Hoop Links, 2/1

* Avery Johnson isn’t about to upset the order of things to add Jason Kidd to the Mavs. “We’re not involved,” Johnson said. “Anybody has the right to throw out names and speculate, but we’re not involved. That’s all I can tell (the players). We’re not involved. We like our team, we’re moving forward with our team.”

* If Baron Davis wasn’t already steaming about being snubbed for the All-Star team, Don Nelson is doing his best to fuel Boom’s fire. “It’s a shame really,” Nelson said on his KNBR radio show. “For him not to make it is kind of a disgrace. I’m pretty disappointed with the coaches in the West.” Nelson also added, “There’s a lack of respect for the franchise.”

* Maybe Amare Stoudemire was feeling so good about his All-Star selection that missing the game-tying free throw with 8.7 to play didn’t really get to him. “I normally make those type of free throws,” Stoudemire said. “Just fell short tonight. No biggie.”

* Undoubtedly the lightest moment on the Cavs’ bench during last night’s loss to Seattle was when Donyell Marshall accidentally took off his jersey with his shooting shirt when he jumped off the bench to enter the game. “The mood was lightened on the Cavs’ bench in the first quarter, when Donyell Marshall, checking into a game for the first time since Nov. 2, accidently took off his uniform top with his warmup,” writes Brian Windhorst. “All the bench players were in stitches, especially James and Ilgauskas, who were laying on top of each other laughing.”

* After Tayshaun Prince knocked down a triple to put Detroit up 90-89 with 4.4 seconds to play, Lamar Odom airballed a 19-footer as time expired instead of forcing the ball to Kobe Bryant. “I kind of knew that was the look I was going to get,” Odom said. “I just shot it too fast. But I’m telling you, that’s the shot I would take 100 out of 100 times. I just rushed it a little bit. I kind of catapulted it.”

* Before that heroic three-pointer, Prince took over guarding Kobe from Arron Afflalo, who “did a terrific job” on Bryant. What ever happened to Tayshaun as a defensive stopper? “In the last few minutes, Bryant hit a jumper over Prince; nailed a three-pointer over Prince; lost Prince with his dribble and shot a pull-up jumper (which missed); and weaved through the defense, forcing at least 17 Pistons to collapse on him, which allowed Bryant to pass to a wide-open Ronny Turiaf under the basket,” writes Michael Rosenberg.

* The Celtics advanced to 13-0 against the Western Conference thanks to Rajon Rondo pilfering a rebound from under Dirk Nowitzki’s nose. “It was a well-fought game, and neither team gave the other team much,” Nowitzki said. “I had the rebound in my hand when it was a tie game, and Rondo came out of nowhere. I didn’t even see him, and he snuck it up to the basket before I could react.”

* Prepare yourself for disgusting! Ray Allen described the flu symptoms that have run through the NBA recently, saying that he slept through so much of Tuesday that he hardly remembers it. He also added, “I just kept throwing up. It was probably the most I had thrown up in my life.”

* While everyone seems to be getting “cold feet” in the Jason Kidd deal, Rod Thorn is trying to pluck Stromile Swift from the Grizzlies in exchange for Jason Collins. “The Grizzlies suspended Swift, 28, for Wednesday’s game and would rather trade him than let him return to their young, impressionable locker room,” writes Adrian Wojnarowski.

* Thanks to True Hoop, here’s every NBA player ranked according to how many wins they produce. Congratulations, Andrea Bargnani - you’re dead last!

* Could Davis’ All-Star snub be karma biting him back for quitting on the Hornets a few years back? “Davis quit on the Hornets three seasons ago,” writes Johnny Ludden. “He wanted out of New Orleans, he got his wish and now they’re not letting him come back for the All-Star game. Even more poetic: the player who possibly knocked Davis from the roster? Hard-working Hornets forward David West.”

* While the Cavs were toothless without LeBron in the lineup last night, the Sonics had to stave off a LeBron-esque 23-3 fourth quarter comeback. “The next time we have a 20-point lead, we’ll close out better,” P.J. Carlesimo said. “We had some really, really good minutes and some poor minutes. It’s relaxing a little bit having a big lead; it’s not staying aggressive. It’s settling for some bad shots and we have some bad turnovers.”

* If you have ESPN Insider, John Hollinger has an awesome (and head-spinning) calculation of which college players will translate best to the NBA. You won’t be surprised that Michael Beasley is number one, but Eric Gordon, Derrick Rose and O.J. Mayo aren’t anywhere to be found.

I saw Beasley play a couple times and can’t figure out who he plays like.

Tayshaun Price is an above average defender; but c’mon dude….it’s Kobe!

Baron Davis quit on the Hornets? Even if that is true, that was when the franchise was in Charlotte. I’m not quite sure what that has to do with the New Orleans side of things.

Lamar Odom has no business attempting game winning shots. Nuff said.

Stromile Swift is still in the league? What happened to this guy? I thought coming out of LSU he had potential to be a high flying dominant big. Like a young(er) Antonio McDyess. Shows you how much I know….

  3. doc says:

Beasly plays like Derrick Coleman when he was the shit.
