Dime U – Hello Brooklyn

Who is the best New York-bred guard in college hoops today? UConn’s A.J. Price? Louisville’s Edgar Sosa? Kansas’ Russell Robinson? Kentucky’s Ramel Bradley? Seton Hall’s Brian Laing? Nope. The conversation begins and ends with Levance Fields, the Pitt junior (Xaverian H.S. in Brooklyn) who downed the Dukies last night, 65-64 in OT. on the ultimate “F-U” step-back in David McClure’s grill.

Fields orchestrated Pitt’s comeback with a runner that gave the Panthers their first lead, 51-50, since the game’s first basket. He hit Sam Young on a pick-and-pop. Then he drilled the game-winner. “They had a hard time guarding him and keeping him in front (of them),” said Pitt coach Jamie Dixon. “With the coaches afterward, we talked about him hitting that shot a hundred times. Him hitting his shot going left.”

Fields’ best friend, teammate Mike Cook writhed in pain on the ground minutes earlier after landing awkwardly on a jump stop. We hope it’s not as bad as it looked – his left knee completely buckled. It was tough to watch.

The Blue Devils simply could not box out DeJuan Blair. His 15-point, 20-rebound night was Barkley-esque. But in all fairness, CB34 would have rocked the rim in transition where Blair laid it in. Is Big Baby a more fitting comparison?

Oklahoma finally turned the corner against a ranked team in a four-point win over Gonzaga. OU’s frontline of Blake Griffin, Longar Longar and Tony Crocker combined for 46 points on 18-of-35 shooting and 24 boards, one rebound less than the entire ‘Zag squad. But it wasn’t for a lack of effort from Jeremy Pargo. He torched OU for 28 points (11-for-18 shooting). Yet Sooners coach Jeff Capel switched Austin Johnson onto him Pargo in the second half and ordered him to run under screens to force deeper jumpers. Pargo missed his last three shots.

hahah yea that’s exactly right Fields gave McClure the F-U!! John Cena anybody?

  2. Andrew says:

Yes! So happy that someone was on the same page as me there… Fields took a full-step back for that game-winner WITHOUT pushing off. I feel like it’s becoming so commonplace for people to extend their off hand when trying to get a shot off. But Fields just deked the hell out of McClure.

  3. NYCTops says:

Numbers don’t lie, A.J. Price is the best NYC guard. And he got the best nickname of all these cats. They call him the Amityville Horror.

    Price: 12.1 points, 6 asists, 3.3 rebs, .45 field goals, .33 3′s
    Fields: 11.8 points, 5.6 asists, 3.9 rebs .45 field goals, .29 3′s

And he don’t have other guys like Fields does

What do you mean, NYCTops? UConn has talent.

  5. NYCTops says:

Not like Pitt. Jeff Adrien ain’t DeJuan Blair even if everyone says that he is and they ain’t got a shooter like Ronald Ramon to boost assist numbers.

  6. Andrew says:

Hmm… let’s not get ahead of ourselves NYCTops. I buy your argument that Pitt has a better supporting cast than UConn, but the differences in their numbers are really negligible. But I actually might say that UConn’s system creates more assists because of strong post play (Adrien, Thabeet, Stanley Robinson) while Pitt gets more of their work done off the bounce, thus lowering assist numbers.
But as Jay Bilas said last night, Fields is the head and shoulders of the Panthers club. He is the best NY-guard because of his leadership and toughness. Fields hits game winners against Duke at the Garden. Price scored in bunches during UCONN’s game vs. Memphis at MSG but then didn’t show up during the second half.
