The Kidd Watch

This morning ESPN’s Marc Stein has the latest on the proposed Jason Kidd three-way deal that would end up with him back in Dallas, racking up dimes at an alarming rate.

Among the obstacles holding up the deal? The Mavs’ reluctance to give up Devin Harris (We’re always backers of seizing the opportunity to win right now. Is a legit shot at winning one, two, maybe even three championships worth gambling on giving away Harris? We think so.) and the Blazers’ reluctance at potentially giving up Travis Outlaw and Sergio Rodriguez.

Check out the full story HERE.

like everyone on ESPN said laughingly last night, the Blazers are giving up WAAAAAAY too much here and only getting Devin Harris back? There’s no way in hell this is happening…

  2. Kobe-08_24 says:

I thought that Devin Harris would become one of the league’s best combo guards. Doesn’t seem to be happening, but he does have raw talent in abundance.

  3. Myrie says:

Makes little sense for all teams.

Dallas has a 24yr old point guard with skills. Why trade him for Kidd who’s only got 3yrs left in him?

New Jersey gets Jerry Stackhouse, Channing Frye, Travis Outlaw and a bunch of other role players. Certainly they could get more for Kidd elsewhere.

And Portland would give up young talent to add yet another point guard?

Makes NO sense for any of these teams….

  4. Bust Jlaze says:

I’m glad this is losing steam; I’m hoping the Lakers wake up and make a real offer!

Supposedly the Nets offered the lakers Kidd for Odom, Vuiacic, and Farmar. Lakers said no, probably ’cause they wanna keep Farmar. So throw in Crittenton and Kwame in! Do SOMETHING!

Of course, as soon as Kidd joins the Lakers, he’ll step on Odom’s foot and bust his knee or something…

  5. Bust Jlaze says:

Oh wait, I just threw in Odom on that deal, so yeah. That wont happen. Lol

  6. Celts Fan says:

Myrie, as bad as it seems, that looks like the best they’re getting for Kidd unless LA ups their offer. Travis Outlaw is a nice piece, Channing Frye was untouchable in NY as recently as a year and a half ago (though he’s not as good as that, he’s worth grabbing seeing as how NJ doesn’t exactly have the deepest front court) and Stackhouse is good for now and his deal must be expiring soon (cap space.)

and it always makes sense for a contending team to go out and get a stud like JKidd (assuming you don’t give up one of your superstars to do it, thus making it a lateral move) to put them over the hump THIS YEAR, since you never know what can happen to a guy’s knee or something that can change everything in one play.

The problem is, Kidd’s pretty old, so no one’s going to give up their top-tier prospects for him, and it’s now public and known that he does want out, which will drive down offers even more. Factor in he’s limiting the options to contenders, and it’s a tough market to get even close to fair value back for him.

  7. Fabian says:

isn’t the Blazers recent success based on their great team chemistry???
and isn’t Travis Outlaw finally evolving into the player the blazers waited for him to be. so now that he finally kinda lives up to his potential they are going to deal him?

    i hope not.

  8. Myrie says:

The Nets won’t settle. Rod Thorn is stubborn. They will not just give Jason Kidd away. Kiki Vandewghe was just hired to their front office and he surely will not want his first public move to be scrutinized with a weak deal involving Kidd.

There is a rumor that has Kidd going to Sacto for Bibby and some other throw ins.

  9. Celts Fan says:

That doesn’t make sense either! Sacto isn’t a contender, and isn’t the point of dealing him to start the rebuilding?

  10. Clueless says:

What? The Nets got Johan Santana? for prospects? Sweet….I heard his lefty jumper is water

  11. Myrie says:

    Celtsfan–

I dunno. Sacto is only a few games under .500 and Reggie Theus has done a commendable job. I’m not sure I would make that trade if I’m the Kings. But…’tis just a meaningless rumor.

But them Maloof boys and Geoff Petrie are never satisfied and they always think the team should be better than what they really are.

…there is no law that says NJ must trade Kidd to a contender. In fact, if I were a front office GM and a player wanted out, I’d send his backside to one of the worst teams in the league. And then I’d call his @$$ to ask him how green is the grass over there?

New Jersey needs to get young skill players in return for Jason Kidd. They need to be able to put a winning product on the floor by the time they move to Brooklyn in 2/3yrs.

  12. doc says:

I might wrong but who says Kidd can take a team to the chip anymore. People get caught up with yesteryear sometimes. The team he’s on stinks and they got Vince and jeffereson. If I was Dallas I wouldnt give up Harris. And Portland better not.

  13. Bust Jlaze says:

    lol @ santana to Nets…

good point Myrie…Kobe’s the only one with the “no-trade” clause. Where JKidd wants to end up should be a non-issue with the Nets; do what you gotta do to get the right players back! How did the Mavs even end up in the running? Were the Nets really interested in Stack that much for rebuilding?

  14. Celts Fan says:

Ya, what Kidd wants is irrelevant TO THE NETS, but if you’re a team like the Bobcats or TWolves, after seeing him ask out of NJ for not contending, and you’re not a contender, why bother? He wouldn’t be happy and would be asking out before he ever got there.

Plus, to get a superstar, you typically have to give up young talent, expiring contracts, and draft picks. All of those 3 things are vitally important to a rebuilding team, so it’s not worth it to them to do that…

  15. GEE...What is Fandango? says:

Man I don’t want Kidd in Dallas but they honestly do have the guys to make the trade.

I think Dallas should keep what they have honestly. They are pretty straight and I just don’t see where Kidd is going to make that BIG of a difference.

Myrie I agee with your first thought, it’s a nonsense move for all involved.

    Kidd should go to Orlando.

  16. Brown says:

Gee, Kidd ain’t going to Orlando. They don’t have the prospects or the $15 million in contracts to send them. They’d basically be trading Kidd for Jameer Nelson and a bunch of smaller expiring (some) contracts, and Nelson doesn’t seem to be worth the extension he signed that kicks in next season. The Nets ain’t gonna trade Kidd for an overpaid, underachieving backup PG, some cap relief and low draft picks. Plus it would make Orlando, a team with little to no depth, even thinner.

  17. Brown says:

It’s been said already, but Portland would be crazy to trade Outlaw, Frye and Jack for Bass and Harris. Outlaw is having a breakout season, and they’d be crazy to give him away like that.

They can get a PG somewhere else.

  18. GEE...What is Fandango? says:

Brown Orlando does have the enough in contracts and players to get Kidd without having to deal the whole squad. Sure it would make them thinner, but what squad is it not going to thin out that is not trading their top star.
The Nets are not going to necessarily get a fair shake at this point regardless of who they get, but between players, future draft pick and cash they could make out nice this season and still have some good picks on down the road.

  19. dagwaller says:

    Clueless - hahaha.

There’s no way this will happen, just because of Portland. Didn’t they just get a new GM with a brain? Honestly, they’re giving up a few players who actually have roles on the team for…Devin Harris? I like the guy, but the guys he’s getting traded for are almost as good as he is, and younger. Plus the mentioned chemistry issues. Portland would need a big sweetener for this deal to go down. Maybe a draft pick? NJ’s, preferably, since it seems NJ is going to be set for a while with the guys they’re getting back (or rather, their contracts).

Dallas, though, should do this in a hearbeat. Like Dime said, why not go from being a right-in-the-middle-of-the-pack team to a favorite? The West is a superstar away from being won. No one is dominant, the Spurs seem weak…I just don’t know why you wouldn’t. The Pistons broke a lot of molds when they won it all, one of them being that they didn’t have a clear cut superstar on the team. Besides them, most teams to have won it all had a couple superstars, or maybe even 3. Anyone that can get JKidd should do so. The Lakers, short of trading Bynum, were fools last year.
