December 13, 1983 – The Pistons and Nuggets went berserk on this night 24 years ago in a record-setting game that took three overtimes to determine the winner. Ultimately Detroit came out on top 186-184 in the game that set the NBA record for the most points scored by a single team (Detroit – 186), the most total points in a game (370), the most field goals by a single team (Detroit – 74), the most field goals in a game (142) and the most assists in a game (93). Four players scored 40 or more points: the Pistons were led by Isiah Thomas’ 47 points while the Nuggets got 51 from Kiki Vandeweghe. But even more remarkably, there were only two three-pointers made for the entire game!
December 13, 1991 – Robert Parish became the fifth player to appear in 1,200 career games during the Celtics 117-97 win over Seattle at the Boston Garden. Parish scored 6 points but grabbed 13 boards, as Larry Legend led the C’s with 28 points, 5 boards and 8 assists. The late Reggie Lewis contributed 10 points, a far lower output than his team-leading 20.8 ppg average.
December 13, 1994 – Who holds the single-game scoring record at the old Spectrum in Philly? During a 105-90 win over the Heat, Willie Burton one-upped Michael Jordan’s 52 point performance during the ’88-89 season with 53 of his own. Burton made 12-19 shots from the field but made a killing from the stripe, hitting 24-28 attempts.
December 13, 2000 – John Stockton notched assist number 14,000 during a 111-102 loss to Milwaukee, thereby increasing his lead over Magic Johnson (No-2 all-time assists) to 3,859. Mr. Spokane doled out nine assists to go with 16 points and The Mailman dropped 35 points. Glenn Robinson, Ray Allen and Sam Cassell combined for 71 points on the other end.
