As we told you in Smack today, Chris Andersen is about to find out if there are any NBA teams out there willing to take a chance on him. Today’s Denver Post has a full update on Andersen and his (potential) road back to the L.
I saw the guy over the summer in Las Vegas and he looked like he was in great shape. In fact, he looked like he’d been putting in some serious time in the weight room. While I agree that the Hornets probably shouldn’t do anything to alter any of the magic they have going on right now, why wouldn’t a bad team with nothing lose take a gamble on a 7-foot, freak athlete for the rest of the season? If it doesn’t work out you just cut ties at the end of the season and move on.
So here’s the question: Would you want your team to take a chance on The Birdman?

I think the suns should take a look. If he can run then he can maybe give sean marks a run for his roster spot. If brian skinner can get some pt as a foul machine/defender then perhaps…

Myrie says:
Hornets do not have a need for Anderson, so they might as well let him move on as a free agent.
IN THE WEST:
Phoenix is desperate for some size and frontline help. Golden State might also be interested. Even Don Nelson must know when the game slows down a bit in the playoffs, they will need some size in the in their to band against the bigs in the west. SanAn would be the best spot for Anderson; but I don’t know if the Spurs need him. A solid environment like the SanAn locker room would be good for him. Clippers should also take a long look at Anderson to play behind Kaman.
IN THE EAST:
Toronto. Sam Mitchell would no doubt keep his backside in line. Plus, they can play a fast paced style that suits Anderson. And they can use the body to go with Bosh and Humphries. He can be their 2008 Keon Clark….

Logan Light says:
Yep. Hello Bulls. I am a 7 footer that you don’t have to pay 60 million.
Hey Nets. Kidd can toss me an oop any day!
What’s up Boston? More depth on the bench?
Yo Seattle! Huh? The seasons a wash anyway?
What’s that Charlotte? Okafor is one laser light show away from going down for the season?
Obviously, he’ll get a shot. That’s what agents are for. What makes me upset is that he WILL get a spot, if for no other reason than he has the NBA experience. There are loads of hungry players that will give you the same thing just waiting for a call…

Logan -
there are definitely loads of hungry players out there, but very, very few who are almost 7-foot and as athletic as Andersen is. If anything, that’s why he’ll get a look.

Brown says:
s.bucketz,
I may be wrong but I think it was coke.
I think his likely destination is the Suns, like others have said. Outside of Amare and Brian Skinner, they literally have no size.
I would also say the Warriors (my team) could use him, but I’d rather see them give Wright and O’Bryant some tick before signing someone else (aka Chris Webber).
As for the Raptors (my other team), I don’t know if he’d give them any more than Humphries is already. They need someone with a mean streak who can rebound and block shots. From what I remember, Anderson is pretty much just a hustle player who can dunk (in-game). I don’t remember him being a force defensively.
He won’t be able to demand much money, so every team in the league could conceivably have a shot at him.

suns could def use him…what about the nuggets since nene comes and goes…Miami could use some front like help and let shaq and zo chill this season and heal.

Kobeef says:
I think the Hornets will sign him to prevent him from playing for one of their potential playoff opponents.
Sometimes it is addition by subraction that these teams aim for (sign a player so another team can’t)
His D and athleticism are not the stuff you want to see working against you in the playoffs ..and they can probably get him cheap.
s.bucketz - according to the NBA it was: a “drug of abuse” or one of the following - amphetamines (and their derivatives), cocaine, opiates, PCP or LSD

Ummmm….. Can Houston have him???

Brown says:
Houston would be a good spot for him, you’re right Gee. If any team needs some help at the 4, it’s the Rockets.

Celts Fan says:
if PJ Brown says no, Boston should absolutely make a run at him (assuming he is actually in shape and has kicked the habit.) At the very least, he’s a better backup 5 than Scot Pollard, and if he messes around, KG will crack his skull…
and I heard it was coke too

Andy Buckets says:
Yo,
I saw Birdman in Vegas in August (yeah, not the ideal place for a known cokehead. lol) and he looked like a beast. He was in great shape and is a legit 6′11. A bunch of teams could use this guy. If Boston was smart they snatch him up for peanuts. That helps if Garnett needs to miss a game (like he did recently). Andersen is athletic and is an energy guy.
