For more than a couple members of the Dime crew, the NBA Draft is the first date circled on the basketball calendar every year. Last night’s draft had the right combination of star power, surprises, blockbuster trades and a great New York crowd to rank right up there with the memorable drafts we’ve been to over the years … As you know, Greg Oden went No. 1 to Portland and Kevin Durant was snatched up by the Sonics with the No. 2 pick. But Greg and KD’s respective teams are now looking a lot different than they did 24 hours ago. After the Blazers got their franchise cornerstone in Oden, they traded their previous alpha dog, Zach Randolph, to the Knicks (plus Fred Jones and Dan Dickau) for Channing Frye and Steve Francis. The Sonics, meanwhile, took Durant and then traded its reigning superstar, Ray Allen, to Boston (plus second-round pick Big Baby) for No. 5 pick Jeff Green, Delonte West and Wally Szczerbiak … Funny how fast Frye went from being untouchable in trade talks to being handed his plane ticket outta town … Who was that in the Blazers war room holding up a No. 52 jersey when they picked Oden? Where did that one come from? … Seen in the crowd: Spike Lee (of course) and Felipe Lopez, who was rolling with Al Horford’s legion of supporters waving Dominican flags. When Al got picked third by Atlanta his pops, former pro Tito Horford, jumped from the table and stretched his arms out like D-Wade in the Converse ads, then broke out his flag and got the crowd going … Acie Law’s girl was hot, Marco Belinelli’s girl was insanely hot, and Nick Young’s girl was — as Naomi would say — “Foine with a capital ‘O’.” … We knew Joakim Noah would come out looking ridiculous, and he didn’t disappoint. Between the hair, the bow tie and the seer-sucker suit, Joakim was a wrap. David Stern appeared to do the handshake/pep talk with Noah a little longer than usual, probably telling Noah he’d be watching him like a hawk … Fact: Oden and Durant were the first American-born college players to be taken 1-2 since K-Mart and Stro Swift back in 2000 … During a “Timberwolves stink” montage, someone sitting near us asked out loud, “Who is this guy, Randy Wittman?” We just hope they weren’t an actual basketball media person … Like we thought he would, Corey “Perma-Smile” Brewer was cheesing all night long. When the Wolves picked him at No. 7, it looked like his cheeks were about to bust … Just to irritate the Knicks fans in the house, ESPN showed a graphic of the ‘05 Eddy Curry-to-New York trade. Although the booing wasn’t as bad this year because everyone in NY likes Curry now … About the Zach-to-NY trade: Between Randolph and Curry, the Knicks have the slowest, no-defense-playingest front line ever. Now all they need to round it out (pun intended) is Mike Sweetney … After the Randolph trade was announced, Spike and David Lee were shown and they were clearly real happy with the deal. That’s weird; we thought David and Frye were like best friends … Shaking Stern’s hand after going to Atlanta at No. 11, Acie Law gives a very awkward thumbs-up. It looked like Acie figured he had to do something with his off-hand, went to the thumbs-up, and before it was all the way up he regretted it, but it would look weird if he pulled it back … Rodney Stuckey was being secretive enough about his suit to make us curious. And the kid delivered, rocking a cream-colored ensemble with matching cream shoes. Very nice … Nick Young took “Last Guy in the Green Room” honors, going 16th to the Wizards. Nick is like Brewer, though, in that he’s never not smiling, so it never seemed to bother him. We’re kinda worried about Nick going to play with Gilbert Arenas, though. Nick laughs at everything, and Gil might kill him with the way he’s always joking … In the time between the Warriors pick at No. 18 and the Lakers at No. 19, all the announcers talked about was Kobe. Not a word about whom L.A. might pick. (They took Javaris Crittenton) … With the crowd chanting “We Want Russ!” for Russ Granik, Stern hands the second round over to Adam Silver. And we’re 98 percent sure that in between the rounds, a crew came out and elevated the podium from Stern’s height to one that looked better on the taller Silver … Fun fact: second-rounder Jermareo Davidson’s mom is named Madonna … Someone in the crowd: “Josh McRoberts likes d***!” They hate Duke kids around here … Programming note: we’ll be dropping draft grades for every NBA team early this morning, so make sure you come back to the site to see how your team did last night … We’re out like Stevie Franchise …

Wow the blazers did well for this draft !! They completely revamped their team. I like these moves. Its a solid foundation for years to come (cept for francis of course)
But whats up with Chicago taking Noah? NOAH?!?! Does Paxson even realise what his team needs at all?!?! Why pass on Hawes when they already got better versions of Noah (Big Ben and Tyrus). I hope they deal him for a better low post scorer.

Gene,
Hawes only averaged 3 more points that Noah, Plus he is a winner an not another baby brad miller. What other big men you got that are scorers at number 9. please Noah knows hes gotta work on his post game. But he already has the intangibles. (winner 2 years, hustle, blocks, good d). If he had of come out last year he would have been top 3 pick.

good eye guys, marco belinelli’s lady friend was definitely smoking hot, too bad the espn cameras zoomed away lol.. between spike, the ny crowd, bucher’s trade announcement, and GMs like mitch/MJ living up to their reputations of delivering in the clutch, id say this draft was just slightly more entertaining than the *nba finals.

You cats are frakkin hilarious! When I saw GS pick a guard in the first round, I knew the team was planning a move — I just wasn’t sure which move. We absolutely love J-Rich here, but we want to win more. I wonder if the trading is done — in other words, is GS stil going after KG? A package of Brandan Wright, some star other than Baron, and (god willing) Adonal Foyle should be enough for Minnesota to get up off of KG (so long as he’s willing to renegotiate). Another question, what do you make of what Portland did and how it’s gonna work out.
PS: Uh — could someone, uh, post a few photos of the draftees “dates”?

I’m not usually into white girls, but man, Belinelli’s woman was perhaps *too* attractive in that “old world, classy, cultured, probably not into really freaky stuff, but still too hot to break up with her” type of way.
