Jazz/Spurs last night might have been one of the best games of the year. As has been their way lately, San Antonio came out of the gate playing sloppily and dug themselves a sizable hole, but rallied to tie it up midway through the second quarter. Every time the Jazz made a run — which all seemed soul-crushing due to the raucous SLC crowd — the Spurs responded and stayed in it. The game was tight until the last minute, when Kyle Korver stuck the dagger with his only triple of the game … Even when his jumper isn’t falling, Korver has been playing like he grew up studying Jerry Sloan’s system. He’s not just getting open beyond the arc, but on cuts through the lane and in every other spot Sloan wants him to get the ball. Someone has been watching their “Scoring Without the Ball” DVDs … Maybe it was some time during the second half when Jazz play-by-play guy Craig Bolerjack figured out that San Antonio’s backup center isn’t named “Francisco Ellison.” And one time Bolerjack said that Manu’s shot was “soft as silk.” That’s different. Color guy Ron Boone’s lowlight: “I’ll tell ya one thing [Tim Duncan] does well: swim.” OK, thanks for that … Deron Williams (11 pts, 14 asts, 4 stls) split three defenders at full speed on one play, going behind the back to get past Robert Horry and maneuvering around Elson and Jacque Vaughn. But when Deron went up for a finger roll, Horry snuck up on him and spiked it … Utah built a 10-point lead in the first half on a run highlighted by a Deron and-one and a sick follow dunk from Andrei Kirilenko. With a big lead and the crowd going nuts, Sloan still had a look on his face like he’d eaten a week-old empanada … After Duncan (26 pts, 11 rebs) kind of had his way with Carlos Boozer in the first half, Sloan put Memo on TD in the second. But Duncan locked him in the chamber too, giving Memo buckets before putting him on the bench in foul trouble … And how about Kirilenko driving Ime Udoka to his breaking point and getting him kicked out? … Utah’s big second-half run included a crazy athletic layup and a sky-high tip dunk by Ronnie Brewer, and a steal/reverse dunk by AK-47. This Jazz team can run, play half-court basketball, play defense, shoot and they’re deep. Add the playoff experience they picked up last year, and it makes for a serious contender for a championship … In the meantime, are the Hornets the best team in the League? We’ll let you know our take when we drop the NBA Hit List power ranking later this morning. But there’s no doubt that N.O. is the League’s hottest team right now, winning their 9th game in a row last night over the Nuggets. Chris Paul (23 pts, 17 asts, 9 rebs) and crew were so dominant, you wondered if ‘Melo would have even made much of a difference had he played. The Hornets are clicking on all cylinders right now … The rout was so bad that even Marcus Vinicius got some burn. Wasn’t he supposed to be extra-nice when he got drafted, like one of those guys who could contribute immediately? … If you’re Anthony Carter, are you thinking of ways to avoid film session over the next few days? There was one play where Chris Paul put AC on ice skates out on the perimeter, then another where Julian Wright threw down an alley-oop with his junk pretty much on Carter’s shoulder … But Julian’s cram wasn’t as sick as J.R. Smith’s. He got UP on a one-hand banger over Jannero Pargo, taking a nasty spill in the process and where it looked like his shoulder was done for. Smith appeared to be OK, though … In another piecing, the Mavs got past the Grizzlies. Josh Howard scored 26 and Dirk had 20, and Jason Terry played a ton of minutes in Devin Harris‘ absence. If the Mavs don’t make a serious play for Jason Kidd (who as you’ve probably heard, wants out of N.J.), they could look at Damon Stoudamire or Gary Payton or Earl Boykins or somebody, unless they’re comfortable running with J.J. Barea … Gerald Wallace caught a pretty sick alley-oop from Ray Felton against the Clips, but Jeff McInnis didn’t have to scream for him. With no (shin) and no Corey Maggette (flu), we’re surprised L.A. even got near 90 points, let alone cracking triple-digits. Tim Thomas (29 pts) got buckets, though … NBA TV’s studio crew last night: Alaa Abdelnaby, Billy King and Andre Aldridge. Feel free to make your own jokes. During halftime of Spurs/Jazz, one of them broke out this heinous sound that was the highest-pitched laugh we’ve ever heard from a grown man … Despite playing without two of its best guards (suspended Jerome Dyson and Doug Wiggins), UConn carved up Louisville’s full-court press and eked out a win over the Cardinals. A.J. Price scored 20 for UConn, while Stanley Robinson had 16 and 10 boards. Earlier in the day we pitted the Huskies’ all-time best versus UL’s in a UConn vs. Louisville alumni game. Emeka Okafor vs. Wes Unseld; Rip Hamilton vs. Doctor Dunkenstein; Who gets the edge? … Chris Webber and Nellie back together? How long will this last? … We’re out like “expert” analysis from awful front-office executives …

Meet the anti-Mrs. Doug Christie, ladies and gentlemen.
In an interview with ESPN Magazine, Utah Jazz forward Andrei Kirilenko’s wife, former Russian “pop star” Masha Lopatova, says that she allots her husband one free groupie a year. Yep. To quote:
“What’s forbidden is always desirable. And athletes, particularly men, are susceptible to all the things they are offered,” Lopatova said. “It’s the same way raising children - If I tell my child, ‘No pizza, no pizza, no pizza,’ what does he want more than anything? Pizza.”
Thus, since there’s so much pizza available on the road in the NBA, she says as long as she knows about it, it’s OK. Kirilenko, for his part, knew nothing about the arrangement. “I’m not planning to do anything,” he said, before rushing out the door, removing his belt and yelling, “OK, Mormons … come get some

Brown says:
I for one think CP3 is the MVP of the league already. However, I’d be surprised if he got it. Too many people seem to have bought real estate on Kobe and LeBron’s nuts this year. CP3 isn’t glamourized like those two are.
Speaking of Hilton Armstrong, when NO drafted him and Cedric Simmons last year, I thought at least one of them would pan out to become a decent contributor, then they shipped Simmons to Cleveland for David Wesley. Armstrong was a pretty good player in college, so I wouldn’t give up on him yet.
I’m not sold on their depth yet, since they look thin at the 2, 4 and 5 spots. If they could pick up a decent SG and a big man (P.J. Brown maybe), then I’d say they have a chance at a chip. They’re close, I’m just not sure they’re quite there yet.
And it’s a shame that they have such a good team, but there’s nobody in the stands to watch them. Maybe moving back to New Orleans was a mistake. I’m not even sure that moving there in the first place was a good idea.
January 29th, 2008 at 8:42 am
Celts Fan says:
Kobe, I was never that big on Devin Harris.thought he’d be good, but not top 5 good. I didn’t understand why Jameer fell that draft and didn’t think Devin was that much better of a prospect (though that kind of athletic ability vs. a small PG will win out every time I guess)
CP3 probably won’t win MVP this year (I won’t say can’t, but it looks like the media really wants to give it to KG.) Seems like it’s KG’s to lose with the way the Celtics are playing. It’d take an injury or serious decline from the Celtics to sway the voters. I’m not being a homer, but the national media is basically annointing KG the savior of one of the league’s marquee franchises and they’ve jumped out to an amazing first half. If the Celtics continue like this, there’s no way KG doesn’t win it. For the record, I think CP3 should absolutely be in the discussion of the top 2, and if you asked me right now, I’d say it’s too close to call w/ KG and CP3 based on NO being #1 out West and the Celtics recent fall back to Earth:
1/1A: KG/CP3 (both have had such a HUGE impact on their teams. The 2nd half should shake this out, but if NO wins the west and the Celtics don’t finish with a huge lead in the East, it should be CP3, but I’d bet KG ends up winning it since he’s in a much bigger spotlight and the Hornets are kind of flying under the radar/CP3 is so young - not fair or something they can control, but it’s true so it should be pointed out…)

4. LeBron

its funny how everyone was on Wade’s nuts when Shaq was healthy drawing double teams and he could do what he wanted and they won a championship, now Shaq is hurt and his team SUCKS. yea Wade still putting up numbers just like Kobe was when Shaq left but everyone called Kobe a Gunner how come Wade is not called a Gunner now he going 1 on 3 every play…

This latest incarnation of what they call a uniform is hideous…Jim Calhoun should just forfeit their remaining games until the management team reverts back to the good old days.

I hate manu. The little punk perverts the game the way he plays. And just like Amar said, on basicly the last play of the game Harpring got the rebound and manu spun on his right foot and did a move that resembled someone getting on a large horse. It looked like he was either going for harprings junk or trying to mount him. But the fairy ended up kneeing him in the quad. What a douch bag!!! The dude is almost fully recovered from his last knee op and you pull that crap! You discrace the game. And all you spurs fans should really want a team that wins in an honorable way, and not the pathetic way that your team has won. You cannot tell me that the spurs have won with out playing dirty.

Springz, you might’ve had a point before Bynum and Ariza went down and they dropped from #1 in the West to #4 basically overnight. Had they won the West, you could make a case for him. Since they’re dropping and CP3’s team just took over #1, I’d say that drops him below Chris Paul (and KG who’ll be hanging around #1 all year so long as the Celtics keep winning and he stays healthy)

manu is like Bill Laimbeer, just a little shorter (and without the desire to smack someone upside the head). He plays hard, he annoys people to take them out of their game……if he was on your team you would have your ticket in line to be on his nutz.

Garnett’s MVP case is only made stronger by the fact that the media is is love with anything Boston-related, and that guys who move to new teams always have an advantage in MVP voting because you can point to a direct effect on the team’s record from the previous year. (Same thing with Coach of the Year.) Nash in Phoenix, Barkley in Phoenix, Shaq in Miami, Kidd in NJ, they all finished high in MVP voting in their first year with new teams.
January 29th, 2008 at 12:03 pm
Brown says:
Why do people act like the Suns and Warriors run in transition all game long. Have you ever watched them play? The Suns run a high pick-and-roll with Amare and Nash to get a switch on defense, which both players use to abuse the other team. Just watch their next game and count how many times they do this, and how many buckets they get out of it. As much as any team may want to run, most of the game is played in a half-court offense.
So for anyone who thinks C-Webb won’t be able to “keep up” with the rest of the team, just watch one of their games and you’ll see what their transition offense is all about. S-Jack pulls up for a three, Baron/Monta take it to the rim, Biedrins crashes the boards. Their half-court game is based on drives, cuts and kicking the ball out. Webber was brought in to help them in their half-court offense. Having a big man who can pass out of the high post to their cutters will be a huge bonus for them. Plus they’ll actually be able to run a pick-and-roll with an option to pass to the big man. In case you haven’t noticed, Biedrins has a horrible shot and gets the bulk of his points on put-backs and shots 2 feet from the rim. Having a big man who can knock down shots will add another dynamic to their half-court offense.

Look at Manu’s stats and tell me again how soft he is, watch him drive to the hole like a maniac and get absolutely murdered by the trees and then not say a word about it while he is knocking down all his free throws. You wish he was on your team “disgracing” the game. The man is a pure winner, and drawing charges is part of the game. It’s called being a cerebral player. Sometimes using your head is as good as putting your balls on display, which he also does constantly.
If you want to see a pathetic disgrace, watch Kirilenko’s flop when the Spurs were shooting free throws and Ime gave him a little shove on the back. I didn’t see Dime mention that at all. No wonder Udoka got pissed and thrown out for talking mad sh*t after that. After the man’s game AK had last night, he should not have resorted to acting like a straight pu$$y down the stretch.

And even if his team ended up 2nd or 3rd in the west, he still won’t win MVP. It’ll go to Garnett, Kobe, or Lebron. The media decides, and those three are getting 90% of the attention.

That’s right UncheckedAggression, and I had Brandon Roy as my #3 MVP a few weeks ago when the Blazers were like #3 in the West, and as soon as (if?) the Hornets fall off the top of the West, CP3 falls off the top of the MVP lists, but until then, RIGHT NOW, I’d put him as a close #1

Plain and simple, admitting manu is a bitch who flops, over exaggerates every foul, sometimes takes cheap shots etc..doesnt make you a manu hater. Just as quick as all the manu fans jump on his nuts, u cant ignore all the bad stuff he does too..sure he can score (with 2-3 other above average guys creatin space for him) but he also has his flaws.Thats like me wiht tmac, sure hes nice and i’m a fan but i’m also a basketball fan and HAVE to admit he gets hurt way too much.get off manus nuts, stop hypin EVERYTHING he does and stop makin it like the guy shits gold and does nothing wrong. game recognizes game for what it is
Who cares if the suns or warriors fast break all game or not, neither plays defense and once again the suns lose in the second round.
MVPs:
1:KG- simply because the timberwolves are the worst team ever without him and celts are suddenly beasts that mirror his game. one person transforming a team that much is crazy.
2: Lebron- hate him and his offense still consists of him just running over people in the lane BUT he does pretty much carry the team by himself.
3:Dwight- the magic go on cold streaks but dwights about to be only the second person to average 20-15 (wilt was the only other) and the magic are beatin good teams.
4:CP3- I already have him above nash as a pg and the hornets are blazin BUT their always one injury away from droppin out of the playoffs.
5:Kobe- ya hes doin him but we all kno the lakers are playing better mostly because other guys are coming into their own SO kobe doesnt have to do as much. nights he guns they still lose.
p.s: for the dude hatin on wade. Wade is gunning cuz he has to, he still does everying in his power to win games (30 points 8 rebounds 6 assists) but the simple fact no one on the team is worth a sack of leaves puts alot on him

What bron said
Where the hell did all the Wade haters come from? You got Wince Harder puttin up the quietest 20, 5, 4 in the history of the game and shootin fall away threes and then you got JKidd quittin on his team after a 9 game losing streak and askin for a trade instead of keepin shit behind closed doors. Now his trade value is down. All Wade is doin is playin hard, puttin up good numbers, playin thru injuries and still attackin the rim like he don’t know any better. Quit givin juice to Manu who can coast while Duncan and Parker wreck shop then he can come in against the other team’s 2nd liners and go off. I’m not sayin he can’t ball, but some people on here startin to sound like Sean Elliot. He’s good, he’s a winner, he plays hard AND he whines, he flops. It’s all real talk.
I’m just gonna remind everyone that there should be some weight on the fact that when we talkin MVPs, some dudes play out WEST and some dudes play out EAST. So when you givin props to dudes out east killin out east, remember that CP3 and obe doin it against a conference where Utah and Houston ain’t even in the playoff 8 right now.
One more reminder - 3 weeks ago, my Lakers went into N’Awlins, full strength and put it on em by 30. Nobody was talkin CP3 for mVP then and that was less than a month ago. It’s the west and teams will go up and down
so still…..Kobe Bryant - MVP

Mo says:
Yeah but don’t forget what CP3 did to the Lakers in L.A this season. He and Peja both setting franchise records. The Hornets had gotten lazy after 3-4 days off and the Lakers were still riding momentum from the night before against Memphis.

Mo says:
Kobe is about 4th on the MVP list right now. The main toss up RIGHT NOW is KG, CP3, Lebron and THEN Kobe.

GEE ...a.k.a. Mr. you know it's true a.k.a huh? a.k.a. I didn't even read your post.... says:
Bron I am with you on the homer ish.
I as you love T-Mac’s game like crazy, but dude is one sneeze that’s to hard away from being away for 2 -4 weeks lol.
Manu is good but he reminds me a lot of Andre I. although I would take Andre I. before Manu. They are just not players you would build a team around but they are excellent help.
I am gone get with you on your list too Bron for M.V.P.
I am thinking LeBron may swoop in and get that from K.G. though because he is on a team with pretty much no help at all and if he was to leave Clev. he would have the same impact as K.G.
Also Shaq’s offense has always been pretty much just overpowering people. I think you being hard on LeBron, dude may not be the best shooter but he does way more than just drive.
CP3 is doing his thing. I think it will be real interesting to watch him come playoff time. Everyone knows the playoffs are just a whole different type of animal.
Playoff pressure does some crazy things to dudes …ask Dirk lol.
I hope Webber does ok this year, cause if he doesn’t, I don’t think we will see a player get ripped harder from the media than he will. Macey gone have to deliver something

lol shaq is a center, hes supposed to over power people. lebron is a forward who runs down the court full speed and just trucks whoever is in the way. think about it, when was the last time anyone tried to block him or take a shot? they cant cuz hes pinballin through the lane..ya he hits SOME jump shots but hes still streaky and i still wouldnt say hes clutch although he has gotten better. I dont think hes a top 25 shooter in the league.

doc says:
fuck a top 25 shooter. He aint tryin to be Kyle Korver he’s Lebron James and if he’s 2nd on your MVP of the league he doin something right. If he bulls people over 90 percent he need to do that shit 100 because they cant stop it at all. You said it yourself they cant even block his fuckin shot.

gino-billy will destroy you — dude, a spurs fan talking sh*t about other teams’ flopping? man, your PG’s Husband came out and said that your team is full of floppers.
http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/2008/01/28/eva-longoria-admits-tony-parker-flops/
Udoka pushed Ak because he was getting it all over his face and in his eye all night long, AK didn’t flop, ‘Doka (a defensive specialist) was getting 23 points all over him with jumpers.
January 29th, 2008 at 8:51 pm
Ginobili will destroy you says:
I know that is some sh*t right there, how hypocritical of me! Yes I am a Spurs homer but a basketball fan overall. I get defensive about my man Gino tho, but yes I CAN admit he flops. And so does ANY smart player trying to draw a charge to change the momentum of a game, cuz like I said it can be the cerebral play. If you have position, you go for the charge - that simple son. Do you really think any of these 6′7″ to 7′0″ monsters would go down when they get bumped? Hell no, but they are trying to get the foul call and earn possession for their team, it’s called sacrifice. Manu also gets plenty of no-calls when he gets absolutely hammered in the lane, often getting hit in the face, which I am sure dudes love to see. Real talk, Amar.
Now as for AK…here is basically the same thing that happened yesterday:

Bron42 says:
Seriously: ummm if we were startin a team from scratch, alot of people would pick IGGY over manu for potential alone plus hes a better defender, rebounds, brings in more fans and way more athletic. Its already been proven and said, both are 2nd,3rd option type players and neither should be your #1 option on a team but IF i was starting a franchise i wouldnt take manu over iggy.
Manu will destroy you: Um theres been TONS of great defenders who didnt flop. taking a charge and flopping are two different things. fucking 11 foot yao flops. divac flopped. ac green and shane battier take charges. and he doesnt get alot of “no calls” he over exaggerates EVERY call, hes like #3 on the whiney face team. hes a 6′5 nash when it comes to actin like a freight train hit him each time someone breaths on him.
Doc: my point was, his offense is STILL weak. Hes got two moves and one is to literally just run down the lane. I never said he couldnt put up points but the shit is just ugly. Even with shaq, people used to complain “oh he has no moves hes just strong” and then they changed the rules so he couldnt just bully people. but with lebron their gonna let it happen cuz hes the golden child. lebron is like that old YMCA guy whose style is so funky but still lights people up and your like “how is this guy still scoring”. lebron will never be considered a deadly shooter.
