Glass!!

Where does Rasheed Wallace’s shot from last night rank in the greatest buzzer-beaters of all-time? If you missed it, the Nuggets were up by three with 1.5 seconds left and Marcus Camby was inbounding the ball on Denver’s end. Tayshaun Prince got a hand on the pass, Rasheed grabs it and throws up a 60-footer that goes off glass and in. It wasn’t a playoff game or anything, but the first thing you think of is Jerry West’s beyond-halfcourt shot to beat the buzzer that has been replayed 12 million times. Sheed had 22 points and 9 boards in Detroit’s OT win, and Chauncey Billups put up 34 and 10 dimes. Melo and Iverson both had off nights, but Camby (21 pts), J.R. Smith (24 pts) and Nene (21 pts, 17 rebs) — or apparently Dwight Howard wearing a Nene mask — picked up the slack … Actually Dwight was busy handing the Knicks their third straight loss in a “must-win” game for New York, coming up with a huge rejection of a Stephon Marbury layup in the final minute that may or may not have been goal-tending. The block kept the door open for Jameer Nelson to shoot Orlando into seventh place in the East … Shaq scored 22 on the Hawks (going to the stripe 20 times) and passed Reggie Miller for 12th on the all-time scoring list. You think Atlanta was doing the Hack-a-Shaq? Ask Shelden Williams and Josh Smith. “It just shows how the other opponent quits,” Shaq said later. “Can’t stop him. Foul him.” For the sake of the viewers in the arena and at home, can someone pass a rule that Hack-a-Shaq only be allowed in meaningful games with everything on the line? … Carlos Boozer eviscerated the Wizards, giving them 41 points and 16 boards in a Jazz win. And where was Antawn Jamison during all of this? He was getting his shots up as usual (6-for-17 FGs, 20 pts) but between him, Darius Songaila, Brendan Haywood and Etan Thomas, Boozer was butchering anyone put in front of him … Luol Deng also went bananas, dropping 38 on the Blazers. Afterwards Deng told reporters that Chris Duhon bet him late in the fourth that he wouldn’t get 40. Didn’t Gilbert Arenas teach you guys anything? … Brandon Roy wasn’t in the building, leaving before the game to witness the birth of his child. Why didn’t this get one-fifth of the attention that ‘Melo got a few weeks back? Oh, right; B-Roy isn’t dating LaLa … The day after Shaun Livingston ripped his knee apart, those in the Dime office who hadn’t seen the injury were shown the gruesomeness (and that is a word) on YouTube. We remember all the gasps and yelling that went on that day (from us, not Shaun); anyone who plays ball on any level will have a bad reaction to something like that. With that in mind, Jorge Garbajosa had a nasty injury yesterday where one of the Dime crew said “It looked like his leg was on backwards.” We were gonna link to the clip, but we don’t wanna make anyone in the office sick. You can find it easily enough, though. But know that it was so bad, Jose Calderon did the “lay a towel over the injury” thing like it was an episode of “Law & Order” or something … Easy Ws for the Suns and Spurs last night, piecing the Grizzlies and Warriors, respectively. And for everyone who says San Antonio is boring, that’s two straight games where they’ve dropped 120-plus points. OK, so it was against Swiss Cheese D in Seattle and Golden State, but the numbers don’t lie … In women’s college ball, Rutgers is rolling through the NCAAs on the backs of Kia Vaughn and Matee Avajon — both Dime vets. We had Matee in one of our very first issues, and Kia was in our summer issue a couple years back, putting in work at Rucker Park. Rutgers also has Dime vet Epiphany Prince, who you might remember dropping 100 points in a high school game, but Matee (20 pts, 6 asts) and Kia (10 pts, 10 rebs) were the ones destroying Arizona State last night to get the Scarlet Knights into the Final Four … We’re out like Hack-a-Shaq from Lottery teams …

Sheed’s shot was rediculous. How the ball gets tipped to him right there at that moment is just unreal.

David Lee’s shot on the other hand while a great play was the product of the Bobcats not having a clue what they were doing defensively with .1 seconds remaining. How on earth do you not have 4 guys in the paint and a seven footer on the inbounder? Well they got the inbounder part correct. When the ball is inbounded three Bobcats are above the three point line, Matt Carroll is late coming over from checking Channing Frye on the left block and then there is Gerald Wallace guarding Lee who is a step behind because Lee faked setting an up screen for Curry at the top of the key. Why are you stepping up away from the basket to help on the upscreen stay at the rim for the lob!!! Nice job Charlotte.

Does anyone remember Milt Palacio’s shot as a Celtic in New Jersey in 2000? Nets ball, up 2 inbounding at half court, pass gets deflected Palacio picks up the ball and throws it in from half court. Easily the highlight of the Pitino era in Boston.

C’mon fellas, you don’t mention the nasty blow-by and in-your-face slam Rajon Rondo had on Bosh last night? The Garbajosa injury was ugly, but Bosh getting shi**ed on by Rondo was filthy.

  5. BostonRob says:

BTW, you guys woulda made Rondo’s slam the headline of the day if “J-Smooove” had done it….

Sorry, I’m a bitter Celts fan.

  6. Caputo says:

David Lee’s tip may have been the play of the year in the NBA. Check out my blog, it’s back!

For once that u r showing some love for the women’s tourney, could you please write Matee’s last name right. It’s A-J-A-V-O-N not Avajon. Makes me cringe to read my last name spelled wrong. Either get it str8, including the stats (Kia had 17 pts last nite) or don’t put out erroneous info.

    Update on Grabajosa’s ankle…

    - It happenned exactly one month after Shaun’s nasty injury… Who’s next on the monthly hit list?

    - The actual damage was displaced left ankle joint, a torn ligament and a fractured fibula.

    - Already had surgery.

    - Six months recovery period plus rehab plus reconditioning.

    - IMO both Shaun and Jorge took for granted their landing. Shaun was already running back to defense or for an offensive board before he even landed, and Jorge was too busy watching Al’s shot (plus of course their legs hit together.

also a link to videos of both injuries:
