The champ is here…If you played high school sports at all, you know what it means when your squad is scheduled to be someone else’s homecoming opponent. That was the Blazers last night. The Spurs were in victory-lap mode, picking up their championship rings in front of the home crowd, unveiling the banner and rocking jerseys with the Larry O’Brien trophy stitched on. Are they gonna wear those all year? That’s just evil to make everyone look at the trophy all the time, especially when they play the Suns … It was light work early on for Tony Parker (19 pts) and Tim Duncan (24 pts, 13 rebs) and crew, to the point where Francisco Elson was looking like Amare Stoudemire dunking on Portland’s collective head. You could tell Nate McMillan chewed his team out at halftime, though, because the Blazers came out in the second half pumped up and playing well. Portland cut the lead to four by the end of the third, and got within three with two minutes left, but San Antonio hit the shots they needed and pulled it out … Of course, the Spurs own the top spot in the season’s first NBA Hit List, which we dropped before yesterday’s action tipped off … And you can add San Antonio to the list of NBA teams/players getting into the boxing craze. Ex-featherweight champ Jesse James Leija ran the Spurs through boxing classes over the summer, and apparently Manu (16 pts, 8 asts, 5 stls) can throw blows with the best of ‘em. Consider that the next time you wanna say he’s soft. Guess Kobe was lucky he didn’t catch a Chris Childs flashback after karate-chopping Manu last year … Did you hear where Darius Miles called Cheryl Miller to tell her that he’s a month away from being able to play? Why does D-Miles even have Cheryl’s number? … Thanks to the production team for the stuff about TP and Eva’s wedding. And extra-thanks for “You Are So Beautiful” playing in the background. We really needed that … Speaking of the NBA’s most famous husband, is Tony Parker a future Hall of Famer? The feedback was split when we posed the question yesterday … Why do people keep falling for Manu’s pump fake when it doesn’t even look like his real shot? … Brandon Roy made some nice passes (6 asts), but Bruce Bowen pretty much had him on smash all night (7 pts, 2-for-10 FGs). McMillan’s “Pass the ball to LaMarcus and let him shoot it” style of offense did produce 27 points for the big man, though … Our man Victor over at China Dime e-mailed right before the Rockets/Lakers game — airing at 10:30 a.m. Chinese time, if we’re not mistaken — and said the TV audience there was expected to be over 1 billion. Crazy. And how much bigger would that number be if Yi Jianlian or Sun Yue had also been involved? Whenever Houston and Milwaukee play, that’s gonna be the date to circle … Even with all the off-court Kobe drama, once the game got going, you almost forgot about all the trade rumors and just watched Kobe playing ball with his team. If you watched the game on mute, you would have had no idea there were any problems … In the first half Kobe dropped 19 points and was pretty efficient by his standards. In the second, kid brought out the heater. 32 shots from the field? 27 from the line? Damn, homie. He ended up with 45 points … Crazy finish to this one. Doug Collins had declared the game over with Houston up double-digits with about a minute and a half left, but next thing you know, Luke Walton turns into Larry Bird, Kobe hit a few more shots, Derek Fisher knocked one down, and we’re tied with under 15 ticks. Then Shane Battier comes down and sticks a three with a hand in his face with 2.5 seconds left. Laker ball, and Battier makes the smart play by fouling Kobe before he could get off a triple. Kobe made the first, missed the second on purpose, and had a decent look at a game-tying shot, but got it knocked out of his hand. Of course Kobe thought it was a foul, but we didn’t see it … We’re pulling for Kwame Brown. Really, we are. On L.A.’s first possession, Kwame soared into the lane and got a man’s offensive rebound, then with a clear path in front of him, didn’t even think of going back up for the shot. He’s just never gonna learn how to play basketball, is he? On one play in the second half, Kwame fumbled a rebound on the defensive end that somehow ended up bouncing high enough off the floor to go through the hoop for a Rockets bucket. T-Mac (30 pts) went down the floor laughing ’cause he got credit for the score … Before Warriors/Jazz, the GS roster was introduced one-by-one as they came down the steps through the crowd. Pat O’Bryant almost fell a few times. The starters were raised up on a platform. And somewhere, Rick Barry was grumbling about how he won a championship in the Bay and never got that kind of reception … Wasn’t it supposed to be the measured pick-and-roll Jazz against the crazy up-and-down Warriors? Utah was the group flying all over the court — AK-47 was especially possessed (9 pts, 9 rebs, 8 asts, 5 blks) — and turned it into a piecing … Carlos Boozer was a beastmaster with 32 and 15, but have you ever noticed that Booz pushes off a lot? He’s slick about it, though, and it was part of the reason Utah killed GS on the glass … You saw the commercials last night: Here’s your chance to win your high school squad a locker room makeover via the adidas Brotherhood campaign. We can’t promise KG, Duncan, T-Mac, Chauncey, Dwight and Gil will come to your school for a pickup run like in the ad, but it’s a cool prize nonetheless … If you missed it, Juwan Howard is reportedly signing with the Mavs. We knew they wouldn’t be rolling with Brandon Bass for too long; Juwan or C-Webb was destined to be in Dallas sooner or later … We’re out like Kwame’s progress …

The refs should of called Shane Battier for an intentional foul. He made no effort to even mask a try on the ball, grabbing Kobe’s left arm, not allowing him to shoot or maneuver to get a shot off at all. This caused a large disadvantage, similar to if he was going up for a dunk and someone pushed him from behind, sending him sprawling–except that it’s not flagrant. Seriously, refs make this call everyday at every level because intentional fouls are unsporting and a really cheap move.
The refs should have gave the Lakers the two free throws and the ball back because that was a bunch of bullshit.

i was impressed with the blaze.. they looked like they belonged on the court with the spurs and I wasn’t expecting that. dont know why, just didn’t. now i know. they can run, the really miss oden’s defensive presence in the lane, but otherwise play decent D. they hit some pretty important shots at key points in the game. good future on that team. Spurs, even though you can tell they were not clicking all the time, are still so on the same page. darius washington and matt bonner even came in and did their thing.
I was not impressed by the rockets. early on it just seemed like they didn’t have an identity. like they were still figuring out whether they’re TMac’s team or not. They just don’t use Yao enough early in games for some reason. I just don’t get that. Sure they won, but they need an identity.
Didn’t see the Jazz, I guess they were able to replace Derek Fisher allright. big win for ‘em.

Speaking of Franchise, did anyone notice how many minutes he got? Zero. My guess is that he is going to start causing trouble if that keeps up.
Have to admit I am surprised that Rafer was still starting after all the PG’s Houston added this summer.
Also, LA was without Odom…the fact that LA lost by 1 on a questionable call without Odom is a good sign. LA is much better offensively with Odom in the starting lineup.

A questionable call? Wowsers. Laker/Kobe fans are hilarious/delirious.
I agree with dude who said the rockets need/don’t have an identity. They have a stacked roster but they’re gonna have to figure some things out over the course of the year. I would think they’d want something similar to what LA used to have with riding Yao the first 3 quarters and then ask T-Mac to close it out in the fourth. He’s gotta step up and fill that roll though.

If anything they should be proud that Kobe is still coming to play despite all the stuff going on. As far as the calls, well let us just say the refs made horrible calls that involved both teams all night. Anyway Rockets won!
Did anyone see that they hadn’t won their first game of the season since 85! Woooo that is crazy.
LOL it was funny watching T-Mac smirk and laugh at Kobe pitching a fit at the end of the game.
Again Rockets win anyway so deal with it haters. If the Lakers don’t go and score for the Rockets….who knows (I am smirking and laughing like T-Mac right now).
Oh yea and umm of course the Rockets don’t have an identity right now. THE SEASON JUST STARTED. They have a new coach and new players, so it will be a minute before they get that. Shiiiii a lot of teams don’t have one right now. Anyway I thought it was a great first night, can’t wait for the rest of the 81 games for each team.

That’s okay, there were so many games on last night, I can imagine that you couldn’t possible get to all of them. Btw, when will be the next full article on the knicks coming out? Kudabeen says:
As much as Kobe is taking on the mantle that his team isn’t built to win last night he showed how much he isn’t built to lead…
What i saw last night was a bunch of “younger” players giving effort. I saw Kwame continuing to be tough on D and stronger with the ball. I saw Bynum showing on D, but not getting the ball on O to keep his motivation. I saw D-Fish being D-Fish…I saw Farmar attacking and full of confidence. I saw Walton playing D!! and hustling…Turiaf being Ronny and bringing energy…This was a young squad competing and looking good overall without their second best player…
I also saw Kobe start the game off perfect. He was taking good Kobe shots He had some very nice dimes, but then…He got lost in himself out there…He wasn’t focused…I don’t know if it’s the wrist or just his internal ambivalence toward the organization, but for a large stretch it didn’t look like he was playing for the Lakers or for a W. It looked like he was playing for what was on the back of his jersey rather than the front! Bad shots, not allowing others to get involved, which is different then the past where guys would be gun shy. The other player looked confident…hell even Kwame was attacking. Kobe just was forcing the issue. What was the deal with his Freethrows? in a game that tight that’s crucial. Yes they made the late surge and yes the Rockets are supposed to be better, but like I said in an earlier post. I think the lakers are way better than Kobe and other’s realize. I think Phil Jackson put it best. Kobe has to be committed to his team to get the most out of it. I know I’m in the Minority, but the lakers can be a 50+ win team. The other guys weren’t the problem last night. Kobe hijacked many possessions and in the end they allowed the Rockets to casually put them away.
That last play by Rafer wasn’t questionable. I think Kobe’s reaction time wasn’t their once he touched the ball. He tried to gather for a shot and/or get contact, rather than go straight up. He goes straight up, then Rafer fouls him on the head or arm.
Having said that. I was jumping around and my heart was racing in the end of that game. It was an excellent start to the season. I got to Kobe challenge Tracy.
Big thing I did notice. Tracy was clearly more relaxed and confident in his team than Kobe was in his, but then again Tracy doesn’t emit that vicious energy to win too often anyway. Houston and the Lakers are playoff teams right now, but I think the Lakers have a much greater upside. All they need is their best player to be their best leader …

The other one came down to the final play. One of them featured Boozer, Deron and Baron. The other featured Kobe, T-Mac and Yao. Come on. There was a reason TNT chose LA/Houston for national TV. And what do you expect people to watch the game with a score sheet? The box score says 9 boards and 5 blocks. So STFU.

T.M.P.B.W.O.T.P. — last night the box score said andrei had 10, early reports after the game confirmed that. this morning i wake up and he has 9, whatever, jazz still got the W. I was surprised by the lakers/hou game, a lot closer than I thought it would be, either I grossly under-estimated the lakers this season, or more precisely, grossly over-estimated the ability of the rockettes. I just thought that a game between two 2nd round teams would have been more exciting than a game between two teams that yearly bounce out of the playoffs in the first round.
bliz289 — No way Deron makes the all-star game this season. It’s IN New Orleans this year.
Austin Burton — fan, singular. it’s not a claim of no respect, your actions themselves display a lack of respect (half the write up is about the dubs pregame pagentry) … you looked at the box score long enough to mention Andrei, but not long enough to notice that Millsap got a double double, or that Deron was killing them. Brewer and Millsap had about jams each, but you wouldn’t have known that because you decided to watch the lakers/houston game. Martell did look confident. He had one play where it showed most to me, where he caught the ball on the side around 3-land and took this huge in-step off the dribble, went straight up and drained it, turned his back and got right back on D looking for his man. There was no silly celebration. He knew that was supposed to go in…He and Lamarcus looked great. Roy was the only one that didn’t show up. I can’t even blame it all on Bowen, because he was dancing around bowen off the dribble to start, but then sort of faded. Even when parker was guarding him and Barry he didn’t attack. 2-10 for their franchise player is weak. He should be 2-15 or have a gang of freethrows, but maybe I’m just undervaluing the Spurs team D.
Aldridge not only looked go going at Duncan on O, but actually didn’t look too bad on D. The Blazers team all together was erratic on D at times. Too many times Aldridge and Joel was one perimeter while duncan and olsen of all people were getting favorable match ups or no one was rotating. But like Barkley said, they are no easy games guaranteed outside of the wolves and sonics maybe…
I am looking hard at Deron Williams. The durability on top of the killer instinct is very Impressive. Paul Has the instinct, but he hasn’t proved to have the durability to be on the floor to help his team. Deron for me edging out CP3 for the best young PG in the league. I think Deron will be an All-star, because it’s in New Orleans. You don’t think he knows it’s there and he’s competing against CP3 as that third PG along with Tony parker and Baron with Nash being the shoe-in for the starting PG. We’ll see how CP3 comes out firing…

Tim Duncan signed an extension and took $10+mil less than market for the GOOD OF THE TEAM…
I’m not saying this to point fingers at guys who get all they are worth, because those guys aren’t in the position Duncan is.
I say this to commend and praise the San Antonio franchise on how well it’s built and ran. Kobe has already spoke on how he felt about the laker’s management, why would he take less money. KG witnessed the wolves lack of commitment to winning, why would he take less dollars. Even though he did say that he’d restructure (if the players union would let him) if he thought the decisions were going to help…
Are we going to use the same weak arguments about Franchise players signing contracts for too much money if LeBron’s Cavs can’t afford a free agent in the future or with Dwight if Orlando needs another piece?
It’s about the franchise building the kind of solidarity and understanding with their Franchise player to allow him to put his ego aside and be willing to sacrafice a little to improve his team and benefit the guys around him that he needs to battle for him and with him.
I respect the hell out of that man…

The Spurs are money, but don’t be surprised if the Blazers play a lot better than everyone thinks they will. They have a pretty talented young team, even without Russell’s doppleganger.

Kudabeen — CP3 is a great point guard, and I’m happy to see that he’s still off the ‘hizzy’ with his production. People call him the next Isiah, but I think that he’s closer to the next Oscar. (on the stat sheet) I think that if you switched Deron and CP3 on their teams, they wouldn’t be in the optimum situations for their talents. It’s hard for Deron to display his rebounding ability, look at his roster . . . CJ Miles had 7 boards for the jazz in their first game. Steals is another thing that CP3 gets a lot of, he’s really quick, and with Tyson on board, has all the free reign in the world to play passing lanes because if he gets beat then he knows there’s a 7 foot shotblocker who has his back. Deron doesn’t have that going for him. I think that if both teams are healthy, they can both win at least 5-6 playoff games this season.
B - A lot of utah fans I know are pissed off enough with the years of being passed over that they’ve become too defensive. I probably fit that bill, I’ve been a jazz fan since ‘87.
jbass - he really looked like he was coasting out there, if he can do it, why not dime? : )
Gee - I just thought the Rox would take care of buisness, and not rely on Kwame and Walton scoring for you guys to secure your margin of victory. It’s going to be a long season, you guys will probably be more playoff ready after the all-star break.
Celts Fan - I hope that Ak doesn’t think that he has the green light to shoot jumpers with no one in rebounding position with 15 on the shot clock . . . he did that 3 or 4 times vs. G’State. If a jazz homer like me doesn’t like it, I’m pretty sure that Sloan isn’t going to be a fan either.
SWAT - In the 4th quarter in Staples the refs will always let the lakers foul you on defense to get steals. Rememeber that playoff game vs. phoenix when smush stole the ball from nash? yeah, there was more contact there than on tony parker’s wedding night. Crappy deal, but glad the lakes still lost.\
Duke - I think that sox fans have shut up a bit, you know, after the rioting of course.
Austin Burton - What, your HD-TV doesn’t have picture in picture? Ha, sorry for being so hard on y’all. I’ll have plenty of time to hear you guys write about them after the rox and lakers are out of the playoffs, but the jazz are still in them. So, again, I’m saying sorry.
