Big. Green. Envy.

Last Friday night, I was on a JetBlue flight out of NYC for Saturday’s Converse Open Gym / launch of the Wade 3 event in Miami. Being as it was a JetBlue flight, I was blessed with TV for the entire trip, delays and all.

As the flight was winding down, the Celtics / Wizards game on ESPN was starting up and the pre-game coverage was deep with talking heads, interviews with the “Big Three” and lots of over-the-top love of Celtics’ lore. That, along with some horrific turbulence, was definitely enough to make a Sixers fan ill.

And then, after the Wizards lineup was introduced, the ESPN coverage went silent and showed the Celtics’ pre-game intros, including this Opening Night video from the jumbotron at the Fleet-Garden-TD Banknorth-Garden-Center-whatever-it’s-called.

That’s when I realized what that sick feeling I had in my stomach really was: Big. Green. Envy.

I can vividly remember in 2001 being at Sixers games, the atmosphere in the arena when they played their opening video - a montage of highlights and clips of A.I. and Aaron McKie shadowboxing before games to the soundtrack from “Braveheart” - and the chills it gave me. The Celtics video brought me right back … until I settled in and though about how far we are from anything like that again in Philadelphia.

Am I jealous of Boston?

Definitely.

  1. Captain America says:

Celtics are a first round playoff team only paying the luxury tax for now and future.

  2. jo says:

    Captain America is a moron.

  3. Dime Magazine says:

Yeah, success definitely isn’t guaranteed for them. My point was though that it’s very cool when there’s a real buzz around your team, you know?

  4. Gee says:

LOL I knew Capt. would be the first one jumping on this. I am shocked he didn’t throw a jab at KG. LOL

Pat, I feel you. Those playoff games in 01 were crazy. Me and my boys would watch those player intros and get so hyped (kinda like the Dawkins video does). Now Im at school in Boston and went to the game on Friday, it was the same way. People were just nuts, from the moment I got out of the cab it was chaos. Not to mention that me and the girl I was with both had on Agent Zero shirts. Theyve come a long way from last year when I went and the attendance looked like (dare I say it) a Sixers game…
