Where the hell did that come from? If you had seen the Knicks’ previous game — Friday night’s loss to the Raptors where they got mercilessly gutted by Chris Bosh — and been reading the NY papers, it would appear as if everything was perilously close to completely falling apart: Zach Randolph was beefing with Isiah, Stephon Marbury was publicly questioning the way he was being used, and rumors were swirling that James Dolan was planning to can Isiah sooner rather than later. So naturally, we assumed last night’s matchup with the Pistons at MSG was gonna get Wanda-style ugly … Turns out the game was ugly, but not in the way anyone would have predicted. The Knicks played probably their best game of the year, the Pistons played maybe their worst game ever, and in the end the Knicks had an 89-65 win. Yes, that’s 65 points for Detroit. Those are like Fort Wayne Pistons numbers. Rip Hamilton couldn’t buy a bucket, Tayshaun Prince literally didn’t make anything, Z-Bo ended his short stint in Isiah’s doghouse with 25 points and 8 boards, and Jamal Crawford made one of the sickest shots you’ll see all year … In the first half the MSG big screen started showing the Cowboys/Giants game, right when the ‘Boys were making that last-gasp drive in the fourth quarter. No problem, since the basketball game was in the middle of a timeout, but when it was time to get back to Knicks/Pistons, someone at MSG had to make a call: Either show Dallas’ fourth-down play — the one that could determine the Giants’ season — or cut off the football game so Eddy Curry could shoot his free throws in peace. They decided to leave the game on, and no one noticed Curry missing his freebies because they were cheering for the Giants … The Dime crew was actually in MSG all day leading up to the Knicks/Pistons game for the Nike Super 6 Invitational, a one-day showcase of six of the best high school squads in the New York/New Jersey area. Each one of the three games was good and the turnout was great; we spotted Pee Wee Kirkland, Irv Gotti and Roy Williams among those in the crowd. On the floor there were standout performances by West Virginia-bound Kevin Jones (25 pts, 19 rebs) and junior Sherrod Wright (20 pts, 11 rebs) from Mount Vernon H.S. (NY), who we featured in Dime #27 (and Jones again in Dime #34); Kansas-bound Quintrell Thomas (25 pts, 13 rebs, about 10 dunks) and newly-minted Tar Heel Dexter Strickland from St. Patrick’s (NJ); UConn-bound Kemba Walker (cover of Bounce #13) from Rice H.S. in Harlem; and St. Benedict’s (NJ) big-man combo of Samardo Samuels (headed to Louisville) and Greg Echenique … As we were leaving the Garden following the Super 6, the Knicks and Pistons were preparing for their game. One of our boys saw Walter Herrmann in the hallway and asked, “Who is #5 on Detroit? He has really nice hair.” … The longer that Blazers/Raptors lasted, it just seemed like Portland was destined to pull out the W. At the end of regulation, Portland seemed pretty done until Travis Outlaw hit a three plus the foul to erase a four-point hole with 16 seconds left. Jamario Moon was the one who broke the rule every player has hammered into their head in that situation — DON’T FOUL THE SHOOTER. Then at the end of the first OT, Martell Webster bricked what would have been the game-tying three, but Brandon Roy (33 pts, 10 asts) came up with the offensive rebound and hit his own triple to force OT #2. But that’s when Chris Bosh basically said “Eff this” and took over, getting some crucial buckets in the extra-extra frame. CB4 finished with 38 points, 14 boards and 3 blocks in the win. Coming off that 40-point game Bosh put up against the Knicks, the Pistons had better study up before their game with Toronto tomorrow … Yes, Kobe was sick with that respiratory infection, but Mike Miller was still giving him the business. From the outset, the Grizzlies kept running the same curl play — Miller starting on the baseline, getting a screen, curling to the middle of the floor and BONG — and Mike was hitting over and over again. (Check out Dime #38 to see how Miller is so automatic with that jumper.) Miller ended up with 27 points, Kobe had 37, and the Grizzlies actually took L.A. down to the wire on the road … Kwame Brown can’t just have a good game, can he? Kwame was only on the court because Andrew Bynum had hurt his knee earlier, and made a great outlet pass to Kobe for a layup that put the Lakers up three in crunch time. But after Rudy Gay tied it up with a three, Kwame (6 rebs, 3 blks) ended up with the ball on L.A.’s next possession — and missed a dunk with 9.2 seconds left. But he did get fouled, so Kwame stepped to the line, knocked down the first FT, then missed the second so badly that the carom caught everyone off-guard and went out of bounds. Fortunately for Kwame, since Memphis couldn’t convert on their end, he’ll go down as having made the game-winner … Pau Gasol’s line: 21 points, 18 boards, 8 dimes, 4 blocks … After Yao had the ball slapped out of his hands by Tyson Chandler a couple times down the stretch of Rockets/Hornets — an eventual Houston loss — Rick Adelman had this to say to reporters: “A superstar is supposed to get calls and he doesn’t get the calls. Simple as that.” Seriously? Is Adelman even arguing that Yao definitely got fouled, or is he just saying Yao should get borderline calls because he’s Yao? … Despite those turnovers, Yao torched Chandler for 30 points and 16 boards and made some big shots down the stretch. Problem is, Chris Paul (19 pts, 11 asts) made more big-time shots … The Warriors held a ceremony prior to their game with the Pacers to honor C.J. Watson for being the 100th NBA call-up from the D-League. Mitch Richmond presented him with the award, and Watson looked less than happy. Not the greatest thing to brag on. And now you know the Warriors are kinda put in a bind: If they send Watson back to the D-League tomorrow, they look like some jerks … We’re out like Yao getting calls …

Brown says:
I read the box score from the Raptors-Blazers game yesterday, and they only gave Jamario Moon 2 blocks! I watched the game, and I swear he must have had 5-6. Is there a better shot-blocking SF in the league? I seriously doubt so. He missed a two-handed put-back dunk in the second quarter that I swear would have been one of the dunks of the year. He was literally looking down at the rim! I have to admit, I’ve loved his game since training camp, and I can’t wait to see him in the dunk contest. He’s got some of the craziest hops in the entire league.
Also, is it too early to label Andrea Bargnani a bust? I know Bryan Colangelo is still enamoured with him, but I’m starting to wonder if he’ll even last another 5 years in the league. He looks CLUELESS on the basketball court. I’d trade him for Dalembeast in a heartbeat, but that’s just me.

Like Dime said in the Joakim piece, it’s kind of hard to consider someone a bust this early in their career, I think. Dalembert has been in the League for how long? And he’s still not that good. The fact that you’re talking about a second year player in the same sentence as a “good” (questionable) starting center says a lot, I think.

GEE ...Can the NBA have a 4 point line? says:
Dang it feels good to see people up on it,
Flip 7 keys in a week and didn’t flaunt it.
Amusing.
Truth be told you have to look at certain teams in different perspectives in the case of certain wins and losses.
Like the D. Ok sure they got beat by the Knicks, I mean they got beat like ruddy mule! Still most of us know that in a 7 games series the Knicks would get squashed. So you really can celebrate that the Knicks did get them one, but you can’t per-say down play Detroit. I say over and over it’s 82 games. In that stint your squad or any squad is gone get hit with injuries (Tracy), problems (Noah), being tired and just tons of other stuff.
So right now things have a certain direction but we won’t know what it will look like come playoff time.
Say for instance KG gets hurt in Boston and is out for the playoffs…you know a bunch of cats will start writing them off.
We still don’t know what major trades may take place, you usually get 1 - 2 good ones per year. I mean the most recent noise is circulating around McGrady.
I am just saying so much could change between now and then so always keep that in mine before your just hand a team the trophy or write a certain team completely off….unless they are like the Heat or Wolves lol.
Lakers are balling I can’t even front.
Houston is doing well without McGrady but they really need a clutch guy that won’t turn the ball over in critical periods ..be it a foul or not.
Bosh is starting to get ill!
Tyson is doing his thing too and I don’t mean Mike.
All these Knicks need to find a new place. Lets send some to Houston, Washinton, L.A. Clips and Lake and Memphis.
LOL Mr. Moon the other squad thanks you.

Yao doesn’t deserve superstar phantom calls yet because his team hasnt done anything yet and his game is wayyyyy too much finese. That aside are the hornets contenders or pretenders at this point?Personally I think just cuz they play defense their about as good a pick as the suns. And is anyone from the 07 draft outside of durant and horford gonna do anything? and i dont mean 30 year old rookies. conley, julian wright, brewer, thad young, etc.. where are you…Why was yao takin the last second shot anyway?Isn’t that why the rockets have 9 guards on the roster?
p.s Noci DOES get dunked on alot. And sure, bein a brave guy and challenging every dunk is commendable, but a what point do you realize “hey, I cant jump and I’m not a shot blocker” and stop pretending

Conley’s about to turn up the heat. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that he gets back and now all of a sudden, Mike Miller and Gasol are startin to put up big numbers. Hopefully, Oden comes back strong to that Blazer team next season but I feel you on the weakness of this draft. I haven’t even seen Julian Wright, brendan wright. thad Young’s startin to come on, but this rookie class is hopefully just gettin off to a slow start cuz they lookin weak right now.
I gotta put the Hornets above the Suns right now cuz after all the starters match up, the suns can’t match up with Tyson and CP3 vs. Nash is a wash. Maybe Barbosa gets the advantage over B-Jax, but that’s about it

GEE ...I am the 4th Don says:
I don’t know about plenty of ballers doc. I think this class is mediocre.
Anyway Mark that is what I am saying. That is just the importance of Tracy right there. I mean sure Tracy is more than just a last second shot, but Yao is not who I want to have the rock when the clock is ticking, specially with him not likely to get a call.
Sigh…Tracy just needs to get healthy and stay healthy bottom line.
Anyway Chris Paul is showing his @#$. I must admit him and Tyson got something going.
Trades I want to happen: (Should have made this list round Chri-mus)
Sam Cassell to Boston - He can hit big shots and has playoff s’perience.
Deron to Houston - I rather Houston add then let McGrady go
Zach Randolph to Detroit - no reason I just feel he would fit.
Chris Bosh to New Jersey - Toronto ain’t going nowhere and Jersey could use him.
Yea, yea, yeaaaaa I know none of these will happen just food for my own thought.
I am out like LeBron’s speeding ticket

Y’all trying to trash Yao on that last play w/Chris Paul need to slow your roll. It was a pick and roll and Yao got stuck on Paul and Chris def took advantage of it. I dont care if that was Dwight or Amare or Bynum; same results. Only thing you could say is that Yao should have stepped back, defended the paint and give Chris Paul the wide open jump shot. Give Byron Scott (or CP) the cred for calling that play.
If you watched the game you would see that Yao was killing Tyson in the second half. He was clutch and they kept giving him the ball. If the Rockets won i bet you no one will be giving him credit for being clutch; but since they lost its Yao’s fault. Yeah. Anyways Rockets match up horribly against the hornets (esp David West) even when the hornets were losing the rockets still struggled against them.
Did someone just call Moon the best shot blocking small foward? Did Josh Smith retire???

bron, CP only had one layup, not a couple. and he’d do that to any C in the league. it’s called a mismatch — look it up. if anyone on the hornets was “beasting”, it was david west. why no mention of him? he’s almost averaging 20/10 so far.
rockets didn’t have another consistent scorer other than yao. their winning streak was fueled by multiple guys contributing, which just didn’t happen last night. defense and yao were the only reasons they were even in a position to win.

To whoever said yao doesn’t deserve “phantom calls”, i sat a few feet from courtside and saw yao’s hands getting smacked by tyson chandler on both possessions that resulted in turnovers. The slap was definitely audible, too. So get your eyes checked and watch the replay before calling it a phantom foul.

Dime
For being a magazine about basketball and the basketball lifestyle, I am disappointed to see that you made no mention whatsoever of the 7 basketball players killed on their way home from a tournament. It was over the news, and even the Raptors gave a moment of silence for the victims. If your gonna write about basketball, then respect the game and respect the players.

a few of you all really need to quit riding peoples jocks..every excuse in the book on how yao can never mess up lol. FIrst off all jonny, stop takin everything i say so literal, its called sarcasm, look it up. And I said a couple because one play 6′3 chris paul straight up bodied yao out the way when goin for a layup, and then the next time down, yao stepped into help chris faked him and had him swingin at the air before he could recover. I didn’t mention david west because it wasn’t really that serious.
Iso: yes, it was a boched play, but still, you run that screen and roll with batteir or someone who could shoot. at no time do you want the ball in yaos hands with the game on the line like that and last night was a perfect example. play goes wrong and your 7′5 center is stuck shooting a 3. If a sf came and set the screen, they could of at least created alil.
cix or whatever your name is…omg cry me a river, the guys is 7′5 and you want a foul ever time his hand gets smacked? EVERY player gets fouled, let alone centers. Their not gonna get those calls. VEry few superstars get those calls, let alone quasi superstars like yao. Look at shaqs career and count how many times people slapped, and grabbed him but he didn’t get the foul. yao isn’t kobe, jordan or wade so hes not gettin that call ya. so while i’m gettin my eyes checked why dont you grow some balls and stop lookin for a bail out reason.

Bron
quasi superstar for yao (like tmac for me)
