Being born and bred in Beantown, I couldn’t be happier with yesterday’s events. Today though, my excitement has already turned into anticipation of our next move. I’ve been preaching that Brevin Knight would be the perfect piece to just about anyone who will listen to me since the Celtics acquired Ray Allen. I still think if Brevin is completely healthy that he is far and away the guy who makes the most sense for the Celtics. But let’s face it, the C’s need more than that. As of right now their bench consists of a guy who is coming off serious knee surgery (and my not even be ready for the start of the season), a guy nicknamed “Veal,” and FOUR undrafted or second-round draft picks.
Personally, I’d like to see them go out and sign a starting point guard (Brevin) and some intangibles guys. Here are the remaining free agents, both restricted and unrestricted that the C’s have to be considering…
Guards
Brevin Knight - Go get him, Danny.
Troy Hudson - T-Hud was in our office having a beer at 10 am a few months ago. I like him.
Earl Boykins - One of my favorite players in the L, but probably not the right fit for Boston.
Gary Payton - Could a return trip to Beantown be in GP’s future? It’s slim pickings out there.
Jannero Pargo - Considering my blog is called “TheJed” and I saw Pargo called “The Pargo” last week, I kind of like him.
Devin Brown - He played very well last year. Could be a good bench player for the C’s.
Charlie Bell - He’s a restricted free agent and might be too expensive, but he’d be a great fit off the bench.
Eddie Jones - I wouldn’t hate on this. Let’s get Eddie a ring.
Keith McLeod - Definitely not the name you want to see as the C’s starting point guard.
Andre Barrett - He’s a restricted free agent but he’s probably obtainable if the Celtics want him.
Jeff McInnis - He’s not a Celtics player.
Mickael Pietrus - Restricted free agent. Too expensive. Not going anywhere.
Intangibles Guys
P.J. Brown - I have to think he’s a top priority for Danny Ainge.
Matt Barnes - He’ll definitely be too expensive. I’ve always liked him though.
Ime Udoka - He’d come cheap, plays solid defense, and is someone the Celtics have to be considering.
Jarvis Hayes - Unrestricted free agent and I’d assume the Celtics would be interested.
Ruben Patterson - I can’t imagine the Celtics would consider doing this.
Dahntay Jones - Basically a poor man’s Tony Allen without the bad wheel.
Jalen Rose - More likely to be their color commentator than wearing a jersey.
James Posey - Good defender and a great fit for the C’s bench.
Corliss “Big Nasty” Williamson - Big Nasty had his moments last season, but on a team flush with undersized bigs, do we need him?
Chuck Hayes - Restricted free agent and the Rockets are not going to let him leave.
Sasha Pavlovic - Restricted free agent and probably not going anywhere, especially after he emerged as one of LeBron’s only other weapons.
DerMarr Johnson - They need bench players and DerMarr qualifies.
James Singleton - Another good 8th or 9th man. We need those right now.
Big Men
C-Webb - No chance. Right? … Right? I don’t want him. Right?
Anderson Varejo - He’s a restricted free agent and I don’t see the Cavs letting him walk. Still, the C’s should at least put the feeler out there.
Dikembe Mutombo - Seriously, it isn’t a bad move. Mutombo looked decent last year and he’d look a lot better in the East. We’re talking 15 minutes a game.
Melvin Ely - He’s always had talent. I have no idea why he hasn’t done anything in the NBA.
Scot Pollard - He couldn’t get any run on the Cavs last year. That’s probably a bad sign.
Mike Sweetney - Weight check anyone?
Marc Jackson - I think I like Leon Powe better but Jackson has more size.
Calvin Booth - Ugh.
Brian Skinner - Ugh Part II.

Skinner isn’t terrible. I can see him on your team. Sounds like Ainge already has his eye on Mutombo. You can never go wrong by adding Hoyas.

I really think Andre Miller would be the ideal fit at PG fot this team. It’s unfortunate that the Celts dont have anything to offer the Sixers for him.
At least Billy King is sticking to the rebuilding plan, not getting enticed to make a typical BK move.

I like the idea of Melvin Ely. I think they need 3 guys out of that group. Some vets and some younger bench players to change the pace. Too many old guys and we’d have a long injury list all year.

Posey would be a great fit off the bench. They need to bring in someone who can START if Ray gets hurt.

I agree that the Celtics have to make sure that they pick up a big man that can play 20-25 minutes per, a starting point guard, and a wing player who can play both the 2 and 3. Posey would be a great fit.

In a perfect world, we’d add:
Eddie Jones (we NEED a bench scorer worse than anything)
James Posey (if no Eddie Jones)
Brevin Knight (as a backup, let Rondo develop, because he is the long term solution and is good enough that he deserves a chance…)
Dikembe (we need another legit center)

I’d obviously take a shot on Ely too, but Dikembe’s more proven and you gotta love the finger wag!!!

Nice Job JED!!!
As we have agreed on Brev Knight would be the best answer at the point for the upcoming season to team with Rondo. After that I do like Charlie Bell and James Posey as reserve options. I have always made fun of Deke and could never see him in Green but 15 minutes a night could work just fine if he still has the fumes he has been running on the last 5 years. I think old man Eddie might be showing his age but he is still better then most reserves on that list.
I would definitely take a shot at Melvin Ely on the cheap, I think he is quite talented and has yet to find a home, he could contribute at both ends and learn a lot from KG. If not Ely then PJ Brown is a crafty vet that would be a no brainer. No thanks on Webber…I think…yeah no thanks on Webber.
Let the bidding begin…

The Jed says:
Don’t think for a minute i don’t know who “Tron” is. For those of you who are wondering, one my boys who evidently calls himself “Tron” and I made a bet a few years back. I said, Taliek Brown would never be on an NBA roster for one second. He of course disagreed. Taliek, if they have internet in whatever country you’re playing ball in now, let us know what you think of the bet.

I am not sure if you are familiar with the salary cap, but signing people from that trash head will be a challenge with the limited dollars the Cs have left to squander.

We have some money with the exceptions and i don’t think the C’s are caring too much about the luxary taxes at the minute.

If we could somehow grab all 3 of Brevin, Eddie Jones (or Posey), and Dikembe, you might as well start sizing rings now!
