Sneak Preview

Dwight coverCarmelo cover
Dime #37, on newsstands 10/23

Normally we’d wait until the new issue of Dime hits newsstands before talking about it here. But since we’re pretty pumped about our latest creation, we couldn’t hold back. On Oct. 23, you can get your hands on Dime #37, our NBA preview issue. We’ve got two covers for this one: Dwight Howard for the East Coast, Carmelo Anthony for the West Coast. And with all respect to Kobe, LeBron, Duncan and the Boston trio, we think these two could be the most compelling stories in each conference.

In Carmelo’s case, with the way he played at the FIBA Tournament this summer and the chip he’s got on his shoulder trying to keep pace with ‘Bron and D-Wade when it comes to playoff success, it’s not out of the question that he could lead the league in scoring, win the MVP and take Denver farther than its ever gone in the postseason. As far as Dwight, like the cover says, he’s the new Beast of the East. With Shaq and KG hitting the twilight of their respective careers, Dwight is in position to be the dominant force in the conference for the next decade. This year he’s all about adding to his game to keep himself among the elite.

Also in the book we’ve got the NBA “Players 2 Watch” this year, including Dirk, Deng, Deron, LaMarcus and Yi. We’ve got exclusive NBA previews from the front lines, straight from All-Stars Gilbert Arenas and Carlos Boozer. And we went down to Atlanta to profile one of the League’s up-and-coming superstars, Joe Johnson, and get a look at his larger-than-life ride.

For the amateurs, we re-did the “Player’s Ball” college preview that we debuted last season — where Drew Neitzel and DeMarcus Nelson are among the NCAA stars breaking down the power conferences and letting you know which players will be making noise. And on the high school tip, we’ve got our Top 25 national player rankings featuring Lance Stephenson, Tyreke Evans and Brandon Jennings, among others.

Sounds like a good start, right? Be on the lookout for the new issue next week.

both those covers look off the hook, and im sure its gunna be an awesome read. but i took real offence with what you guys just said.

Yes. maybe dwight howard is the “beast of the east”, and yes maybe KG is “hitting the twilight years” but as long as KG can lead the league in rebounding and be the all round monster he has been his whole career i think you guys are pulling down the curtains to early. KG is THE big man in the east now.

thats not saying dwights story isnt compelling, but until the kid averages less turnovers than his point guard(or at least EVERYONE else on his team) and proves he has learnt how to pass a little its too early.

hmm maybe iv missed the point and that is why his story is the most compelling. but you guys couldnt look at me with a straight face and say you are more interested in how shard and DH12 get along than bostons big three. because then you would be lying to us all

    peace

My take: As an individual, Dwight’s story is more interesting this year. Boston’s trio isn’t as big of a story if it isn’t all three of them. Allen, Pierce and KG individually aren’t the story; it’s the unit that’s interesting.

How did Dwight get my body?

  4. Tom Toronto says:

Dwight’s story is more compelling because it’s still new, he’s a new-blood superstar, and there’s no doubt he will be malicious this year. Everybody already knows KG is sick, he’s BEEN sick for a long, long time. Saying KG is going to be big in the East is like saying cereal is dry without milk, everybody already knows!

I can hardly wait to get this in my mailbox, keep doing your thing DIME Crew.

  5. Captain America says:

Al Jefferson = 22 (very good present, great future)
    KG = 31 (great present)

    Future

  6. Andy Buckets says:

Dwight Howard aka Optimus Prime!! Dude is jacked!

Both covers are crack. Melo’ should have a big year and D. Howard and the Magic could make a playoff run.

    Good choices fellas!

    Giacomo,

Yes KG is the man in the East now, but let’s think about something that Bill Simmons said in his recent ESPN column: The best thing about sports is not the actual game, not the highlights or the “oh shit did you see that” with friends after. Instead, the best thing about sports is the anticipation – waking up the morning of your team’s game and thinking “game day,” or watching one of your favorite players blossom into something better than they have previously been. I would argue that is the reason that Jordan is such a compelling figure. He continued to improve, to exceed the expectations that he once set for himself.

With all that said, I think that is the reason that DWIGHT is a more interesting story than KG. Dwight might not stack up with KG today, but he is evolving to be possibly better than KG. I’d rather hear about what will make Dwight greater than what makes KG who he is.

On a seperate note, this seems like a good trade for both teams, right?

Kobe and Kwame for McGrady, M. James and Shane Battier

    The saleries work . . .

  9. bliz289 says:

Amanalone, interesting but it basically boils down to Kobe for T-Mac. I wouldn’t do that if I’m the Lakers. Kobe has a lot more left in the tank than T-Mac. What about Kobe to the Bulls for Gordon, Thomas, and more players/salaries?

  10. amanalone says:

I like the fact that the Lakers would be getting a superstar back in T-Mac, plus an ok PG and a wonderful addition in Shane Battier. I would much rather have T-Mac and Battier and James than Gordon, Thomas and some throw in’s. Wouldn’t you?

  11. doc says:

Thats a good trade for Houston.

  12. JCrom says:

The trade would keep both teams about where they are right now. Houston would probably make a little more noise though. End of the day I see the only benefit bein Kobe gettin out of LA. Unless someone can point somethin out I’m not seein.

  13. Stallion says:

Is KG even going to have a twilight?
