Damon to be a Spur

News came out yesterday that Danny Ainge didn’t really have any interest in Damon Stoudamire, stating that he didn’t want to upset the chemistry of his team. This morning’s Boston Globe says that Damon will sign with the Spurs

Once Damon Stoudamire clears waivers tomorrow morning, the veteran point guard is expected to sign with the Spurs, according to an NBA source. Spurs guard Tony Parker is out indefinitely with a bone spur in his left heel, according to ESPN.com. The NBA didn’t finalize Stoudamire’s buyout with the Grizzlies until yesterday morning, and he needs 48 hours to clear waivers. The Celtics have been on the lookout for a veteran point guard and had some interest in Stoudamire. Rumors persist that they have interest in Clippers veteran Sam Cassell, but they don’t seem to have the means to make a viable trade offer. Executive director of basketball operations Danny Ainge has said he wants to sign “the right veteran point guard” while adding, “We like our roster. We like who we are. We like the chemistry and the way our guys play together.”

For Ainge to basically not give Damon a thought, you have to think Danny thinks/knows he can do better. Like the above report says, maybe it’s Sam Cassell.

And in terms of San Antonio, do you think Damon is a good fit there?

    uhhm, no.

i thought mighty mouse wanted tick. once the french diddler (my girl swears he’s going to be interviewed by chris hanson soon) is healthy might mouse will only see the court about 10 minutes a night.

  3. Celts Fan says:

wow, if Sam Cassell doesn’t work out, Danny just kissed Executive of the Year goodbye…

and I think Damon’s a pretty good fit there. Anyone that can spot up and make shots off of TD and Manu is a good fit there. He would’ve looked good in green too, but Sam Cassell would be better. Now we just need to make that happen or we just screwed up badly.

  4. The Jed says:

Ainge is clearly talking about Jason Kidd.

Celts Fan - Joe D gets the life time executive of the year award. Sam is not good for the Celtics did you not see Rondo yesterday. Sam isn’t coming off the bench and they need to let Rondo develope.

Damon will only be a band-aid relief for the spurs so i gotta go wit boogie banger.

  6. Celts Fan says:

Youngfed, have you seen what else we have at point? Doc loves the 2pg lineups, and you can play Sam as a backup with the bench so you have some extra scoring punch off the bench, and then you play Sam in crunch time, either next to Rondo (obviously with a smaller lineup w/ Pierce at 4 and KG at the 5) or instead of him. Trust me, I LOVE Rondo, I think he’ll be a top 5 pg in the league within 3-5 years, but he’s not completely developed yet, and even if he was, there’s still absolutely NOTHING behind him on the bench.

I still wonder why the Darius Washington experiment early in the year didn’t work for the Spurs. He was doing aight as a backup, wasn’t he?

Damon can shoot from deep sure, but he doesn’t strike me as a Pop kinda point guard who would value the assist/TO ratio. Is Pop really going to live with Damon and Ginobili free-flowing on that 2nd unit? Is Damon still fast, anyway? seems like I haven’t seen him play in a minute…

  8. Brown says:

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m sick of seeing veterans sign with the Spurs. Stoudamire should have gone to a number of other teams:

    Cleveland
    Phoenix
    Boston
    Utah
    Denver
    Toronto

Seeing as the Spurs’ backup PG is Jacque Vaughn, I understand why Damon chose them, but I’m just sick of seeing it and was hoping he’d have the balls to go to a team that really needed him.

I don’t dislike the Spurs the way some people do, but now I’m hoping they get bounced in the playoffs.

  9. YOUNGFED says:

Cassell will only slow Rondo’s development Celt’s sorry to break it to you annnnddd Cassell ain’t coming off no bench. Damon would have been better.

    Brown

no doubt, another coattail rider signs with the Spurs hopin to get a benchside view when or if they win the championship. He can’t contribute shit to the Spurs. I agree with the Darius Washington question cuz I thought he was doin ok

    YoungFed
U need to stop livin in the past, homie.
Cassell ain’t stupid. He was preparin to back up Livingston before dude shredded his knee. If the Celts sign him, best believe he knows that he’s gettin maybe 15-20 minutes per cuz they gonna be savin him for when they really need him : the playoffs.
A guard like Rondo can pick Sam’s brain and learn how to play the game and how to run a team, no way he slows down his development

  11. GEE ...a.k.a. Mr. you know it's true a.k.a huh? a.k.a. I didn't even read your post.... says:

Plain and simple the Spurs are smart. They have proven they know how to pick them. If they are going after Damon then apparently they know something. Just like Don with Macey!

  12. Celts Fan says:

“A guard like Rondo can pick Sam’s brain and learn how to play the game and how to run a team, no way he slows down his development”

I was about to type that same thing myself KDizzle. It may take a small amount of minutes from him, but that’s it.

and to quote Red, “It’s not who starts, it’s who finishes,” and Sam would absolutely be in for crunch time. Don’t forget how tight Cassell and KG are too

  13. Fabian says:

how possible is a Ray Allen + whoever Jason Kidd swap with the Nets? hahaha that would be insane…

  14. Celts Fan says:

not possible. I’m sure JKidd remembers 20,000 Bostonians chanting, “Wifebeater” at him back in the ‘01 (I think) Playoffs. That’s one PG I know we’re not getting…

  15. GEE ...I got 4 on it and will hit you with the other 1 later! says:

LOL I remember that Celts. ESPN was making a big deal on it and all.

Honestly Boston doesn’t really even have to make a trade or anything. If we think, they really straight with what they have. Plus with the playoffs we are talking about a series of games against them. How many teams in the league gone beat them in a series…verrrrry few.

So Boston may not do anything by the deadline, and if they do that is just adding more to an already nice line-up. Cause outside of the big 3 they got them young boys hustling and trying hard at least.

I don’t expect Boston to make a move, and Kidd to go Orlando or Houston and Damon to the Spurs and I think Sam will stay put probably.

  16. Celts Fan says:

I’ve heard Sam just started working on a buyout in LA, what worries me is the speculation he’s going to Denver to be bread as the next coach a la Avery Johnson in Dallas.

I like what Boston has too, but we’d be kidding ourselves if we say there aren’t any holes. Our backup center is either Scot Pollard or an undersized PF (6′8″ Leon Powe or 6′ 8″ (wide) Big Baby) and the backup point is MIA. There are “veeeeery few” teams that can hang with them in a 7 game series (damn right GEE, and I got your other $1 if you want to share!), but if you sure up those holes, the C’s jump from the middle of the pack of the real TITLE contenders, right up to the top.

Let’s be selective, but you have to do something with those 2 open roster spots unless they’re drinking the Jonestown kool-aid on Scot Pollard and they’re really sold that Gabe Pruitt can contribute in meaningful minutes this year (I think he has a bright future, but anything we get from him this year is a bonus)

My take: go hard after PJ Brown and Sam Cassell
Worst case: throw a couple 10 days at Randy Livingston and a 5

  17. doc says:

Fuck Stoudimire he aint been shit since 2000 just cause he a vet dont mean he a good pickup. I think Pop got some if you 30 come get a ring welfare shit goin on. If it aint Sam “Look like a left nut” Cassell it aint worth it. That goes for you to Gary “Mitten” Payton.

  18. SAM I AM...I AM SAM says:

Obviously some people don’t understand basketball….or how to evaluate talent….

Damon Stoudamire is a good pick up for most teams, he will never be as good as his Toronto days..but he’ll give valuable minutes while TParker heals….he’s definitely an upgrade to what they have on the bench…

Why do you think SanAntonio is in the mix every year? Because of making smart basketball decisions….

I think Boston is waiting to see if Cassell is available….if Boston gets him…it’s over…they at least get in the Finals….without him…Rondo is too inexperienced to carry them all the way

JKidd….I think is a great fit in Dallas….

    GaryPayton…..just gone and retire

PJ Brown……….I don’t think he wants to play…

  19. doc says:

Sam I am dont know how. Stoudimire aint gonna be shit.

Suck! Sam is Sam! He’s a gamer! he knows how to win! Aren’t you thinking??? dumb!
