This time one year ago, Heat/Wolves at least would have been worth watching for the superstar factor: Shaq, D-Wade, Garnett. This year it was basically a battle for Worst Team in the League, and Miami lost (or won, depending on how you look at it). Rock bottom came with about two minutes left, with the Heat down by six and looking for a critical bucket. D-Wade went iso, crossed his man up, but just as he was going toward the basket dribbled off his foot out of bounds. Wade stopped in his tracks, looked in the air, closed his eyes, shook his head and his whole body slumped. That pretty much summed up Miami’s season so far … Rashad McCants has been silently getting buckets lately. He dropped 27 on Miami, a few days after getting 21 against Dallas and 34 against Denver. McCants is a player — you just wonder where he’ll fit into the plans once Randy Foye is back in the picture and Minnesota’s starts to figure out what it wants to do with Telfair and Gerald Green’s development. Not to mention Marko Jaric is still lurking around … Thinking he was gonna go nuts, or at least put up a thousand shots in an attempt to go nuts, we were kinda disappointed in Ricky Davis: 5 points on 2-for-5 shooting and five turnovers … Yesterday we had the Wolves at the bottom of our NBA Hit List power ranking and Miami right down there with them. Assuming both teams hold true to form (a.k.a. keep losing), the Wolves should finally be out of the basement come next week. See, Minnesota fans: they are making progress … Leave it to the Sonics’ D to make the Cavs — and not just LeBron — look like a well-oiled offensive machine. Seattle didn’t give up triple-digits, but still got Swiss Cheese’d up by everyone from Daniel Gibson (17 pts, 5 treys) to Anderson Varejao (14 pts) to Sasha Pavlovic (13 pts). LeBron had an easy 22 in an easy win. Up by 18 going into the fourth, one of the Cavs’ announcers said, “Not even missing nail clippers can stand in the way” of a win. Not sure what that meant, but we’re assuming ‘Bron had lost his clippers earlier in the game. If that’s the case, at least he’s going for the Mike Bibby thing and not chomping the nails anymore … Dwight Howard’s been struggling lately, but last night brought him some relief in the form of Brad Miller, Mikki Moore and the Sacramento front line. Dwight (29 pts, 15 rebs) got back into rhythm easy; there were multiple plays where he’d elevate and drop in a baby hook before Miller could even get his feet off the ground … The Kings broadcast ran a graphic of players who have averaged 20 points and 10 boards in a season while shooting 60 percent from the field. The names: Wilt, Kareem, Shaq and Barkley. Dwight is currently on pace to add his name … As far as Dwight’s team, they couldn’t stop the bleeding, getting beat by a squad that doesn’t have its three best players (Artest, Bibby, K-Mart II) and is relying on Beno Udrih and Quincy Douby playing major minutes … Stan Van Gundy’s “short-sleeved open blazer with t-shirt in the exact same color as the blazer and pants” look was, um, interesting. Some rather nice pieces from the Phillip Michael Thomas Collection … Coming off maybe the low point of their season — getting waxed in Portland by the mostly Roy-less Blazers — the Jazz came home and destroyed the Pacers. In garbage time it was all about getting Morris Almond his first NBA bucket; Jason Hart was deliberately feeding Almond on every Utah possession, to the point where Almond would get a pass, throw it back to Hart, then get it right back with Hart imploring him to shoot. Almond missed his first four shots before finally getting a layup near the end of the game, and the entire Utah bench stood up and cheered for him. Far cry from Almond dropping 40 and 50 like he’s regularly been doing in the D-League … Speaking of Portland, looking at the possible return of Darius Miles on the site yesterday, reader Myrie commented, “New Jersey might be a good look for him. Playing behind Vince and RJ should be aight for Miles. Portland shouldn’t even care what they get in return. Trade him for some interns or some Brooklyn Italian cuties to be named later.” … Wait, the Knicks won on the road? That’s not supposed to happen. Eddy Curry — who’s been so bad lately we were expecting him to get savagely booed by the NY crowd during tonight’s game against the Rockets — staved off some of those boos by giving his old team 29 points and 8 boards in Chicago … Earlier in the day we looked at E-City’s draft class in our 2001 Lottery Do-Over. Back then, Eddy was the 4th overall pick. But if GMs knew then what they know now, where would he go in a field of bigs that includes Kwame Brown, Tyson Chandler, The Dalembeast, DeSagana Diop, Pau Gasol, Mehmet Okur and Zach Randolph? … Looking at the Class of ‘03 do-over, one of our readers made their own ‘96 do-over draft and had Derek Fisher going AHEAD of Stephon Marbury. If anything, it shows how far Steph has slipped in the eyes of the public. Derek Fisher? … Jason Kidd’s latest triple-double: 13 points, 11 boards and 12 assists in a loss to Charlotte yesterday that snapped Jersey’s five-game win streak. That’s three straight triple-doubles for Kidd, but guess what? The record is NINE, by Wilt. Anyway, how is it that some people are actually saying J-Kidd shouldn’t be an All-Star this year? ESPN’s John Hollinger and his silly player efficiency stat had him leaving Kidd off the Eastern Conference squad in favor of Jose Calderon. Even the Raptors fans have to admit that’s ridiculous … It wasn’t that long ago that you’d make a point to watch Michigan vs. Indiana, was it? Now the Hoosiers are a Top-10 team while we seriously couldn’t name three players on Michigan’s roster. Eric Gordon hit the Wolverines for 23 points in a win yesterday, and D.J. White beasted UM for 21 points and 22 boards. Where’s Mo Taylor when you need him? … We’re out like Seattle’s resistance …

How long until they refer to buying out a player as “the Larry Hughes Clause” and how long into the offseason do the Cavs wait to get him off their cap space? Maybe they could trade Sasha for Patrick O’Bryant and some loose change from the Warriors. Seriously, why wouldn’t the Warriors trade their 12th man with Brandan Wright sitting directly next to him on the bench? You should only take on one project at a time if you ever hope to get anything accomplished. Peace.

I saw also that John Hollinger article giving Calderon the All-Star nod over Kidd. That’s ridiculous. Calderon is good but Kidd is playing great this season, apart from scoring.
Hollinger made some vague statistics called pure point ratio with some 100-(Assist*2/3-Turnover) calculation where Calderon is ahead of Nash, Kidd, Paul. I bet with the right formula you can make a case for anyone to be the best in the league. Give it up, Hollinger! I’m believing less in his PER system also..

Solid win last night from the Knicks with Nate (10 assists) and Jamal (24pts) and Eddy (29pts, 4blks!)
The worst thing about the Brezec/Hermann/Mohammed trade? Okafor was exposed as being not much better of a player than Mohammed
Nice game from Darko last night in the loss (12pts, 4 blks, 11 reb). He is averaging about 3.5 blocks over his last 5 games.

I’ll agree with that reader who ranked Derek Fisher over Marbury. From a GM perspective, I would argue that you want guys who want to win and put that above all else (Winning = more fans coming to games = more $$$).
That said, the teams Derek have played on have a much better record than the ones Marbury has been one. Now, one could argue that Derek has had better rosters, with playing with Kobe, Shaq, Carlos B, Deron Williams, etc….
However, by the same note, Marbury hasn’t had bad comrades himself: Garnett, Amare, Marion even Keith Van Horn (in Keith’s prime).

Two things:
1) Fuck John Hollinger and his moronic stats analysis. Anyone who knows anything about NBA basketball knows that stats don’t tell the whole story about a basketball player. Here’s a suggestion: analyze the game of basketball and actually WATCH games. That’s how you know who’s a good player. Stats are usually misleading. We all know Jason Kidd’s shot isn’t the greatest, but that doesn’t make another PG better than him simply because he can shoot better and gets to pass the ball to much better shooters. Calderon is good, but he’s no J-Kidd.
2) I’ve been a Michigan fan for over 15 years now, and it kills me to see how much they’ve fallen off. It’s been a steady downhill slide since the Fab 5 left. They just can’t recruit anybody any more. At least the football program is one of the best in the country.

I was the one who did the ‘96 draft do-over. The reason I put Fisher above Marbury isn’t individual stats but the fact that Fisher is a proven leader and Marbury is a proven headcase. Individual statistics would make Marbury an obvious choice. What individual stat sheets don’t tell is the locker room influence and I think even when Fisher was in Golden State stinking it up his team was better than Marbury’s. Case in point, Look at UTAH last year with Fish and look at them this year without him.

i think Calderon is the third best point guard in the NBA, barely losing out to Nash and a distance behind Paul. what’s the case for Kidd over Calderon again? triple doubles? Kidd turns the ball over 3.76 times a game, Calderon 1.32. i’m a little confused as to why people have an aneurysm every time Calderon’s name is dropped in with the elites, when he statistically holds his own (even discounting his reduced minutes, he hangs in there with Kidd minus rebounds). and have you ever seen Calderon play, Dime? so smooth and efficient, undeniably making his teammates better.. and he shoots almost fifteen percent better than Kidd from the floor! at the very least, there is a case that could be made for Calderon. it’s not so ridiculous. triple doubles are overrated.

Ok I know it’s early but for the Rockets to go 5-2 without Tracy is above what’s expected. Head, Skip and others appear to be applying themselves more. Getting that solid W, over Washinton (yea I know they are not the NBA elite) was nice.
The Heat need to continue to drop Wade’s minutes. Not to low but just some more because for real…there season is done. No sense in him possibly getting injured with a bunch of minutes. It’s nothing for him to prove because 1. They not gone win a lot of games left 2. With his style of play he can get injured easy 3. The whole world knows Wade can play so save him to next season when hopefully your team is repaired and better. The Last Don huh? ….Comdey.
Oh yea and look for Pat to quit this year or next.
Ok this is just GEE, but word is McGrady might be coming back soon. If I am the Rockets I would sit dude out some more and then after prolly 5 games bring him back in slowly (that’s provided the Rockets keep trying hard without him). I mean most everyone expects Tracy to get re-injured again at some point and time and if not him then Yao cause they switch out who is injured a lot lol. Still it’s good the bench appears to finding themselves. I hope they don’t go and F up against NY tonight.
Nice W. by NY last night too.
DIME did you all get word of Boston possibly going after Sam Cassell? I am thinking he could at least provide them with that playoff experience come around that time. I certainly would try to get him.
While I am on Boston in looking back at that game against Detroit. Was it really that Big Baby had a big game or was it that Detroit really didn’t play D on him. I mean I know either way he hit the shots he had and was going strong for them. Still in looking at some of those shots a lot of time he was just open and it wasn’t like he was posted up or creating his own shot. Still I doubt he will be open next time they meet.
Last I was watching an old episode of Martin last night and they had Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on there playing this guy called Dr. Sky Hook. Kareem’s acting career really spans some time cause dude was also in one of Bruce Lee’s old joints..Game of Death I think and then to be on Martin too. Wow. Bruce broke him off in Game of Death but Kareem got his in with his shades and fro. LOL

Yeah….dude smack up his wife (none of us can defend him on that one; thats just flat out wrong and a puss move by a grown man), but it was more than a few yrs ago. Allow Kidd to move on. He still took his team to the Finals in back-to-back seasons (Not even the Spurs have done that).

Dime put up a list of shooting guards last month ranking the top 10. Jamal Crawford got honorable mention—-I’m ok with that. But I posted that he had/has the best cross over dribble of all the guards in the league and the best(most underrated) shake-n-bake baller in the league. The NBA allstar reserves are selected by Guard, Forward, Center. There is no breakdown of point guard or shooting guard–just guard in general.
So Calderon will have a tough time making it. Kidd/Wade to start, but then Chauncey Billups, Richard Hamilton, Vince Carter, Ray Allen, Michael Redd, Jason Richardson, Ben Gordon and Andre Igudaola will get nods before Calderon as a reserve.

How can anyone say that triple doubles are overrated no matter how they are gotten? For real, I don’t care for the way Kidd gets his rebounds but the bottom line is he still gets triple doubles.
If they were overrated then more players would and could be doing it. If that is what is Kidd’s niche then I am not gone knock that. Everyone is not a 20 rebound getter or 81 point scorer. Still to say if you are at least bringing 10 points to the table 10 assist and 10 boards if nothing else its a contribution in all areas. I think more of these star players should have more triple doubles to there credits.
This is just Gee but yea I feel Kobe, T-Mac, Wade and others should have more trip-dubs than they have.
I am not knocking 22 12 and 5 cause that is tight too. I am just saying to a triple double is an accomplishment to be proud of. I apparently hold it in higher standard than others. That’s cool though.

I cannot definitively defend Kidd shooting pct. We all know he a lousy shooter. Although, he’ll make big 3’s in the fourth quarter.
Triple double are not overrated. How can you really say/believe that? And for Kidd specifically. He’s not a scoring point guard; never has been. But he’s the best rebounder point guard in the league. Who cares if it’s only 10,10,10. It’s a strong feat. I’m sure he can get 25,15,15 if he feels like it. And Kidd does it with ease!!….and he’s 34yrs old. Gotta respect that!!
Going to the Finals back-to-back seasons is a strong acheivement too. I couldn’t care less that YOU think the conference was weak. You still gotta play the games, and you still gotta win. Yeah…they got whipped; but Kidd got them there.
Can Calderon do that with the Raps? Can he even get them passed the 1st round? Can he even crack the starting lineup on his own squad if TJ were healthy?

Talk about meaningless stats - what’s a triple-double, anyway, at least for Kidd? 10-12 points, 10-12 rebounds, 10 assists? With a shooting percentage below 40%? I don’t care about stats as much as I care about what they mean to a player’s value, but it’s pretty obvious that shooting that badly doesn’t add to a player’s value.
Fine, he’s Jason Kidd. He’s a legend. Doesn’t mean shooting like Kirk Hinrich makes him a better player than Jose Calderon. Calderon’s having a decent season… don’t start saying, “Well, it’s Jason Kidd, he SHOULD be an All-Star.” I want to watch the best players play - Kidd’s not one of the best anymore, triple-doubles or not.
Putting that much stock in a triple-double means you’re more impressed with an 11-11-10 game than you are with (for example) a 35-8-6 game. No, thanks.
