and Mavericks. The Bucks are 2-0 under new coach Larry Krystkowiak going into Tuesday, including a win over the Spurs.

23. Philadelphia 76ers — The 50-piecing that Philly took from the Rockets? Exhibit A that the hot streak is officially over.

22. Indiana Pacers — Good thing Indy snapped its 11-game skid against the Hawks. The rest of this month’s schedule has them playing Houston, San Antonio, Chicago Cleveland, New Jersey and Orlando. A loss to Atlanta, and the streak could have reached epic (i.e. ‘07 Celtics) proportions.

21. Minnesota Timberwolves — Ricky Davis scored three points in a recent win over the Pacers, and 33 in a loss to the Lakers. Somehow, it makes perfect sense with him.

20. New York Knicks — As Clyde Frazier might say, Sunday’s blowout W over Toronto was indicative of the provocative potential possessed by these Knicks.

19. Los Angeles Clippers — They need to get younger in the offseason. Arron Afflalo would be a great fit here. So would Corey Brewer. And Acie Law.

18. Orlando Magic — Broke out of a big slump with wins over Utah and Miami. J.J. Redick has seen 20-plus minutes of tick in his last three games. What took them so long to work him into the rotation?

17. Sacramento Kings — Ron Artest has been good for about 20 points, five boards and two steals since returning from his leave of absence. The Kings have lost six of their last seven, though.

16. New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets — Look at the League’s top five rebounders: KG, Tyson Chandler, Dwight Howard, Okafor and Camby. Did you think Tyson would be in that group at the beginning of the season? He’s only 0.2 rpg behind Garnett for the lead.

15. New Jersey Nets — If the NBA did move the All-Star Game to Europe for a year, Bostjan Nachbar has to be in the Dunk Contest, right?

14. Golden State Warriors — Six wins in their last seven. See what happens when they’re fully (or at least mostly) healthy?

13. Los Angeles Lakers — Kobe snaps the losing streak by hanging 65 on Portland and 50 on Minnesota. The Grizzlies are up next this Thursday, where Kobe could drop 70. But we think he goes more modest, like around 29 points.

12. Washington Wizards — So the Gilbert Arenas for MVP talk has been silenced, but dude is still gettin’ it done. He’s put up 30 points, six dimes and almost 2.5 steals a night in his last five.

11. Toronto Raptors — Didn’t look good at all in last two games, losses to Houston and New York. Kris Humphries even led the Raps in rebounding one of those games.

10. Chicago Bulls — Tyrus Thomas is starting to show why he was worth a Top 5 pick. He dropped 23 points in a recent win over the Celtics, and has been racking up some crazy highlights lately.

9. Denver Nuggets — Back-to-back piecings of the Lakers and Suns have the Nuggets looking like a contender again. Allen Iverson put up a “Remember me?” line of 44 points and 15 dimes against Phoenix.

8. Miami Heat — Despite the recent loss to Orlando, Miami’s 9-game win streak shows they’ve found their sans-Wade rhythm. But what happens when D-Wade comes back like he says he will?

7. Utah Jazz — Four losses in a row: giving up last-second game-winners to Kyle Korver and Udonis Haslem, and getting overall handled by Dwight Howard and LeBron.

6. Houston Rockets — Good thing for the Rockets that Yao is back (6-2 since his return), but we were liking the resurgence of Dikembe Mutombo. Now Deke is hardly getting off the bench.

5. Detroit Pistons — The Pistons had their five-game win streak snapped against the Mavs in a game that was close despite the absence of Chauncey Billups. Flip Murray has been earning his money with C-Billups out, though.

4. Cleveland Cavaliers — Eight wins in a row, and LeBron hasn’t had to score 30 a night in their last few outings for them to get the W.

3. San Antonio Spurs — After a 13-game winning streak, back-to-back losses to Milwaukee and Boston is just strange. Enough to knock them out of the Top 3? We thought about it, but not quite.

2. Dallas Mavericks — As dominant as Dirk has been all season, last week’s huge game against the Suns showed he’s still got some crunch-time issues. He did hit some big-time shots, but he also picked up a bonehead technical foul and came up short on some other needed buckets.

1. Phoenix Suns — How do you follow up winning the Game of the Year and establishing yourself as the best team in the League? Getting pieced in back-to-back games against Detroit and Denver. We still have to give Phoenix the No. 1 spot, though, after beating Dallas. Very hard to argue against Steve Nash for MVP right now.

    does that sound right?

  2. Alekx says:

What the bulls need is somebody who can score down low, grab some rebounds and that has some veteran saavy, I think is time to give Shawn “The Reign Man” Kemp a second call.

  3. shan says:

kemp’s veteran saavy went flying out the window wen he picked up the crack pipe and all them cheeseburgers

  4. Austin says:

As a Seattle native, not much would make my happier than a Shawn Kemp comeback. Kemp to the Heat, just for one last GP-to-Kemp alley oop … that’s all I need to see. If he puts it all together and does his thing this summer, maybe he gets a shot.

  5. Big Aaron says:

To answer your question about JJ Redick getting into the Orlando rotation: Brian Hill hates him. I thought it was something to do with hating Duke players, but he’s been having a season-long affair with Grant Hill so that doesn’t wash. The only other thing I can think is that he’s having relations with Keith Bogans. Maybe he joins in with B. Hill and Pat Garrity when they have their love-ins.

  6. Anderson says:

What u mean by after defeating Dallas Has Beaten Phoenix 2 times already and just by one lost they are already talking bad about Dallas Please….??

  7. Jesse says:
