Baby Food
All those All-Stars on the court for Celtics/Pistons, and who was the difference-maker? Big Baby. He was HUGE (naturally) in the fourth, scoring 16 of his game-high 20 points in the quarter and coming up and coming up with clutch plays left and right to help the Celtics get their biggest win of the season. In the last two or three minutes of the game, Big Baby kept getting open under the basket and kept racking up and-one buckets. There was all that talk about Davis being undersized and overweight, but the kid is gonna be a player in the League, something in the mold of Zach Randolph and Al Jefferson at best, but more of a role player than a go-to guy. The turning point of the game happened with about a minute left: Paul Pierce missed a baseline fadeaway, but Big Baby got a monster offensive rebound, got it back to Pierce, and the ball eventually came back around to him for an and-one that put Boston up by four. After Chauncey Billups made a free throw after a play where Davis by all accounts should have drawn a charge (and after which Davis kicked his feet on the ground like a little kid having a temper tantrum), Pierce and Davis hooked up for another inside bucket to put the C’s up five with about 10 seconds left and effectively end it. After Detroit took a timeout and Big Baby took a seat, KG went over to him doing the Sam Cassell/Pedro Cerrano dance … Right before Pierce’s consecutive drive-and-dish plays to Big Baby, Tony Allen had turned the ball over on a big possession and then almost turned it over another time. C’s play-by-play man Mike Gorman: “Do you keep Tony in at point guard?” Tommy Heinsohn: “Absolutely. But I have Pierce bring the ball up.” … Great game between these two, just like last time. At the tip, Kendrick Perkins started off the game looking like an All-Star, scoring Boston’s first six points after Detroit kept leaving him open. But then it turned into the Jason Maxiell & Rasheed Wallace Variety Hour. Max got a couple of dunks and got KG into foul trouble, sending him to the bench five minutes into the first quarter. Then Rasheed lured James Posey into the Chamber of Unfathomable Sadness, giving him major buckets as the Pistons appeared to take a stranglehold on the game. Then KG came back in during the second quarter, and the C’s immediately improved while the bounces started going their way – one time Maxiell swatted a KG shot in the lane and the ball went right out to Ray Allen, who stuck a three. Detroit led by two at halftime … Second half, Ray got in foul trouble, but KG made some tough shots in the lane and held the defense together to keep it a back-and-forth game until Big baby went off. Pierce (19 pts, 9 rebs, 7 asts) also got the eye of the tiger during that stretch and going into the fourth – sometimes he hurt the team when he’d shoot it too early or when he didn’t have to shoot, or pick up a charge trying to do too much; other times Pierce stepped up and hit some huge buckets and made those passes to Davis … Two spots where Detroit lost it: When they failed to capitalize on that big first-half lead by taking some key guys out (Prince, Maxiell) and not keeping their foot on the gas, and in the last 3-4 minutes, when they missed some big shots they should have made. Rip Hamilton (18 pts, 8 asts) missed a mid-range jumper that’s usually a bunny for him, and Billups shocked the world when he missed two free throws in a row. The bricks came right after Gorman had just talked up how automatic Billups is from the line, sparking Heinsohn to yell, “You got your degree from Salem U! Witchcraft!” … Said by one of Portland’s announcers during Jazz/Blazers: “This is the fourth quarter! This is Travis Outlaw time!” Whoever would have thought we’d hear that call during an NBA game? And it just shows how much Outlaw has improved within the season even; it wasn’t long ago that every time we tuned into a Blazers game, one of the announcers was wondering out loud why Outlaw was playing … Outlaw was killing Utah in the fourth, but it was Martell Webster who shot Portland into the blowout win. Webster scored 24 points in the third quarter alone, carrying a team that didn’t have Brandon Roy (tailbone) in the second half … Safe to say that Utah wants no parts of Portland in a playoff series. The only game of the four that Utah won in their season series was in Salt Lake, and Nate McMillan wasn’t with the team that night due to a family funeral … The blowout got so bad that the crowd starting chanting for McMillan to put Josh McRoberts in. And how sad is it that McRoberts is already a mascot? … Like the Suns, the Hornets have enough shooters to throw enough shots at the rim that something’s bound to go in after a while. That’s what they did last night, struggling through the first half while Chris Paul (11-for-26 FGs) couldn’t make a shot, until Mo Pete and Peja (8 triples combined) started making it rain … So how does it work that Eddy Curry gets 6 boards in the same game where Zach Randolph pulls down 22? Eddy’s got a couple of inches on Zach, more weight (makes for positioning), and he’s got a teeny bit of athleticism versus zero for Zach. So it’s all gotta come down to some combo of instincts and heart, right? Either way, all those rebounds weren’t enough for New York to knock off the Rockets. Yao scored 30 to go with 8 boards, 6 dimes and 4 blocks … Another triple-double for Jason Kidd, but he almost messed around and got the bad quadruple-double: 10 points, 13 boards, 14 assists and 7 turnovers in a win over Atlanta … Did you see Richard Jefferson‘s dunk over Shelden Williams? That was just wrong …

Big Baby is better than Jason Maxiell even though I hate to say it. The Pistons lost a big one last night. I say cancel the Eastern conference playoffs and just have the Celtics and Pistons play best of 21 series (LOL).

Oh since Dime never mentions my Kings because they are terrible (through very little fault of their own, injuries and such) they keep on playing and losing all these close ass games. The last time they got blown out was when they played the Celtics, and even that game was pretty close. (down four headed into the 4th.) But they keep on blowing these games. I guarantee Bibby wouldn’t have traveled on the game winning play. Its mostly stupid ass passes and over-dribbling. For a youngish, not very talented team, they aren’t so bad.

YOUNGFED, go to NBA.com, they got all the highlights from last night.
Is it me, or did the Pistons look kinda stunned in the 4th quarter last night? They seemed kinda shook. Chauncey missed some free throws, and he also airballed a 3-pointer after they got a big offensive rebound in the last minute.
They also looked hesitant on defense. How do you have 3 guys around Big Baby and STILL allow Pierce to hit him with the same pass 3 TIMES IN A ROW right under the bucket? That’s just poor recognition on the Pistons’ part.
Simply put, the Celtics executed late in the 4th, while the Pistons lost their focus on both ends of the floor.
January 6th, 2008 at 10:01 am
YOUNGFED says:
Thanks Brown,
Yeah the Pistons kinda gave it to the Celtics but whats up with the Celts post game celebration like the won the Superbowl I thought they were gonna start throwing rice and poppin’ bottles (LOL). The Pistons did not act like that when they won I guess the game meant more to them than us.

Couple things –
Amazing game last night. Ugly at times, but for C’s fans (like me), tremendous win.
1. Tony Allen should never bring the ball over half court. Period.
2. Loved big baby’s game last night. Pierce needs some serious love also for continuing to find baby underneath (KG as well).
3. Stuckey and Maxiell are both going to be nasty. Maxiell’s a better nba player than big baby.
4. Loving this years pistons/c’s rivalry. Both such great energy games that all those people who’ve ditched the NBA need to see.

It’s true about Payton. I also liked the Travis Best idea. Honestly, not that the C’s need another small point guard on the defensive side but andre barrett would help them. So would randy livingston actually.

YOUNGFED says:
Yeah Stuckey is kinda nasty Jed and your right about Maxiell I’d like to see him start over Mcdyess but both are playing well and thanks Austin for the clip.
By the way since I got time to kill at work Garnett was trash and almost got whooped by Maxiell last nite he wouldn’t have acted like that if it was Sheed. Garnett better recognize he’s a lil light.
Also is it me or does every body seem scared of Sheed. Who’s the hardest most thugged-out in the NBA Sheed or Artest?

I say it works 80%+ of the time, the announcer’s curse as most call it. Whenever a player is on the stripe for a crucial free throw/s, and the analyst or color guy says something about their free throw stats and how good or great they are, then they miss. It’s been going on a long while and I have also seen it in other leagues, not just the NBA. It works almost all the time. Billups was no exception last night.

Frustrating game for a pistons fan. Second time where we were up by 10+ and then allowed it to be turned into a down-to-the-wire joint.
And let me say how much I HATE THE CELTICS ANNOUNCERS!!! Oh my GOD they’re so biased, which is kind of ok, but when they start complaining about calls against the Celtics, it kinda takes away from the game. And that was so stupid, “Absolutely. But I have Pierce bring the ball up and run the plays”. WOW. It woulda been funny if he wasn’t being COMPLETELY SERIOUS! I shoulda turned the game off right there.

Yea, not very classy. But that’s one of those games where it’s like losing to your brother – it pisses you off so bad that you can’t even put it into words without sounding like a jackass.

Eric says:
I think the Pistons fans (YOUNGFED) need to take a step back for a second. The Celtics are a new group as far as playing together and when you go into Detroit and win a game like that with that much hype after losing the first match-up in your own building you should be excited. Yes, the Pistons handle things differently but as a team they have been there before and that is the way they choose to do things.
Now as far as Garnett goes, do you really think he is afraid of anyone on the court including Sheed? Please, Please, Please…KG fears no one. When KG was on the court last night the Celtics were plus 23 over the Pistons, that’s plus 23. They also had a 26-0 advantage of points in the paint in the second half. Garnett, Perkins, Pollard and Davis obviously were not afraid of anyone in Detroit last night.
It feels good to have your team at 29-3…wow!
January 6th, 2008 at 1:57 pm
Bobby B says:
Dime, I think you need to conduct a poll and determine who the biggest homers are. I nominate Tommy Heinsohn. Unless you’re a huge Celtics fan, it’s almost enough to make you watch the game on mute. The only saving grace last night was that Heinsohn wasn’t teamed up with Cousy and his awful lisp. Heinsohn and Cousy are the worst announcing duo, bar none.
January 6th, 2008 at 2:04 pm
Eric says:
Tommy is no doubt a homer…he is also a hall of famer as a player and coach as a CELTIC. Tommy knows the game and is absolutely hilarious. Heinsohn and Gorman are the best team announcers in the league, there is no close second. Have you heard some of these announcers from other cities? Horrible. No humor, no insight, NOTHING. Cousy is another story but Tommy is pure entertainment and Gorman is as good as it gets as a play by play guy.

With the dough flyin around for scrubs, Earl should be able to get more than 3M/yr. Dude can get 15/4 at will and would be a good energy dude/change of pace point for teams like Cleveland(where he’s from), Clippers, Chicago, Indy, whoever. Every team in the league can use a back up point except for maybe Memphis, Orlando. I think he’s out more for length of contract tho cuz a 1 year player option when you 30/31 ain’t a good place to be.

He’s getting payed for his quicknes and energy… not for his shooting, and definitely not for his height and defense…
So how long of a contract are you williong to invest in a 31 year old MICRO PG (smaller than mighty mouse) who definitely relies his whole performance on quickness???

Side note: why did the refs call a T on Max but not Garnett for that little confrontation? Looked like a clean block too. As did the one later in the game from Sheed.
