How would the Lakers adjust to life without Andrew Bynum? Playing a Sonics team against which he usually drops plenteous buckets, Kobe Bryant decided to go into Tony Montana mode (“Who put this $*** together? Me, that’s who!”) and had his eyes locked onto the rim — on his first 10 touches he shot the ball 9 times, and the only reason poor Jeff Green didn’t have a chalk outline of himself on the court after the first 10 minutes is because Kobe took a while to get heated up .. Once he did, it was almost hard to watch. Before long Green had the thousand-yard stare going, as Kobe would eventually hang 48 points on him. And you don’t want to pile onto the kid, because it really wasn’t fair for P.J. Carlesimo to stick a rookie on Kobe Freakin’ Bryant and leave him on an island like that all night. As the game stretched into overtime, Kobe just kept turning the screws in, and after he single-handedly erased a Sonics’ lead in the extra frame, Mamba ended the slasher flick with a pull-up jumper with 4.3 seconds left that proved to be the game-winner. And on top of all that, Kobe attached himself to Kevin Durant’s hip in crunch-time, forcing one bad shot and then denying KD the ball on Seattle’s last possession … Stepping into Bynum’s place, Kwame Brown had a decent stat line with 10 points and 10 boards, but it didn’t look good for him at the outset. The Sonics had no fear of driving to the rack with Kwame standing there instead of Bynum, and the Lakers immediately started playing light-years better once Kwame sat down in the first half and Ronny Turiaf came in … Sonics’ color guy Snapper Jones on Kwame: “He has put on a lot of weight. He’s very smooth.” Translation: Kwame’s gotten fat and has no muscle definition. And that, Lakers fans, is your starting center for the next two months, unless Chris Webber or P.J. Brown jumps on board … Play of the game for the Sonics: Luke Ridnour went behind the back twice on a fast break, twisting Jordan Farmar around in the process, then hit Nick Collison (24 pts, 18 rebs) on the run, who banged it on Turiaf’s head … A Celtics’ fan who shall remain nameless (Fantasy Doctor) was talking pretty confidently in the office yesterday about how the C’s were going to demolish the Wizards as retribution for the loss over the weekend. Not exactly. In another game where Boston got nothing from players 4-through-12 on the roster — the non-KG/Pierce/Allen group scored a total of 26 points — they lost to the Wizards again, this time at home. Rajon Rondo was back in the lineup after missing the previous game against Washington, and while he didn’t turn the ball over once, a few buckets from him wouldn’t have hurt … E-mail from Cass right after Wizards/Celtics: “Another night, another 20-shot, zero-assist game for Antawn Jamison. He’s like the second coming of Yinka Dare.” Sounds like somebody owns somebody in fantasy basketball. One difference between Jamison and Yinka; Jamison gets 40 touches a game compared to about 5 for Yinka … Speaking of fantasy owners, be glad if you weren’t going up against someone who had Marcus Camby last night. MC put up 20 points, 23 boards, 6 blocks, 6 assists, AND he hit all of his free throws against the Bobcats. Denver didn’t get the win, though, as Gerald Wallace hung 40 points on ‘em and Carmelo Anthony (35 pts) made two crucial mistakes at the end — missing a potential game-tying free throw with 9.5 seconds left and then traveling after tracking down the offensive rebound … The Sixers were in great position to beat the Spurs until Manu Ginobili went off and hit three triples in the span of maybe a minute and a half. Next thing you know Philly was down nine and the game was a burrito, prompting San Antonio color guy Sean Elliott to say, “Can I say it now? It. Was only. A matter. Of time!” … A little bit after Manu’s barrage, a clearly frustrated Andre Iguodala — who’d been on the receiving end of the aforementioned barrage — got up in Manu’s face after getting fouled on a drive. Tim Duncan stepped up to defend Manu, and Elliott waited until after Iguodala missed the free throws to scream, “Take that!” … Amazing that Philly was able to hang with the NBA’s defending champions considering that at one point their lineup looked like this: Lou Williams, Thaddeus Young, Rodney Carney, Jason Smith and Calvin Booth. We could really see Kansas or Memphis or North Carolina giving that group a run … So much for Kevin Martin having to work his way back into Sacramento’s offense. After dropping 25 in his first game back from the groin injury, K-Mart II stuck the Mavs for 39 last night in an upset win. That’s 39 points off the bench, in only 27 minutes. Martin and Jason Terry were trading huge crunch-time buckets in the final seconds until John Salmons won it on a end-to-end drive and layup with two seconds left … How cool was the Kings’ announcer’s call on the game-winner? “Salmons…Salmons…Sal-MAAAAANS…JOHN SALMONS!!!” … Malik Allen led the Nets in scoring. Take a guess whether they won or lost … We’re out like Antawn’s assists …

Check out Bogut’s cram on Boozer in the Jazz/Bucks game highlights on NBA.com. Facial of 2008!
He also blocked a Jazz gimme and - Jason Kidd style - grabbed the board, ran the fast break and dished a behind-the-back bounce pass to Mo Williams for a corner 3PTM. A 245lb, 7-ft center, folks! I don’t know how that didn’t make any highlights packages, when a rather insipid reverse layup by Kobe was in NBA.com’s Top Ten. Sharp work, everyone involved.

Rip, then Ray, then JJ then Redd, not this year for Vince.
As it is out East, they need 5-6 guards so after Kidd, Wade, Billups -it’ll be between Rip, Ray and JJ
There’s no good forwards after Bosh, KG, Bron, Caron and Pierce soo maybe they can sneak in one more guard.
Say goodbye to the scoring lead, Lebron, cuz now that Kobe gotta carry the load for 2 months, he’ll be by you in 2 weeks.

I usually stay away from eastern conference basketball, but I caught parts of the Portland/New Jersey game, and just.. I don’t understand how the Nets have any fans at all. The quality of play was beyond depressing, but worst of all, nobody on New Jersey even showed signs of caring. Vince Carter’s legendary apathy towards the game of basketball is rivaled only by Greg Ostertag. They took so many rushed or ill-advised shots, and Lawrence Frank just sat there, no reaction.. how do people endure this? How is the chasm of quality between middle-of-the-pack eastern and western teams so huge in every facet of the game? I pity New Jersey fans so much. Come watch some real basketball out west, please, it will maybe restore your faith in the game. :\

It looks like the luster of, “Wait, I get to play with those guys!” is starting to wear off in Boston. They just look tired. The adrenaline of who they’re playing with is gone now. Now we see the true heart and soul of this (and really every) team over the next 50 games.
Rajon Rondo seemingly can drive to the whole almost at will, but only does it a few times in the first quarter (usually with good results) then backs off. There’ve been too many games he’ll have 6 or 8 after one and finish with ten. I know you don’t want to take shots away from the Big Three, but damn, you gotta take some! Perkins has been playing ok, but he’s a backup on this caliber of a team (in a related note, if PJ Brown signs with the Lakers, I’m going to the Garden and jumping Danny Ainge for not getting that done already.) They need a backup PG desperately (again, why not Randy Livingston? Sign him to a few 10 days, keep an open roster spot, and you still have all the flexibility you could have had, plus a guard off the bench that’s actually able to take the ball up, and keep the option open of a buyout guy if that happens anytime soon.) I’m terrified this team is good enough for Doc to keep his job, but Doc’s too terrible at his job for us to win a ring. It’s like going into every game down 10. You have the talent to make it up, but you can’t always overcome that kind of hole. As small as their window is, it’s now or never. One of the season ticket holders that sits near me says he asks, “Would we have won with Jerry Sloan?” after every loss, and has yet to answer no. Sounds about right…

good post celts fan-
the biggest quetion mark about this team after they started so hot was “would they be able to sustain their winning ways” with as many minutes as the 3 were playing and with as weak a bench as they have…losing for the celtics is good for the interim cause now Ainge and whoever else makes decisions can’t ignore the fact that you all need more pieces (a 7ft athletic big man wouldnt hurt, and i like the randy livingston suggestion..)
even with the two favorites in boston and detroit (cause we all know that detroit has a problem of playing down to their comp sometimes which can send them fishing this year like it did last year, and also the celtics are capable of losing a series to a team with talent that wants the each game bad enough…,)the east is really unpredictable and thats interesting…and maybe more frustrating than exciting.

I thought Tayshawn should be in his first allstar game this year, but he hasn.tt been balling latley so I give Caron Butler my vote as a sub.
Shaq should not be an allstar. Rasheed, Bogut, or Okafur shoyld be subs.

The Celtics bench has got to start behaving that they belong. The standing around and watching them other dudes has got to stop. Yeah they need another strong player off the bench (or two) but man, at least try to not dis themselves while on the court. Come out with attitude and swagger, prove you are a NBA player and not just decorations around the Big Three.
It is also time to break up the NJ trio. If it hasnt worked out for them up to this point, IT IS NOT GOING TO WORK. It doesnt matter what collection of bench they have. Trade your assets while the value is still relevantly high. Any value on that team have diminished since last year so this rebuilding is gonna sting a bit.

You’re right JZ Smooth. Only Eddie House (gunner who’s been mostly in control in close games), Big Baby (looks legit, but definitely will struggle to get a shot up consistently against bigger guys, though he’s got great body control, nice moves, and a “nose for the ball” aka he actually tries hard to rebound) and James Posey (been a starter, has a ring) have acted like they’re anything beyond background for the Big Three. Tony Allen tries, but he’s horribly miscast at the 1 and is iffy in some matchups at the 2, along w/ coming back from major knee surgery, that’s tough. Let’s get PJ Brown to put Perk on the bench and get a legit pg that can distribute to the backups and make it a little easier.
The thing is, it’s not like these guys are that good, they’re just what’s left after 2 superstar-producing trades. I think Gabe Pruitt’s got a nice future as a 1/2 combo guard that can score, but realistically, we can’t expect any real contributions from him this year (though tearing up the D-League in his limited time down there has been promising.)

I was pullin hard for KG but the way the teams in the west are playin right now and the Lake show are #1? How can u not give it to Kobe. Im glad u guys are thinkin about the East all star bench but lets get to the hard one, the west bench. Now just to move this along, Im not sure whose leadin the starter votes so lets just say the starters for the west will be Nash, Kobe, Melo, TD & Yao.(just for arguments sake) now my question is who is makin the bench? I was wonderin how you were gonna keep Bynum off but now he’s a scratch. I dont kno how to choose between all of those guards cause they all deserve to go. Roy, Paul, Baron, TP, Deron, AI, AND THE LIST HONESTLY GOES ON. luckily at forward its now as deep, but its still pretty damn deep. U got Melo, Matrix, Amare(i dont remember wat he’s listed as anymore) Steve Jack, Josh Howard’s production’s been down so his spot’s not guaranteed. Iunno how the NBA’s gonna do this cause the amount of players that should go that wont is gonna be unbelievable.

Wrote that yesterday!
What does Kobe do go and hit 48. Dude is about to be a real problem.
Caron is my new favorite player in the L. till T-Mac comes back. Not only does he hit the crucial shots, but then goes and D’s up like a mad man. It’s got to be the straws! I am glad he is doing well and getting his shine on.
For real I thought it would be another Bobcat to drop points on the Nuggs but how bout Gerald Wallace tossing in his 40. If he wasn’t so inconsistent his star could shine way more.
Poor Andre I. I know he has to miss Iverson throwing him the oops and just not having to carry the load. Try to get traded homey for real. Iguodala needs to go to the Rockets. Now that would be a nice squad of a healthy Tracy, Andre and Yao …I most def. can live with that.
All Imma say is run yo monkey @#$ up on Tim Duncan if you want to …and watch what’ll happen. LOL
Boston is fine and still the best team in the L. We all know it could have been any other team to lose to the Bullets twice lol. It just happens. Still in a 7 game series I would go with Boston, specially if they go and get Sam Cassell…It’s a wrap!
Wow C-Webb to the Lakers would be crazy considering the feud they used to have with the Lakers when he was a King. Now that was one of the best feuds ever. Lol Shaq was on his calling them the Sacaramento Queens thing lol. Classic.

What exactly was Carlesimo’s goal in having Green guard Kobe by himself all night? The only thing I can justify it with is that P.J. wants Jeff to get used to guarding the other team’s best player, but he’s still a rookie and you don’t have to leave him hanging out there against the best player in the world. The messed up part is that Jeff’s been playing well, too, and I’d hate to see this mess up his confidence. You could see his face on those last few shots Kobe hit, he was like rolling his eyes and cussing at himself. When Nick Collison missed that last shot, Jeff was on the bench (they’d put Wally in for offensive reasons) and had this blank look the entire time.
January 15th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
Celts Fan says:
Great question Austin. I think they’d definitely be better (not contender good, but playoff team anyway, and with Shaq and DWade, anything can happen.) Mo would’ve helped shoulder some of the scoring load and I think he’d have been a good fit. Grant would’ve helped in general, though I don’t know how much. Another scoring guard is exactly what they could’ve used earlier so that they wouldn’t be in this hole now. Unfortunately for everyone else, that makes a threesome of DWade, Shaq, and Beasley/Rose very possible, and that’s still terrifying, even if Shaq’s vert is almost down to negatives.
by the way, don’t know who did it, but thanks so much for getting rid of all the garbage comments that were plaguing this board all morning. great job guys…

Just some pre-spring cleaning, no problem.
Another thing to consider is that had Miami landed Hill and Mo, do they still make the Ricky Davis trade right before the season starts? I don’t wanna blame Ricky for what’s going on with that team, but he’s got some Marbury in him in that it seems every team he goes to gets worse.

GEE ...I am the 4th Don says:
Yea that is pretty amazing the way you all cleared the board. Wow technology is just the shiznit. Anyway I think Grant would have been a better fit just for his smarts as stated before all around skill. Mo would score but come on Mo be taking some wild shots sometime and gets into can’t nobody shoot but Mo mode often. Anyway naw the Ricky trade wouldn’t have went down if they got Hill and Mo.
January 15th, 2008 at 1:12 pm
Celts Fan says:
I don’t think they go out and get Ricky if they get Mo. I think he could do what Ricky does, only in the PG role. I think their biggest loss, which definitely flew under the radar, was losing Kapono (though the Raps overpaid by a lot.) They don’t have that spot-up shooter that teams like that need to stretch the D and give DWade and Shaq room to operate.

NJ Nets are terrible. Another bad 1st quarter at home. This happens continually in NJ. And it happens because:
* Players have lost faith in the coach/system OR
* Star players no longer want to be on the team
That is the true reality. Props to Portland. Blazers play cohesive. I wish they had Kevin Duckworth on their bench.

My backup center is Rasheed over Big Z but it’s close cuz Z is reboundin and hittin shots. Peeps keep sayin Bron ain’t got teammates, but ever since he been healthy, Z’s been a top ten center

Unfortunately, T-Mac’s gonna start cuz he wears that jersey they love in China. Yao’s automatic for his career but he actually deserves it this year. If him and T-Mac could actually play a season together, they might actually develop chemistry, but T-Mac’s already givin up…CP3 should be startin cuz the game is in N’Awlins, but it’ll be Kobe and T-Mac, unless he’s hurt…again.
Then carmelo and Tim. Amare’s listed as a 5 so he’ll be backin up Yao.This year, more than any other I remember, there’ll be about 10 dudes who deserve to go who won’t be there, just out west and elton brand ain’t even playin.
