All-Star Reserves/Snubs
Quick reactions to the All-Star reserves, who were just named moments ago:
WESTERN CONFERENCE
Starters: Allen Iverson, Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan, Carmelo Anthony, Yao Ming.
Reserves:
Chris Paul — No-brainer, even if the game wasn’t in New Orleans. CP is knocking on some historic numbers this year; he could be the first-ever to record 20 ppg, 10 apg, 3 spg.
Steve Nash — Point guards make the ASG go ’round. Not to mention Nash’s squad has the best record in the West.
Dirk Nowitzki — No one’s really talking about Dirk, probably because they’re afraid to make a judgment on him before the first round of the playoffs. But he’s still putting up his customary numbers and leading the Mavs to one of the League’s top records.
Carlos Boozer — His numbers have been down in January, but he’s still hard to deny for a spot in the ASG.
Amare Stoudemire — 22 points and 9 boards a game, but he’s almost a questionable pick. (More on that later.)
Brandon Roy — The kid is official now.
David West — On the TNT broadcast, Kenny and Chuck couldn’t agree on whether this pick was a shocker or not. Kenny was surprised; Barkley said that if West hadn’t made it he would’ve been pissed. Of course, Barkley could just be a West fan because they kind of look/play alike.
EASTERN CONFERENCE
Starters: Jason Kidd, Dwyane Wade, LeBron James, Kevin Garnett, Dwight Howard.
Reserves:
Chauncey Billups — Right now he’s arguably the best point guard in the East. If J-Kidd gets traded to Dallas or another West team, Billups becomes The Man.
Rip Hamilton — You couldn’t really take Chauncey without Rip, or vice versa.
Caron Butler — If he’d been left off, the coaches would’ve lost a lot of credibility.
Paul Pierce — We figured it was either Ray or Pierce getting in, because the C’s couldn’t have just one player. The Truth got the nod.
Antawn Jamison — Kind of a surprise. The numbers are definitely there, but you could have chosen other guys over him.
Chris Bosh — Going in as a center. He’s been on a tear lately and his team is winning.
Joe Johnson — J.J. leaked the news earlier on Thursday, so we knew about this one. Like we said before, he’s deserving but had a number of guys right behind him who could’ve gone.
THE SNUBS
Josh Smith — No one would’ve been mad if J-Smoove had been picked over Jamison, or maybe even Pierce. He’s blocking more than three shots a night as a small forward, along with 18 points and 8 boards.
Ray Allen — Understandable, but he’s still scoring 18 a night and hit a few game-winners on the team with the best record. Who would you have taken him over?
Gerald Wallace — Maybe if his team was above .500 he’d have a better case.
Josh Howard — There will always be those who believe Josh, not Dirk, is Dallas’ most valuable player.
Marcus Camby — The biggest snub. Defense should count for something, and right now MC has out DPOY vote. We would have taken him over Amare.
Stephen Jackson — He’s having a great season for a good team, but it’s tough to argue for him over the guys that made it.
Baron Davis — Same as above.
Chris Kaman — Not enough wins.
Andrew Bynum — If he wasn’t hurt, do you think people would be making a case for him?
Shaq — No, he doesn’t deserve to be on the team. It’s just not going to feel like All-Star without Diesel there, though.
Michael Redd — He’s getting buckets (23 ppg) but his team isn’t winning.
Al Jefferson — Another stat monster with a losing record.
Tyson Chandler — Another close call. We wouldn’t have been mad to see him get the nod over Amare.
Hedo Turkoglu — Offensively, he’s probably Orlando’s MVP.
Manu Ginobili — Averaging 19.5 points a night and has been the best player on the floor for San Antonio at times.
Jose Calderon — The Raptors fans will be livid, because Calderon is putting up a crazy assist-to-turnover ratio and his team is winning.

there is no way camby is not an all star…camby is a beast!!

Camby and Calderon are the two biggest snubs in my opinion. Joe Johnson shouldn’t be there. I was also fairly surprised that West made it, although I’m happy he did…. i like his game.

Josh Smith shoulda been in there over Jamison.

jz_smoove says:
the camby man IS an all-star, no doubt about it, and so is baron, and calderon. and josh smith but hard to argue with JJ as well. jamison is questionable but would be the same scenario if chnadler was in and vice versa. i like gerald wallace in too, that sucks.
January 31st, 2008 at 8:24 pm
eyeused2b says:
I think Camby was a victim of the fan-love his teammates garnered. The #7 team in the West has two all-star starters. I think the coaches felt that it would have been too much to give them three all-stars given their record and ranking in the West. Should Camby be punished because of the fan’s choice? Arguably, no, but he’s not the only deserving guy that will be watching the game from the stands. I think Josh Howard deserved Dirk’s spot, and I would have taken Turkoglu over Joe Johnson.

Captain America says:
Camby should be playing annually. A defensive stud that gets no creds.

bxballer says:
Camby not on the team is just nuts, Baron is stuck at a loaded position, J Smooth I think should have made it. I sure hate to play whoever has the GS Warriors next.

Tom Toronto says:
Calderon is amazing, but I can see why he got snubbed. He didn’t start at the beginning of the season, and I can’t honestly put him above any of the guards that were selected. The teams can’t have like 30 guys on them. If numero ocho keeps it up, he’ll get his time.
What suprises me the most is that Camby didn’t get the nod. What is he averaging, 19 boards a game? Seriously, it’s 14 boards per, and 3.9 blocks. That’s SICK, four blocks a game? Plus NINE games with 20 or more boards. Personally I would take West off for Camby. I like 9-14-4 more than 19-9-1, but I guess West gets it since N’Orleans is killing it right now.

no boom dizzle is my biggest diappointment, the best player on a very good and exciting team. brandon roy has been killing it htis year for an overachieving squad so on the one hand i like that pick. but baron has better numbers and his team has a better record. not too mention, for me, all star should be for the play between asgs, in which time baron lead the warriors to a huge playoff upset
January 31st, 2008 at 10:05 pm
nick says:
i think eyeused2b is right on point about his teammates not intentionally screwing him over. cause there are 2 of them on the squad with the 7th seed in the west, there can’t be 3 on a team that low in the conference. camby in all honesty gets no love from most media outlets.

What is this!? says:
You know, I really don’t like the Baron Davis snub, but whatever….Brandon Roy is cool and all, but I would have much rather seen Baron there. I just think that just because someone is having a breakout season doesn’t mean that they deserve to be at the game above a guy that performs well every season. But thats just me. Maybe this will spark Baron to put on another show for the rest of the season to make the snub look even more unjustified.
And i’m laughing at everyone jumping on the CP3 “historic numbers” bandwagon. He’ll be the first to record 20 ppg 10 asst and 3 steals? Thats great! But are we just picking anything to make anyone “historic” these days?
Oh and “eyeused2be”, I agree about Camby. But you can’t argue the fact that Iverson’s 27 ppg and 7 assists shouldn’t start in an All-Star game or even be at the game period. Now Carmelo is cool, but considering that Iverson seems to be more of the leader of that team, i’m not so sure if Carmelo should be starting, he could easily be a reserve behind a guy like Dirk N. or even Carlos Boozer. I just sort of feel like while Melo does do his part, Camby deserves to be there a little bit more then him. It’s sort of unfortounate that a guy like Camby that puts in so much work doesn’t get recognized for it. I just think that the Denver fans were working overtime to make sure Melo got in because they felt he had been snubbed so much in the past, too bad they couldn’t do the same for Camby. I voted for him though.

What is this!? says:
I forgot about the East! Man, no Ray Allen? Thats messed up. You would think that all the hype that the NBA has been putting intothe Celtics “Big 3″ this year that they would have had him there with the other two to help represent…but I guess not.
And No SHAQ?!! Oh, nevermind….
January 31st, 2008 at 10:22 pm
kobeef says:
Have to agree and say Cambyman and Boomdizzle were robbed. Roy is good but he is not in Baron’s league yet.
West is a very confusing pick. Even tho his team is not winning as much GWallace is more deserving of that spot.
Jamison is also pretty surprising but I guess credit is due.
Sad about Shaq – am I correct that this is the first time in his career that he hasn’t made the all star team?
That has to be tough to swallow given everything he has been through this season.

Johnny says:
I wish the rosters were 9 man for All-Stars.
The Rookie-Sophomores game is always better to watch for that reason. All the guys are involved. No pity minutes. A continuous competitive flow for the entire game. The sense that they see each other as teammates.
February 1st, 2008 at 1:05 am
gdon says:
Totally agree with Johnny, especially with all this talk about EXPANDING the allstar roster. Make it 9 or 10, and you’ll have a decent game to watch. Plus, it’ll make AllStar status all the more valuable. We won’t have to have these Juan Howard/Stephen Jackon/David West/Tyson Chandler/etc outcries (whether for in or out), cause none of them would be in the dicussion if it were a 9man roster.
February 1st, 2008 at 1:31 am
Red says:
Hey kobeef, has anyone told you recently that D.West and G.Wallace play in different leagues? That would mean it would be a logical impossibility for Wallace to take West’s place.
West deserves the spot. People may say he benefits from Paul’s presence and the attention Paul gets, and this is true, but Paul also benefits from West. You don’t get assist numbers if the players you pass to miss their shots. West is a monster from mid-range and he can play beast in the paint from time to time as well. If he didn’t play next to rebound-hog Chandler, he’d be averaging a double-double.

jamesinva says:
wtf? yea b diddy is a great player but roy deserves the spot way more. portland was projected to be one of the worst teams in the league. roy may not be spectacular but he was definately deserving to be picked. just because a player has a break out year doesnt mean he deserves a spot on the all star team? is that all you base it on? look at the teams’ record. also if b diddy took out portland this year then fine, but nope sorry didnt happen. anyways im very happy to see brandon roy making the all star team.
josh smith got ROBBED. jamison? shouldnt be there over smith. also woulda picked gerald wallace over joe johnson
February 1st, 2008 at 4:12 am
K-Dizzle says:
ummm….golden state got the better record and baron got better numbers than roy.
Baron : 22ppg, 4.8rpg, 8.1apg, 2.5spg, 0.6bpg
Roy : 19.3ppg, 4.5rpg, 5.6apg, 0.9spg, 0.2bpg
better record and better numbers.
This is your big snub so no, roy didn’t deserve it WAY MORE

Austin — no problem. you wont get a chance to forget about him when he leads his team out of the first round again this season, but guys like melo and roy don’t. (and tmac, but that’s a given)

GEE...from post to post baby? says:
Amar – We will forget when the Jazz go out in the first round in an upset. T-Mac is going to shock the world lol.
Anyway I really feel for Camby he has been playing like a mad man and got jobbed. That is messed up.
Everthing else I am kinda cool with.
LOL The Last Don will be chillin on the sideline. Bout time.
B-Diddy should have made it too.
See this is why as I said yesterday they should have two All-Star games.
That rookie game sucks.

Alf says:
ALTERNATIVES THEN?
I don’t disagree with Dime’s Snub list above – all of them are worth snubs. But here’s a what-if scenario to ponder:
If any of the ASG starters or reserves goes down with an injury (or opts not to play), then who is next line from the snub list to replace them?
My immediate thoughts would be Camby, Jose, B-Diddy …anybody else?
February 1st, 2008 at 9:53 am
Alf says:
Just thinking then…what about Mo’ Williams and Andrew Bogut?
They kinda carried the Bucks while Redd was out for a few games.
If you mention Kamen in the snub list, Bogut is right on par with him #’s wise.

Mark says:
An all star game without Baron Davis is like a sunday without sprinkles…its good, but the best bit is missing! Ray Allen over Rip/Joe johnson any day of the week! how is Vince/RJ not even on the snubs list? both putting up good stats
February 1st, 2008 at 11:51 am
Myrie says:
Wow…
DIME didn’t even mention Deron Williams as a snub. Is that his 2nd snub in two days?
I bet you Avery Johnson voted for Baron Davis as a reserve. He better have after the way BDiddy carved up his team in the playoffs.
Hmmm….
Brandon Roy was selected as a reserve for the allstar game and as a participant in the Rooks/Soph game. Can he actually do both? Is that allowed?

Amar says:
lol, Tmac shock the world? how? announcing that he retired 5 seasons ago?
Jazz made the west finals last season, and their team is better this season. I fully expect them to win 4 playoff games at the very least.

MJAX says:
As long as the so called fans have control over the “starters” it will continue to be this way for life! And as long as we all keep crossin’ ova(pun intended) the fact that some players “kill” and their team is suspect with them helping their really good team win, this debate will never end. We are either going with individual stats or the stats and a productive team. As long as we do both, there will forever be a whole nutha’ All Star team chillin that weekend.
