Fantasy Cheat Sheet - Top 40 Point Guards

Cheat sheets anyone? Here is the Fantasy Doctor’s top 40 point guard rankings.

1. Steve Nash – For my money, he’s still the safest fantasy bet out there. At some point the age is going to catch up with him, but he keeps himself in tremendous shape and will guarantee you do well in assists, free throw percentage, and field goal percentage. Add solid numbers in points and steals and he’s guaranteed to help you win each week in fantasy and will have nice end of year numbers in rotisserie.

2. Gilbert Arenas – Gil has the potential to put up 30 points, 7 assists, 5 boards, 2 steals a game and hit 200 threes this year. Really, he does.

3. Jason Kidd – Kidd is in better shape than he has ever been. He is a triple-double threat every single night which makes up for his mediocre field goal percentage and three-point numbers.

4. Deron Williams – In terms of fantasy, I’m a Deron Williams fan before Chris Paul. I just think Williams has the ability to give you more assists, threes and field goal percentage, which are qualities I want out of my point guard. CP will probably give you more boards and points. It’s close though. Very close.

5. Chris Paul – A few more pieces around him, a few more threes, and CP moves into the top 3 next year.

6. Chauncey Billups – He definitely looked a little bit slower last year and the Pistons might not be quite as good this season. That being said, Chauncey is going to give you nice points, assists, and threes consistently throughout the season. A fringe keeper and a great draft pick.

7. Baron Davis – Healthy Baron is an incredible fantasy asset. He does it all. Here’s the thing – Baron is never healthy for an entire season and can drive you insane. If this is the year though…

8. Kirk Hinrich – Kirk plays as much off guard as the point these days but his assist numbers qualify him for our point guard list. Points, threes, and assists. His downfall has always been consistency and field goal percentage. Both are getting better.

9. Tony Parker – TP still doesn’t hit threes, though they’re coming a little more often, but he’s a field goal percentage monster and gives you nice points, and decent assists. If you get him, find threes and a little more assists elsewhere.

10. Raymond Felton – I was sure last year was the year that Felton would be a top 10 performer. It wasn’t. I still believe it’s coming (thus the #10 ranking).

11. Leandro Barbosa – Barbosa was one of the steals of the draft last year. That won’t happen this season. He won’t give you a ton of assists, but Barbosa will give you close to 200 threes, points, and very nice percentages.

12. Mike Bibby – Don’t forget about Bibby. Yes he had an off year last season, but Bibby is still good for 18 points, 150+ threes, and 6 dimes a game.

13. Andre Miller - Andre Miller is a great fantasy asset, if you draft him for the right reasons. Dre’ is not going to hit threes. He is going to give you maybe 15 points a game. What he is going to do is give you a guaranteed 6.5+ plus assists, some decent steals numbers and a great field goal percentage.

14. Mo Williams - Straight up, Mo is underrated. He scores, he gets decent assist numbers, he rebounds, his percentages are strong, and will probably hit close to 100 threes this season. He is one of those guys that helps you a little bit everywhere and doesn’t hurt you anywhere.

15. Stephon Marbury – Steph had an awful start last year, but hit a stretch where he was once again a very good fantasy point guard. Considering that Eddy Curry and Zach Randolph are both weak passing from the post, you’re looking at a nice increase in assists for Steph.

16. T.J. Ford – Toronto is going to be a solid team this season and T.J. Ford is going to lead them. Look for very strong assist numbers from Ford this season. He’s an above average rebounder for a small guard. Two problems though: he doesn’t hit threes and Toronto is also very high on Jose Calderon.

17. Jameer Nelson – It is somewhat humorous that Orlando is saying that Jameer has to earn the starting job this preseason. Evidently, someone thinks Nelson needs to be motivated. That’s a good thing for fantasy owners. With Rashard and Dwight, Nelson has two solid places to turn to for assists. I see no reason this shouldn’t be Jameer’s fantasy breakout season in points, assists, and threes.

18. Jamaal Tinsley – The Pacers have said that Jamaal will once again have the keys to the team. Always a threat to pile up assists, Jamal hasn’t lived up to potential in fantasy and hasn’t been able to stay healthy either.

19. Rajon Rondo - High risk and high reward. If Rondo plays 30 minutes per game, he has a legit shot to average very nice numbers across the board. Don’t look here for threes, but 10 points, 7 assists, and 5 or 6 boards (Rondo has always been a good rebounder) is a real possibility.

20. Brevin Knight – If you have read the Fantasy Doctor before, you know Brevin is one of my favorite fantasy point guards. He just was never healthy last season. We’ll see what happens on the Clips. We’d draft him.

21. Steve Francis – Who really knows what the Rockets are going to get out of Francis? There will be a lot of competition in H-Town. Is a Franchise flashback possible? Yes. But we don’t see it being a consistent thing.

22. Chucky Atkins – There were a couple months last year towards the beginning of the season where Atkins was playing a great role for your fantasy team. He was hitting threes and getting some nice points numbers. In Denver, they’ll look for him to distribute rather than gun, something we haven’t really seen from Chucky before.

23. Larry Hughes – The Hughes of three years ago feels like it is much longer than three years gone. That being said, if healthy Hughes can still give you steals, points, assists, and some threes. Just not as many as you’d like. And the chances of him being consistently healthy aren’t good.

24. Randy Foye – His potential is legit. His team? Not so much. He’s going to give you more shooting guard numbers than point guard numbers. If the Wolves are going to be competitive though, they need the ball in Foye’s hands and need numbers from him.

25. Luke Ridnour – Huge disappointment last year and he has less talent on his team this season. He gives you decent assists over the course of the season, but is not a strong head-to-head option because of his inconsistency and the presence of Earl Watson. A 4th fantasy guard at best.

26. Sam Cassell – I don’t care how old Sam is, when he is on the court, he contributes to the team and to your fantasy team. The Clippers added the fragile Brevin Knight so expect Cassell’s minutes to be limited, but if gets 30+ a night, Sam can still help a fantasy squad.

27. Rafer Alston - Skip can still shoot the three ball and get you assists. If he remains in Houston, his value probably slides a bit. If he gets dealt, his value takes a nice jump.

28. Jarrett Jack – Jack looked great at times last year and very bad at others.

29. Devin Harris - Devin got a nice contract and will occasionally show nice flashes of fantasy potential, but he just doesn’t do enough in any one category to really be a good option as a starter. Much better basketball player than a fantasy basketball player.

30. Steve Blake – There were a few minutes last season where Blake really helped fantasy teams. Watch the Portland situation carefully. Blake could have a few of those moments again.

31. Jason Williams – If Williams is healthy and focused (both of which are always questionable), he can help in threes and assists. One of those guys who could help you one-week win a head to head match up. Getting that week right might be tricky.

32. Jose Calderon – The Toronto situation is definitely worth watching. When TJ Ford was out last year, Calderon stepped right in and played terrific basketball. When both were healthy, they still found Calderon minutes. He needs 25+ consistently to be worthy of a roster spot. At some point this season, he’ll have real value.

33. Mike Conley - The Grizzlies would love to have Mike Conley running this team by midseason. I just don’t see him being ready to contribute to a fantasy team this season and would probably pass on him. If it’s a deep keeper league though, you have to keep your eyes open for him because Conley has Chris Paul-like potential.

34. Derek Fisher - The Lakers have so few offensive weapons that Derek Fisher is going to have to put up numbers. Still, unless you desperately need threes, we recommend looking elsewhere.

35. Smush Parker – Two years ago, Smush seemed to get over the hump in his NBA career and have a chance at real fantasy value. Smush shot at a high percentage, hit some threes, got some assists, and was one of the NBA leaders in steals. Then last year, it completely disappeared. We’ll see how Smush reacts to the move to Miami. If Wade misses significant time, Smush could have nice early season stats.

36. Earl Watson - The Luke Ridnour/Earl Watson two-headed monster is back. Unless one of them is hurt, neither will have consistent value.

37. Acie Law – The Hawks need Acie Law to step in and play. Atlanta has weapons and if Law can solidify their point guard position, it’s possible he’ll find his way into some value. Still, we’d take a wait and see approach.

38. Mike James – I mean, he was great for Houston a couple years ago. Only problem is that this isn’t two years ago, and the Rockets suddenly have 15 point guards on their roster.

39. Kyle Lowry – Kyle Lowry is someone to watch in the preseason. If he wins the point guard job, he may have some value. He’s fast as anything and showed promise before he got hurt.

40. Tyrone Lue – If Acie Law isn’t ready, which is definitely possible, Tyrone Lue is the most likely guy to get those minutes. Lue has gotten better and better and showed some promise of some decent fantasy numbers last week. More of a guy to watch for on waivers than draft.

Others to keep an eye on –Chris Duhon, Sebastian Telfair, Damon Stoudamire, Bobby Jackson, Tyrone Lue, Travis Diener, Speedy Claxton, Earl Boykins.

I think this is the first fantasy list (although this isn’t a real fantasy list) where Williams is ranked ahead of Paul. And you forgot to mention that Deron Williams will give you more turnovers than Paul as well. And with Mo Pete, Peja and David West, expect Paul’s assists to increase from last season.

  2. dank says:

Steve Nash does not deserve to be in the top 15. and he doesnt NOT have solid numbers in steals. the last time Steve Nash stole anything in basketball, was the 2005 and 2006 MVP trophies. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE stop sucking him off PLEASE

  3. flyp says:

    Hey dank.
Granted, less than a steal per game isn’t spectacular - but he can single-handedly win you assists in a head-to-head league without hurting you anywhere else (because in fantasy sports, unlike real life, how many points you give up to your opponent doesn’t count).

This is where you need to stick personal preference aside. You may hate Steve Nash the real-life player because he’s about as solid defensively as Jell-O in an earthquake, but Fantasy-Steve-Nash is dynamite.

I HATE Vince Carter, but I’d still draft him because he puts up good stats. Gotta be objective, dank.

  4. Mo says:

    ROFLMAO dank!

  5. dank says:

oh my bad i just realized this was fantasy preview not an actual list of whos top 40 PG in the NBA. i apologize for going off on steve nash, sorry guys. i know that if we were doing another ranking of top 10 PG’s, steve nash would be # 26, or 27 maybe. proceed with your fantasizing

  6. bron2424 says:

lolz dank u r so rite nas is teh wurst “1″ in nba histry!!1!

  7. The Fantasy Doctor says:

The Nash thing isn’t even worth commenting on. The CP vs. Williams is though. It’s really 1a vs. 1b and you can’t go wrong either way. Right now though, I’d go with Wiliiams.

  8. Lucky Lester says:

    Nash is a great player.

  9. illfil27 says:

I have high hopes in Bassy Telfair. Why don’t you rank him higher in that list or rank him at all for that matter? The T’Wolves don’t have a legitimate PG besides Randy Foye and maybe Rashad McCants. However, I don’t think McCants will produce big numbers and he won’t even get many minutes. That would mean that Bassy would be the first Guard off the bench. He could even start some games. Getting more minutes he could find his shot, score and create opportunities for his teammates like Jefferson and Davis. His FT% is solid. I belive Telfair could be a steal this season.

  10. marcus says:

no mention of daniel gibson, yet guys like travis diener and ty lue pops up?

    what’s up with that?

  11. Austin Burton says:

Ty Lue might be the 3rd stringer in Atlanta. Speedy Claxton is supposedly looking great in camp and Acie Law’s gonna get his burn.

  12. Lucky Lester says:

I’m waiting for Speedy to “look great” in the game, with a Hawks jersey…

Also, ditto on Daniel Gibson… Especially with Eric Snow having all that sand in his too-too.

But more importantly, Ill Fill 27, neither Foye nor McCants (especially not McCants) are true point guards, don’t be confused - but that doesn’t mean that shotless Bassy is going to get minutes. I guarantee that Rashad McCants gets minutes for that team of young bucks. However, he’s either a very undersized 3 or a 2 guard with little handle, he is by no means a point guard. Foye is a shorter younger (maybe less talented?) version of D-Wade - and while he may start at the point, he’s not a true point. I’d say Bassy is, but I also might argue that his 3 point shot is a little better than Ben Wallace’s and a little worst than just about everyone else.

I’m a little disappointed that Captain America hasn’t said anything stupid on this board - I guess he saw Dank’s comment and realized that someone had beat him to the dumb-call-of-the-day…

  13. illfil27 says:

That’s what I meant. The T’Wolves have no true PG but Bassy. So if he proves to have a solid shot maybe in preseason he should get his minutes off the bench. With Jefferson, Foye and Davis being the 1., 2. and 3. scoring option on offense Bassy would also just have to distribute. 10 ppg along with 7-8 apg wouldn’t be bad numbers at all. I really don’t expect much of McCants, so if I’m wrong there Telfair would naturally have a harder time.

  14. Nathan says:

Where is Jason Terry on this list? Do you see him as a SG? Clearly, he has more value than two thirds of this list.

  15. TJ says:

umm… is iverson strictly considered shooting guard ? cmon.. he should be on here. wtf?

  16. Amar says:

the big issue between cp3 and d-will, and will continue to be a bigger issue over the course of their careers, is who plays more games. CP3 is bound to start missing more and more games. Deron had a groin injury and hopefully that’s all healed, but . . . if I had to put money on it, i’d put more money on deron playing 80 in the next 5 seasons than cp3.

I had both of them on my fantasy team last year, and got to see their numbers head to head for an entire season. CP will get you more points, threes and steals — and possibly boards, deron will get you more of everything else and play more games.

  17. Adam says:

NASH AT NUMBER ONE? FOR FANTASY? HAS ANYONE HERE ACTUALLY PLAYED / BEEN GOOD AT FANTASY? Gilbert Arenas is the DEF number 1 pick here. Nobody would ever draft Nash ahead of Arenas in fantasy ball. I will gladly write these columns for free, “Fantasy Doctor.” Oh ya, and nobody would ever take Billups ahead of Baron Davis. Baron Davis, although obviously obviously is an injury threat, could be top 10 nastiest fantasy players in the game.

    P.S. hate hate

  18. Chinglish says:

In FANTASY, you gotta go with CP over Deron for the steals, rebounds, FT%, and turnovers. The rest of the categories it is very unclear who will lead, whereas everyone knows Paul will lead in those cats.

Fantasy-wise it would be pretty bad to take Deron if Paul is still on the board.

  19. Andy Agams says:

we are looking for point guard, shooting guard, centre, forward urgently to join an oversea basketball team for more information email me at miss_andyagams@yahoo.com
