It was a huge opening weekend in college basketball. Here’s everything you need to know about what happened …
6-3 G Jerel McNeal led Marquette to their first win on Saturday over IUPUI with 20 points.
In their first contest, Kansas forced 24 turnovers, came up with 15 steals and 5-11 sophomore G Sherron Collins surprisingly finished with a team high 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting to give KU a 107-78 win over Louisiana-Monroe. All 15 players on KU’s roster saw action … The Jayhawks followed up their highest opening night point total with an 85-62 win over UMKC. 6-10 PF Darrell Arthur had 13 points and 10 boards as all five starters scored in double figures. 6-3 G Mario Chalmers broke the Kangaroos’ back, hitting on 6-9 threes for 18 of his game-high 23 points.
The Dukies went berserk from beyond the arc in their first game, scoring 121 points on 16 three’s. 6-8 F Taylor King’s 5-7 performance from downtown led the Blue Devils as they hit on 57% of their three-point attempts.
Tennessee won handily, 80-63, over Temple, but 6-0 SG Chris Lofton only scored 10 points on 1-8 shooting, including an anemic 0-5 from three-point territory… It didn’t help the Owls that their dynamic duo of F Mark Tyndale and G Dionte Christmas shot a combined 7-26 for 23 points.
On the shoulders of 6-7 F Shane Clark’s 25 points, ’Nova dropped Stony Brook 86-64 for their first win of the season. Freshmen 6-1 G Corey Fisher didn’t play in the opener and 6-5 G/F Corey Stokes struggled to find his rhythm. 6-1 G Scottie Reynolds did just enough for the Wildcats, scoring 13 points on 5-11 shooting. Despite their guard-heavy attack, the ’Cats outscored the Seawolves 40-12 in the paint thanks to Clark and 6-8 F Dante Cunningham’s 14 points.
Stanford has looked very convincing in their first three starts, getting points from plenty of sources. They killed Harvard in their first game by close to 50 points – with none of their starters played more than 17 minutes in that contest. 6-0 G Drew Shiller had 18 against the Crimson and 15 against Northwest St., going 7-9 from downtown in those two games. So far the Cardinal has gotten double figures from nine different players in their three wins. 6-3 G Anthony Goods gave UC Santa Barbara the goods with a team season high 23 points.
6-10 F/C Kevin Love led UCLA with 22 points and 13 rebounds, missing only two shots from the field, despite the absence of 6-0 G Darren Collison. His thirteen rebound performance topped Charles O’Bannon’s freshman record of 12 boards from 1993.
In their 84-72 win over Troy, unranked Alabama outrebounded the Trojans 57-34 (which included a 22-point, 23-rebound game from 6-8 PF Richard Hendrix). Even though the Tide committed 25 turnovers, shot 20% from three, they were incredibly efficient inside of the arc (50.7% overall).
Florida is off to a 2-0 start thanks to a good first game from freshman 6-6 G/F Nick Calathes (21 points) and junior 6-0 G Walter Hodge (15 points), and a well-balanced second game in which Calathes, 6-8 F Adam Allen both had 15, freshman 5-11 G Jai Lucas added 13 and 6-10 F/C Marreese Speights led the Gators with 16.
Georgetown overcame a slow start and a very quiet game from 6-8 F Patrick Ewing Jr. (0 points), 6-8 F Vernon Macklin (0 points) and Jeremiah Rivers (0 points) despite all playing more than 15 minutes. 7-1 C Roy Hibbert is on the road to improving on last year’s preposterous 69.1 FG% with 23 point game on 9-11 shooting.
The Atlantic Sun has a mortal grip on the Top 25. A-Sun standouts Mercer toppled No-18 USC fell by 15, 96-81. The Trojans shot 40% from the field and 56% from the free throw line; some might see 6-4 G O.J. Mayo as the hero for his 32-point night, but the freshman needed 27 shots to hit the 30-point threshold in his first collegiate game.
6-6 G/F Malik Hairston, 5-6 G Tajuan Porter and 6-4 G Bryce Taylor all scored 17 points in Oregon’s opener and 6-9 F Maarty Leunen grabbed 14 rebounds in Oregon’s first win of the year, 100-70 over Pepperdine. Ernie Kent’s team played terrific defense, holding Pepperdine to 22 total makes from the field… The Ducks looked strong in their second game as Porter impressed again with an ultra-accurate 10-15 shooting day and 28 points. Note that Leunen is cleaning the glass so far, and after 10 more boards, he has 24 in two games… The Ducks might be the best three-point shooting team in the Pac-10, hitting on 45% of their attempts in two games. Leunen’s ability to stroke it makes a substantial difference, and it never hurts when Tajuan Porter hits on 5-8 from deep in Oregon’s 80-64 win over Pacific.
In K-State’s first game, 6-6 G/F Bill Walker didn’t play because of an injured thumb, but rookie sensation 6-10 F/C Michael Beasley eviscerated Sacramento State with 32 points and 24 rebounds (12 offensive) as he almost single handedly out rebounded Sacramento State (29 total rebounds). In a 76-66 win over Pittsburgh State, Beasley chipped in another 30 points and 14 rebounds, earning College Hoops Net Player of the Week honors.
Gonzaga won their first game Sunday night as top freshman 6-10 F Austin Daye had 20 and 10 boards in just 27 minutes of action, including two three-pointers.
Pittsburgh joins Stanford at 3-0, topping Saint Louis 69-58 in a well-fought game on Sunday. The Panthers excelled from the stripe down the stretch, hitting 8 of 10 free throws in the final 1:19. It was an impressive game from freshman 6-7 F DeJuan Blair (16 points) who has dropped thirty pounds since first coming to Pitt.
The Ramblin’ Wreck lost their first opener since 1993 on Friday, as 6-6 F Kyle Hines made 10 of 12 shots for 25 points and an UNC Greensboro 83-74 win. It was a tough return to the court for 6-3 G Lewis Clinch as he hit only 2-13 shots for 5 points. Tech rebounded with a 99-85 win over Tennessee State, led by 6-10 F/C Alace Aminu, the older brother to top national recruit and Wake Forest-commit Al-Farouq Aminu. The elder brother notched 25 points to bring the Yellow Jackets even at 1-1.
