What you need to know about what happened in college hoops last night…
* With the score knotted at 83-83, Tennessee’s Tyler Smith powered through his man on an up-and-over move to get the game-winning bucket. “At the end we tried to get Chris Lofton and Tyler Smith on the same side of the floor,” said Bruce Pearl. “Tyler Smith is one of the most productive players in college basketball. He’s been spending time in the gym working on his 3-point shots. At the end, he did what we wanted him to do, stick it up their noses. We made 12 3-pointers for 46 percent, which had a lot to do with our victory.”
* James Harden is on an absolute tear for Arizona State as the Sun Devils upset their in-state counterpart Arizona Wildcats, 64-59 in OT last night. The Sun Devils are 3-0 to start Pac-10 play, and Harden has scored 26, 24 and 20 in their three wins over Oregon, Oregon State and Arizona. Last night, 22 of his 26 points came after halftime.
“The one thing that’s great about James is he listens,” said Coach Herb Sendek. “If you share something with him, he tries to take it in and use it to his advantage. I love that quality that he has. He got off to a rough start. He’s able to turn it around, and think about sometimes how hard that is to do. He’s able to do that on a dime, and that just shows you a lot about his character.”
* Aside from Trevor Booker, Clemson looked like they were still hungover from their loss to North Carolina. Booker exploded for 32 points and 11 boards, but the Tigers couldn’t hold off the Charlotte 49ers. “I genuinely believe you can beat anyone on any given night,” said Coach Bobby Lutz. “That’s just college basketball. Get used to it. Anybody can literally beat anybody. I’m not saying we’re the best team but because we can shoot the three and hustle, we can beat some teams.” Leemire Goldwire led Charlotte with 21 and 10.
* Against their third Top 25 opponent of the season, Dayton stepped up and downed URI last night to advance to 13-1. Brian Roberts chipped in 23 points, as he’s now averaging just under 28 points per game against the Top 25. “We played tough, as did Rhode Island,” said Dayton coach Brian Gregory. “It was a heavyweight fight with two teams going back and forth. We were fortunate enough to make a couple more plays that were the difference in the game. I think its speaks volumes where our lead is at to have two teams of that caliber go out there and perform the way they did in a big game.”
