Bench Yao?

IMAGE DESCRIPTIONHe would have helped last night (Photo. Marc Morrison)

Houston Chronicle writer Jonathan Feigen is torn up over how the Rockets let an upset slip through their fingers last night in Boston and this morning he’s searching for answers. He keeps coming back to how Yao Ming‘s presence (and time spent in the KG Chamber) was killing the Rockets. But is benching Yoa, especially when the squad is without T-Mac really the answer?

Check it out HERE.

trade yao and mike james for redd bogut and charlie v.

    get team china together!

  2. Myrie says:

Rockets are a mismatched bunch. Too many guards (that don’t fit the description of a point) and a weak frontline.

    Here’s what they need….

A genuine bruising power forward. Someone to add mucle and toughness to go alongside Yao. Kenyon Martin would be a good fit. Danny Fortson would be a better fit.

Get a decent point guard. I mean…Rafer Alson, Aaron Brooks, Luther Head, Mike James and Steve Francis are all good; but none of those players can run an offense, start a pressure defense or be a leader (on the court).

Surely they must know Larry Bird is looking to ship out Jamaal Tinsley from Indy. Houston needs to make the call to the Pacers and inquire about Jammal Tinsely.

Having a true point guard (or even just a better one) will relieve McGrady of his ball handling duties a bit.

Size. You have to like Chuck Hayes for playing power forward, but isn’t only 6’6? They need a bigger body in there. And at the center spot behind Yao. Deke only signed a 1yr deal and he’s going to retire after this season. Is Washington still trying to move Etan Thomas?

i agree, they don’t have an identity. no one is willing to get dirty. they’re too much of a finesse team, they need a pg who wants to run the ball down the other team’s throat and can hit a jumper with some consistency (Mike Bibby) and a pf who will make people pay for working over T-Mac and Yao. I don’t think they have anything other teams want outside of Bonzi – who most teams don’t want because of his attitude

  4. Captain America says:

KG had problems earlier trying to guard Dwight Howard. Yao had a problem guarding KG last night. The difference?

Howard is as mobile as KG and much stronger. Yao is not fleet afoot.

  5. dagwaller says:

Good calls, Myrie. When your PF is 6’6″, that’s the real problem.

  6. bron42 aka Global-4A-Reason says:

I truely dont appreciate writers stealing my theories but at least people are understanding the rockets arent winning shit if yao is supposed to carry them. Hes just not that kind of player.

  7. bron42 aka Global-4A-Reason says:

and not really dag, cuz marion is only 6’7 and he plays the PF…its all about how you use them. Its not chucks fault he has to guard guys alot bigger cuz they don’t want yao guarding them.

  8. QQ says:

No, dagwaller. When your PF is Chuck Hayes, that is the problem.

  9. bron42 aka Global-4A-Reason says:

lol they wasnt doin much better with jauwuan howard, stromile swift or the supposed bruiser scola is supposed to be. and their all over 6’8

  10. Prof. TX says:

If they were looking for someone who’s big/strong, defensive, and not exhausted at that point in the game, why not play Mutombo? They re-signed him for a year, he is headed for the hall of fame based on his defense, but he just sits on the bench watching the game.
Maybe Adelman can get some pointers from Rudy T. on how to use your centers when they’re actually good and not just Brad Miller or whomever else Adelman has worked with.

  11. Myrie says:

    Adleman should bring back Duckworth!!

  12. DOC says:

They should get a good PF and trade some of them guards.

  13. dagwaller says:

Ha, good call on the Chuck Hayes thing.

Actually, Bron, now that you mention it, the REAL problem is still that they’re paying max money for a guy that either doesn’t play cause he’s injured or cause he doesn’t care. I wonder how much more money they’d get for better role players with the million less they should pay T-Mac, considering he misses about 10 games a season.

Seriously, though, this is a joke. I wonder how the Celtics would’ve done if they DIDN’T have 2 of their 3 big men fould out of the game? I wonder how many of their 12 fouls were on Chuck Hayes. I’m going to go out on a limb and say that the majority of them were on Yao. Beyond that, KG is and HAS ALWAYS BEEN a mismatch for big men. Yup, Yao can’t defend a HOF POWER FORWARD, arguably one of the best to ever play. What a scrub. Bench him.

Beyond even THAT, how did the Rockets come back from TWENTY POINTS DOWN?! Again, going out on a limb here, but “hustle plays” from Chuck Hayes probably weren’t what did it.

Seriously, what a garbage theory. This guy is essentially saying that the Rockets don’t have the personnel to guard KG. No shit. So far, there are three teams in the League that DO. No wonder Jonathan Feigen isn’t a GM. His solution seems to be to…what? Invent a new player that can magically defend HOF players?
