BITE THIS

Someone brought it to our attention yesterday that Slam Magazine took a cheap shot at us on their web site. Actually, they’ve been taking shots at us for five years - no doubt because they feel threatened by our success. You know what? We’ve always taken the high road and not responded to the little jabs here and there. But this time they accused us of “biting” from their mag. We can’t let that go. Here’s the deal fellas: We don’t read your magazine (although you obviously read ours, thanks). We’re not concerned with what’s going on over at a teen magazine.

We started Dime five years ago because we were ballplayers and there wasn’t a magazine for us. So we went out and made one. Five years later, we’re still here doing our thing - bigger and better than ever. And in all that time, we’ve never taken a shot at any
magazine, let alone yours. We don’t need to. If you want to talk, talk. We just bring it harder. And the results speak for themselves.

Listen, to us, there’s nothing cornier than a mag beef (over the internet no less), so here’s one option: We’re both basketball magazines … let’s play ball. Name the date, name the court, and we’ll be there. We might even spot you a couple points - from what we’ve seen, you’ll need at least that much.

Who are we kidding? We both know you won’t take us up on the offer.

– Dime

My favorite post ever. Those dudes are WACK!!! Been waiting for you guys to step up. Love it.

  2. Big Aaron says:

Hey Dime, if you want a 7-footer who can dominate the paint, pay my airfare from the UK and I’ll come over and shut it down for you guys. Much love for Dime. Forget Scam magazine.

  3. DC says:

Oh it’s on, lol. I knew it was just a matter of time!!!

  4. Nico says:

They are just jealous, you have to be proud. The game is a great idea!! I wish they will accept it, I know you’ll kill them on a court, too.

  5. JT says:

Now THAT’s what I’m talking about Dime!!! Check ball SLAM!!! CHECK…..BALL…..LOL

  6. adam says:

Yea Slam magazine is nothing but a glossy package of editorial vomit. Rip out the ads from the mag and you have absolutely nothing left.

  7. F-SLAM says:

Now you guys should take on ESPN! Those guys have been stealing “Dime” from you guys for a while now. Straight steal. it’s bull sh*t.

  8. The Committee says:

What are the rules of the game? And will there be an audience? You could sell tickets to that sh*t.

You have to make sure no ringers. You need ground rules. Interns in or out?

Maybe it’s top 5 people at Dime v top 5 people at Slam?

    Refs?

    This is great.

  9. juan says:

    slam sucks pelotas

  10. R7 says:

    yo dime
    read dime and slam
what’s da cheap shot you talking ’bout??

  11. The Committee says:

100% chance the Slam guys are plotting on how they can stack their roster for this game.

  12. Taylor Johnson says:

They are scurrrrred. Everyone knows Slam will decline this challenge. Too bad. It would have been fun to watch or at least hear about.

  13. LT says:

    Any response yet?

  14. Andrew says:

anyone have the link to the stuff slam accused dime of?

  15. Hightz says:

nice web site….i never would have found it with out slam…

  16. Hightz says:

    i think im hooked….

  17. B.A. says:

What SLAM said on their website the other day:

“So, yeah… biters. Good stuff. I can’t really be mad, though; unlike GQ, which has to try (and generally fail) to be as good as Esquire, or working comedians who have to compete for stand-up gigs and HBO specials and may or may not be jealous of each other’s TV shows, SLAM doesn’t really have any competition. If we did, I guess, they might actually be blatant and shameless enough to bite us, too — like doing an “anniversary” issue of some sort in the past month or two and having Jalen Rose write a first-person account of his days in the Fab Five. Just like we did, about a year ago, in SLAM 100. Thankfully, that competition does not exist.”

  18. Sam says:

i think they might be referring to the layout. the newer one definitely looks more like slam. as for the content however, dime wins hands down.

  19. chrisGO says:

bet you Slam is already on the phones trying to secure their ringers for the would-be game.

    Johnny Kilroy, anyone?

  20. Diggler says:

Looks like this game won’t happen.

    http://slamonline.com/online/2007/03/the-day-of-gilberts-roundabout-revenge-on-the-state-of-washington/

p*ssys. is this how they’re addressing this?

  21. Chef says:

Dime ist to Basketball monthlys what Foxnews is to faux news.

  22. Andy Buckets says:

Man…those dudes can’t be serious. “biting?!?!” They are JUST now talking about Butler. I think you guys had something on them like two issues back!

I’d pay top dollar for a Dime v. Slam bball game!

  23. TEEN! says:

The teen comment has our whole office laughing.

  24. J.O.N.E.S. says:

Wow…you guys are just looking for an excuse to take a dig at Slam. I read and enjoy both mags. Slam was not talking about you fellas. The article was a blatant attack on GQ. Hell, they even mentioned QG by name, while the word dime was nowhere in the article. Sounds to me like maybe you are the jealous ones.

  25. karan says:

    cosign with J.O.N.E.S..
plus, i mean, how does a mag ‘beef’ be determined by playing basketball… that doesnt make sense… as someone commented on that link of the slam site, that’s like having the heat and mavericks write bball articles to determine who wins the championship.

  26. Justin says:

LOL @ the lame ass “take it out on the court” challenge. Way to avoid being corny. Anybody else find it ironic that SLAM was called a “teen mag” and now you guys make a basketball challenge?? If ya’ll really didn’t care, you wouldn’t have made any comment about it at all. I don’t particularly prefer either mag, but maybe if your mag sales were as high as SLAM’s, you guys could let the numbers speak for themselves. BTW I’m still embarassed for you guys posting a bball challenge to another magazine on your website.

  27. Jerrod says:

    Best post ever -

    Russ Bengtson says:

And while I’ve never read Dime in my life, I’ve also never had a problem with the guys who run it. And Pat Cassidy can definitely ball. So…yeah. Keep on keepin’ on and all that stuff.

If you haven’t already, you should read ALL the comments on SLAM’s site: http://slamonline.com/online/2007/03/the-day-of-gilberts-roundabout-revenge-on-the-state-of-washington/.

Some people talkin’ shit, some people showin’ love. Either way, Pat gets some love/respect.

  29. William says:

I’m a subscriber to both SLAM (been reading since 98) and Dime (for the last 2 years). I’m subscribing to both, visiting both websites, reading both articles because I can and I love basketball and I love to read behind the scene stuff. I have a lot of respect to both mags and I love the spin you put on each articles. If Jalen decided to put his spin on SI or even GQ, I’ll buy them as well. I’m a junkie like that. I just hope this is all just an elaborate scheme by both Slam and Dime to raise their profile somewhat. I buy both your mags because I want to read about basketball, players and rivalry not about basketball mags, writers and “rivalry”. But if it is just an elaborate publicity stunt, I’d say bring it on. Don’t just play 5 on 5, write an article about it, bring on the fans, bring on the brigade. I’d be cheering. If it’s not, please don’t let this “beef” filters to the mags that you send me. Last thing I want to see is to read about the “rivalry” in any of your printed pages. Both Slam and Dime are not bigger than the game. Same message posted in Slam website.

  30. docta j says:

SLAM has been in tha game for ten years. im jus sayin, it was the original magazine of this genre. that said, we should just do what we do, man. ive got subscriptions wit both of you, so lets cut the beef, aight? i mean, thats childish. dime should take the high road and not even respond to this. SLAM should have more pride than that, as should you.

  31. MP says:

    Served. Nuff said.

  32. Cory says:

Slam obviously took a shot at Dime. Even if their article was originally about GQ, they took a slap at Dime at the end without mentioning the name. That said, Dime had to respond. If they didn’t respond and people figured out that Slam was talking about Dime (which people did, if you look at the comments on Slam’s original article), then Dime looks like some b***hes.
On the real, I read both magazines. Slam is the original, but right now Dime is better; Slam’s fallen off in the last couple years.

  33. InsideHoops.com says:

If the NYC magazine people ever played each other, I nominate myself as one of the special guest referees/scorekeepers.

  34. bk says:

    you guys are jokers
slam been around for a couple decades or so
and for all their faults they still the king of this genre
the rest of you are just want a be’s
seriously ive read your mag a couple times
    its mediocre at best

  35. GhostNYC says:

seems to me Dime has a bit of an inferiority complex….nowhere in that article do they take a jab @ Dime…rather its all directed @ GQ

  36. MICHAEL NZ says:

Way to look petty Dime Mag. Shameless post. Jeez.

    Mag has no substance anyway.

I’m out like a poor imitation.

  37. Bron says:

who cares? its a internet beef…leave that junk to mark cuban and his flunkies. While I personally would happily play for the dime team, its just cause I ball 24/7. Slam is pretty much a bunch of ads on every other page BUT they have been here for a while. Dime doesn’t have the same prestige (thats college football 06) as Slam BUT for a company just startin, you are takin alot of their customers and fans. So who really wins? No one, ya’ll gonna keep publishin, prolly keep goin back and fourth, and its just gonna waste time. Just do what you do. Let them post jumpsole ads and all that crap, ya’ll do your interviews and just make loot and rep for all the ballers. Why stress over stupid shit stupid people write cuz they were bored in their office one day.

  38. J Crom says:

I used to read SLAM years ago…never really got into it. Picked up DIME and was hooked. SLAM pulled a no name rapper move and tried to put out the b***h diss (where you say no names). How can anybody say there was no diss “SLAM doesn’t really have any competition.” DIME and SLAM are the in the same genre of mags. Thats a diss you idiot. But why are people downing DIME for being creative with a soultion for the beef. Or downing them for saying something about it period when you know if someone was talking mess about you, you would handle that. Also why are people from the SLAM site coming to the DIME site with the same comments they had on the SLAM site, either that or people need to (ironically) quit biting peoples comments from the rival site.

  39. Cory says:

Why do people keep insisting Slam didn’t diss Dime? Yeah the article in question was about GQ mostly, but the diss at the end was obviously about Dime.

“SLAM doesn’t really have any competition. If we did, I guess, they might actually be blatant and shameless enough to bite us, too — like doing an “anniversary” issue of some sort in the past month or two and having Jalen Rose write a first-person account of his days in the Fab Five. Just like we did, about a year ago, in SLAM 100.”

Dime’s last issue with LeBron on the front was their Anniversary issue (5 years, I think) and they had a thing where Jalen Rose talked about being in the Fab Five. Don’t you people read beyond the first 2 paragraphs?

  40. William says:

j Crom said “Also why are people from the SLAM site coming to the DIME site with the same comments they had on the SLAM site”
I’ve been subscribing to Dime for 2 years (no exposure in Canada before then), reading Smack since 3-4 years ago, reading slamonline since 5 years ago and been reading Slam magazine for 9 years, insidehoops since 5 years ago, hoopshype since 4 years ago. I’m a true basketball junkie yes I am. I enjoy both Dime and Slam just the same, because above all I respect the game and respect what the writers do. I’m not ‘people from SLAM site’, no siree. I just would like to go back to enjoying the game and the articles about the game. Not magazines beef with each other.

  41. Respect says:

Are they playing ball or not? The dig at Dime was real. I hate that sh*t when they don’t say the name. At least Dime came right out and said it. I respect that. I’ve seen Slam take concepts and shite from Dime too. it seems like they’ve gone more lifestyle and tried to be a little more Dime like in the last few issues. I also think a little friendly beef is a good thing. As readers we want the magazines to consistently try and top each other. I think Dime doing their thing and pushing the envelope will make Slam work harder. They might need that. If Dime is using Slam as motivation, I think that’s dope. I enjoy reading Dime every issue. Slam’s worn on me. Maybe I’m getting older or maybe it’s just not as good or maybe they’ve gone stale. No matter what, this will make everyone want to stay at the top of their game and get better and better.

  42. dean16 says:

I’ve read Slam since day 1 (Larry Johnson was on the cover!), but they fell off long ago! I’ve been reading Smack since the days of hoopstv.com. I USED to be a fan of Slam, but I’m sure I’ll ALWAYS be a fan of Dime. This so-called “beef” can’t be settled with words; take it to the court and post the video on youtube ASAP!

  43. phileus says:

Cant believe people dont see the diss… its not straight up its just hidden there, which is really childish… its obvious if you saw last issue of DIME.

Obvious SLAM doesnt respect DIME, not even worth being “competition”… well I dont read SLAM so dont know if its good but, what they wrote is really sad. No respect for them. Just cause youve been around for a long time doesnt mean you take shots at people coming up. Hope they accept the challenge.

  44. buddha says:

yo i do you guys know how to freaking read they were taking shots at GQ for GQ took a shot at them… cmon guys! man thats some crazy shit you’re talking about. slam vs dime in a basketball game…i would love to see that…but a write off would be better…. issue against issue of both magazines…. but you guys have to admit it SLAM started it all…..

  45. J Crom says:

william said “I just would like to go back to enjoying the game and the articles about the game. Not magazines beef with each other.”
I’d like the same thing. I was referring to a comment downing DIME on this site that I also read word for word on the SLAM site. You weren’t the only one to post the same comment in both. If a ball game is gonna settle the rivalry go head and do it.

  46. Iva Biggan says:

whats up and shit, you mo-de-fo’s are whackers
I’ll take you to the hoop and posterize your broke ass ,yo

  47. Scott McNobby says:

I think Iva Biggan’s comment succinctly summed all this up. Guys, you’re degrading yourselves.
