So we came across this video of Brittney Griner, a high school sophomore in Houston, dunking during practice, and we’ve been arguing about it all morning. Is it legit? One camp in the office says the rim is lowered because Brittney’s making it look too easy; the other says her being 6-5 and those crazy long arms make it legit. And consider the fact that the 15-year-old sophomore has dunked in a game before. Check it out and tell us what you think…

I don’t doubt that Brittney can dunk on a 10-foot rim, or that she can dunk easier than C. Parker. But this just looks fugazi. She’s barely getting in the air, going off the glass like it’s nothing … This clip has to be on a lowered hoop.

i question the video, b/c the girls are too hyped if she does it all the time. And the off the glass seemed too easy. Vince is 6′6″ and he has to jump hard than that. She is catching those really easy. It looks as though she has a nice handle though for a woman her size.

heck nawwwwwwww this ain’t real. im 15(freshman) and 6′6” and i need more of a gather step than that to go glass, but still, she looks like she could tie her shoes w/o bending over. the female tayshaun prince. those were pretty decent dunks, too, even if they WERE on a 9′6” rim.

Rim has gotta be lowered. Her arms are long and she’s 6 foot 5, but its too easy. I got friends with that type of height and reach on regular size rims they ain’t goin glass that easy. and anybodys handle will look that great in a non game nobody on them situation. I’m not so good at math, but let’s see if this works out…
She’s 6′6″ (h)
She’s got a 70″ reach or 5′8″ from finger tip to finger tip - roughly 2′4″ per arm (we’ll call this ‘r’)
So: (h) + (r) = 9′
She’s only got to get up about 14 or 15 inches to throw down, which she certainly looks like she’s doing.
Plus, she’s 15 and probably better than you are.

Judging from our own research (okay, we measured the intern), her neck and head could be 10″ long. So (h) + (r) = 8′
She’d probably need something like 30 inches of hops to clear the ball over the rim.

Fake or not, the difference between her dunks and just about every other girl I’ve seen are her mechanics. She jumps fluidly and without the hitch in her approach that Parker had.

The rim is legit, any of you guys that actually have been in a high school gym know that the rims in that gym can be raised up and lowered back in to position by a pully system. But actually lowering the rim under 10ft requires a lot of work and a lot of people. That said there is no way in hell the boys varsity coach will allow anyone play with the height of the rim. Go to any high school gym and you will realize how hard it is to actually change the height of the rim.

It seems legit. Don’t hate. Girls are getting better, so it’s bound to happen sooner or later: girls will start to move and jump like boys on the court. Brittney looks very fluid in the video just handling the ball and goofing around. It’s not a stretch to imagine her dunking motion to be fluid as well. Besides, camara angles and compressing a 3-D image into 2-D can play tricks with the eye. So, yeah, I say the lil gal be dunkin real smooth.
Her teammate cheerleaders are just yukkin it up for the camara. Pay them no mind.
And to the cats in the comment section 6-5 or over who can’t dunk. Like I said, don’t hate. Dunking is not a talent, it’s a skill. Height doesn’t naturally make you a dunker. Practice does. That explains the difference between the gal from Michigan State University missing all those dunks, and Candace Parker or young Brittney making theirs. It’s clear from the video that the MSU girl has never really practiced dunking. So some 6-5 people, both girls and boys, can’t dunk, while some 5-9 people can dunk, because they’ve practiced it.
Ok, I’m done rambling. You get the point. Game recognize game.

The rim isn’t lowered… the girl can get up! And much shorter girls than her are throwing down dunks!
Charlotte Smith…who’s 6 foot even used to throw down dunks in warm ups before UNC games… although she never dunked in a game… she did hit the buzzer beater to win the 1994 national championship for the Tarheels.
Back to Brittney Griner… She grew 6 inches this year and wears size 16 shoe… which means she’s still growing!! SO get used to seeing her dunk! This is only the beginning of what you’re going to see from her!! Maybe the women’s game will finally get above the rim!!

ALL over 6 feet, all supposed to be the chick version of desmond mason, none have really done much than barely dunk 1 or 2 handed on fast breaks. When candace catches it on the post, drop steps and then cocks it back and dunks it on the 6′7 duke girl bales, then you gimme a shout. Until then lets not make a 6′5 girl dunking 1 handed rocket science when theres 5′8 guys winnin dunk contests. And as a dunker myself (I have a 38 inch vert) at 6′4, I don’t care if your a guy or girl, if your over 6′0 you should be able to dunk at least 1 handed, so its nothing impressive yet.

it’s ridiculous how guys out of one side of their mouth say that the women’s game sucks, because they can only play below the rim, and then, out the other side their mouth say that a high school sophmore dunking effortlessly is nothing. pick one and stick with it. furthermore, the disbelief is telling. first, it obviously is something (especially considering many a dude 6′ plus can’t or don’t dunk, HS, college, or NBA). secondly, it’s sad that you can’t give credit where it’s due. instead, you hurl insults, calling her Joakim Noah, saying the rim is lowered and the such. get over yourself. it’s real simple. she can dunk and it’s pretty dayum impressive.

B: The 70″ inch finger tip to finger tip arm span has to be erroneous. I’m 6′ 4″ and I have a 77″ arm span, and my arms don’t look anywhere nearly as long as her Tayshawn-Prince-like appendages.

It’s real, I saw Brittney Griner at the Heart of Texas Showcase AAU tournmanet. She is very athletic. In couple of years I’m sure you’ll get to see her do it on live TV. Even though she is 6′5 or 6′6, remeber she is a woman, her center of gravity is differnrt from a man. She’s going to change the way peolpe see womens basketball.

I saw the video and it is real. I think it is a shame that most people do not believe it is real. Women can dunk, and not everyone over six feet should be able to dunk. Some people just can not. I am six feet and I can grab the rim, but my hands are not wide enough to palm a ball. Remember she is still a kid and it is ignorant to talk about her in such a way. I am glad that she gets good grades and athletic. Be blessed.

The dunks from Griner ARE legitimate. She just attended the Baylor elite camp and she showed off a lot of dunks. The Baylor rims are all standard height — NOT lowered.
Griner committed to Baylor during the camp. Her father said that she is still growing and could be 6′10 or 6′11 when she graduates from high school in two years.

When you’re 6′ 6″ with a wingspan like Scottie Pippen, you don’t need to be a great leaper to dunk. The girl is GOOD.

This girl’s vert probably like 18-20 inches, which is impressive for a female. Her being the Yao Ming of the female race doesn’t hurt either.
