As hyped as we were to watch Team USA’s intrasquad scrimmage last weekend, the next scrimmage might be even more intriguing. USA Basketball is apparently in the process of putting together a team of young guys to take on the senior team next month to help them prep for the Olympic qualifying tournament. Al Jefferson is already in, says the Boston Globe, and Brandon Roy’s name was mentioned as well. Who else would we wanna see on that team? T.J. Ford, Randy Foye, Monta Ellis, Rudy Gay, Josh Smith, Danny Granger, Andrew Bynum and Greg Oden sounds like a good start along with Jefferson and Roy … Team USA (not the pros) dropped its Pan Am Games opener to Uruguay and then blew a double-digit lead and lost to Panama, eliminating them from medal contention. Isn’t it crazy that we’re at a point where the U.S. can lose like this in the Pan Am Games and it’s not even a huge story anymore? At the same time, it’s still a little unsettling that a squad with guys like D.J. White, Roy Hibbert and Drew Neitzel in the mix can get shut out … In yesterday’s Smack we talked about Chris Paul, Rudy Gay, Andre Iguodala and Gerald Wallace doing a motion capture session for NBA 2K8 at Rucker Park, then getting into some 2-on-2. That sparked a lot of talk from our readers about whether it was smart for those guys — especially CP3 — to be playing pickup ball outdoors in the offseason. We look at it this way: Obviously Paul was at more of a risk, seeing as we were told it was the first time he’d played ball since his foot surgery and he clearly has to get back in shape, but for these guys, a quick pickup game at Rucker is light work. Iguodala, for example, is a workout beast; Wednesday night was far from vigorous compared to what he’s doing the rest of the summer … Greek pro squad Olympiakos had reportedly been interested in Jannero Pargo, but since Pargo isn’t really trying to come across the water, they’ve turned their attention to Keith McLeod … On that note, we caught some Euroleague games on TV yesterday. One was a championship game from Turkey featuring Drew Nicholas (remember this from Maryland?) and Marcus Haislip. Then we saw part of a game where Marc Gasol and Khalid El-Amin were playing … According to the San Jose Mercury News, the Warriors have been raving about Toby Bailey’s summer-league showing so much that he’s likely to get an invite to training camp. Toby last played in the League in 2000 with the Suns. If you didn’t catch this year’s summer league, the next time you see Bailey with Golden State he’ll look a lot different than the guy you remember from UCLA … With Shaq and Damon Jones already in the stable, Chinese apparel company Li Ning made some more moves recently, inking Chuck Hayes and the Spanish and Argentinian national hoop teams to endorsement deals … The New York Daily News reported that the two bookies involved in the Tim Donaghy case both went to high school with Donaghy in Pennsylvania. No chance this story goes away by the end of the year, right? … Justin sent this to everyone yesterday morning as he was parking his car by the office: “Steve Nash just skateboarded past my car.” … We found out a few more of the Elite 24 participants yesterday who will be at Rucker Park next month: Cali big man Renardo Sidney, Ohio forward Delvon Roe, Oklahoma guard Xavier Henry, Virginia forward Ed Davis and Cali guard DeMar DeRozan … No doubt you heard the news yesterday about Wake Forest coach Skip Prosser, who passed away at age 56 due to an apparent heart attack. The news hit everyone hard; Prosser was one of the genuine nice guys in the coaching industry. We’d just talked to him recently for an upcoming bit in the magazine. In that interview he told us, “As a coach, I see myself as a teacher. I’m still a schoolteacher, and someone that tries to stress the right values. I have great relationships with my former players. I give them freedom on offense, but I’m demanding as well – I think the best teachers are the ones who are the most intolerant, who push you to be great, and I think our graduation rate is a testament to that fact that we care about you off the floor as well.” When he talked about Wake Forest, the first thing he’d always mention was the school’s academic reputation before basketball. Skip will be missed …

Here’s an early review for the game NBA 2K8:
“It seems that the player movement was patterned from an overweight NBA player, who hasn’t been playing ball for quite some time and is coming from fot surgery…”

I think you need more outside shooting on the young guy scrimmage team. Sadly, I’m drawing a blank on who could fill that role.

I think Martell Webster, J.R. Smith, or Salim Stoudamire could fill the shooters role on that young team. Is Kevin Martin considered to be young? If so, I’d start him on that squad.

martel webster is too streaky to be considered a gunner. Salim maybe.Bump JJ reddick down to the JV team and let him play. Even throw adam morrison on there for a second till he gets killed on defense.
YEa…the review was a joke about how chris pauls motion capture would effect the game…NOT SERIOUS. and even if it did, it would still be better than NBA live lol

I was just thinking that Bron. JJ won’t make Team USA (yet, if ever.) Same w/ Morrison. What about Steve Novak too? He’s young and an amazing shooter.

does the JV team have to be young guys? Anthony Parker (not to be confused with Tony Parker) of the Raps would be ideal. He played the international game, and can shoot, he would give them a good idea of some of the competetion team USA would face. This makes perfect sense to me at least …

The “JV” team doesn’t feature anyone who graduated before ‘08, not sure how many NBA Players who skipped years actually fit in there though.
