Fake Contenders

We’ve mentioned it before (Dime #34, “Players 2 Watch”), but after seeing how good Kobe and LeBron have been this summer, it warrants another mention: How have the Lakers and Cavs done nothing to improve their rosters when they’ve got the two best players in the League in their primes? You’ve got teams like Boston and New York making major strides to get better, and teams like Houston and Orlando — even if you don’t agree with some their moves — are at least trying to do something significant. But all L.A. has done is make one useful draft pick out of three, re-sign Chris Mihm and Luke Walton, and bring in Derek Fisher, while Cleveland is going into ’07-08 without changing a clearly flawed roster at all. It’s crazy that the Mitch Kupchaks and Danny Ferrys of the world are seemingly content to let Hall of Fame talents waste their prime on fake contenders. Yesterday there was some sign of front-office life in Cleveland, though, as it’s being reported that the Cavs are looking at Dikembe Mutombo and Allan Houston. That’s a start, even though you are talking about a couple of NBA relics. Obviously Deke would bolster Mike Brown‘s D, but it’s still not addressing the “LeBron right, LeBron left, LeBron up the middle” offense. H20 could step in and take Damon Jones‘ spot as the designated bench shooter, you know, since Allan can actually shoot … ‘Melo (who actually has a solid team around him) to the Denver Post: “My record speaks for itself. When the ball’s in my hands and the game’s on the line, I feel like there’s a 99 percent chance the shot’s going in.” … After Jamaal Magloire blew off Canadian national team coach Leo Rautins once already this summer and then said he’d only play if Canada made the Olympics, Rautins told the Toronto Sun, “The line that just killed everyone here was the one where [Magloire] said if they get there (to Beijing) he would show up. Man for man, everyone said at that time, ‘We don’t want you.’” The coach later added, “I haven’t talked to Jamaal, but I’m tired of chasing him. Would I like to have a guy of his size on the roster? Sure. But these guys worked their butts off to get there and if they don’t want him, he’s not playing. I don’t care if he begs to play.” Yeah, but if Steve Nash waits until the Olympics, shows up on gameday and says he’ll play 5 minutes per half, how much you wanna bet everyone in that locker room says “Yes” in a heartbeat? … Speaking of Nash, Jed was on the way home yesterday when he e-mailed to say he saw Nash on the bottle of Clearly Canadian … Dajuan Wagner‘s road back to the NBA is gonna have to go through Poland, where he signed with a pro team this week … By now you’ve probably heard that Francisco Elson broke his eye socket while playing for the Holland national team in a game against Belarus and will be out for about six weeks. What we wanna know is, Elson has to be dominating in a Holland/Belarus game, right? Then again, Sam Dalembert hasn’t exactly been tearing up the FIBA Americas tourney against some subpar comp … If you missed it, Twins pitcher Scott Baker had a perfect game going into the 9th last night. Then he walked the first batter of the inning. After getting the next guy out, KC’s Mike Sweeney came up with Baker still going for a no-hitter. Right when Sweeney smacked a single to left, the Twins color guy deadpanned, “I never liked him anyway.” … We’re out like Magloire …

Nash was wearing number 13 for the clearly canadian team on the bottle.

Twins color guy was a pitcher of considerable acclaim. Bert, like everyone else, knows what a great guy Sweeney is.

As for Lakers and Cavs, Kobe and LeBron (like KG was with the T-wolves) eats up much of the salary cap. That’s why Boston had to give up 5 players to match KG’s pay. I don’t think the entire Lakers team (sans Kobe) could offset a star sidekick for Kobe.

I know this may sound crazy, but I think this Lakers team can compete. With D-Fish coming back and Jordan Farmar getting some experience in the playoffs last year, I think their PG situation is vastly improved. Chris Mihm, when healthy, is a decent back-up center and will be a plus for the team. Also, if Bynum has any heart at all, he should come into the season with a vengeance to prove Kobe wrong and be more consistent. Considering all of these factors, along with the fact that the Lakers were already a 7-seed last year, I think that this version of Lakers could potentially win 50+ games. If Kobe comes back that is..

mike you’ve been drinking too much of the LA kool aid.

  5. Mike says:

Yes I admit that I’m a Laker fan but this team really isn’t as flawed as many claim it to be. Bynum/Mihm is a decent center combo in the present NBA. Odom and Walton are one of the better small forward rotations in the league and Fisher/Farmar is an improvement over anything involving Smush. And yes, Kwame and Cook still stink but with Kobe being in the best physical condition he’s ever been in, this is a significantly better team than last year. Just remember my words when the Lakers get off to a fast start and compete for the Pacific division title when Nash finally breaks down during the middle of the season.

I’m a big laker fan… and I do admit LA is much better this year than last… But not just enough… Lot’s of potential transactions, and nothing comes up…

KB24 and the King eat up a lot of Cap space? Kwame makes 9M Lamar makes 12M… These two are the reasons why LA can’t get a star sidekick… How about Larry Hughes and bi Z’s salaries… Hughes and James Salary are has less than a Million in difference…

It’s the management’s fault… KG, Ray allen, P-double had bloated (max) salaries, It’s impossible to get them together… But Ainge was able to something…

Oh, how about Players who kill in international play and burn in the NBA… Like Carlos Arroyo…
