Dime U - Our Top 25, 2/5

It’s a sad day in college hoops with the General no longer scaring the bejeezus out of reporters, fans, and players in Lubbock, TX. Unfortunately for his son Pat, the Red Raiders weren’t going to be in our Top 25 and barring a remarkable streak, they won’t see a ranking anytime soon…

1. Memphis (20-0) - When Joey Dorsey grabs almost every rebound, the fast break comes easy and often. Dorsey pulled down 22 boards on the road at Houston, facilitating Chris Douglas-Roberts‘ 30 points and Robert Dozier’s 21.

2. UCLA (20-2) - They might not play the prettiest brand of basketball, but UCLA showed on national TV in an 82-60 win over Arizona just how good they are. “We were never in it,” said Kevin O’Neill. “I was disappointed we had no fight; they went after us from the beginning to the end.” Kevin Love tore through the ‘Cats for 26 points and 11 boards while his counterpart Jordan Hill had 8 points and 4 rebounds.

3. Duke (19-1) - The Blue Devils are 7-0 in conference play and remarkably haven’t really been challenged at all. Their average margin of victory is 15.6 points - part of which has stemmed from Greg Paulus‘ propensity to pull from downtown. The junior guard hit 5-8 attempts against NC State, and followed that up with 4-10 from deep against Miami. Will he let it fly against UNC tomorrow?!

4. Kansas (21-1) - The loss to K-State raised some questions about the Jayhawks’ frontline, a group that had previously been rock solid. Darnell Jackson only took two shots during his 30 minutes, while Darrell Arthur went 5-12 from the floor for 12 points. The Mike Beasley/Bill Walker duo outscored them 47-19.

5. North Carolina (21-1) - The Tar Heels turned the ball over 21 times against Florida State on Sunday - but Tyler Hansbrough did his best to compensate for their carelessness, pulling down 21 rebounds. Without Ty Lawson, who sprained his ankle four minutes into the game, Roy Williams will need senior guard Quentin Thomas to take care of the rock against Duke’s pressure.

6. Tennessee (19-2) - The Vols edged Mississippi State 76-71 in a game that was so hotly contested both teams compared it to the SEC championship. “This was a championship game,” JaJuan Smith said. “Both teams competed real hard and fought to the end. It was a nail-biter and we came out with a big one.”

7. Georgetown (18-2) - We noted the emergence of Jessie Sapp in last week’s edition. He has hit for double figures in his last five, thus providing JTIII with an important threat in the backcourt while Austin Freeman’s and Jonathan Wallace’s scoring numbers have dropped.

8. Stanford (18-3) - Brook Lopez and Lawrence Hill feasted on Washington St.’s bigs in Stanford’s win over Wazzu to the tune of a 36-14 advantage. It’s a real testament to the Cardinal’s strength up front that they were also able to limit Washington’s Jon Brockman (13 points) and Cal’s Ryan Anderson (11 points) in their two previous games.

9. Wisconsin (18-3) - The Badgers only needed seven players, six of whom played more than ten minutes, but still ran circles around Indiana’s guards. Bo Ryan forced the Hoosiers to rely exclusively on D.J. White to beat them, which worked perfectly. That’s not because White had a bad game - he had 22 points and 17 boards. It was because he knew that Eric Gordon wouldn’t be able to resist taking at least 13 shots, whether they’re good or bad. Gordon went 6-14 for 16 points

10. Notre Dame (16-4) - Seriously is there a better guard-forward scoring combo than Luke Harangody and Kyle McAlarney? Harangody’s last three games, he’s averaging 28.3 points and 12.6 rebounds.

11. Kansas State (15-5) - After Michael Beasley and Bill Walker sent the Little Apple into a frenzy against Kansas, they deserve this jump to the 11-spot. Backing up his guarantee to win “in Africa” with 25 points on 4-4 3FG, Beasley now has hundreds more fans ready to buy his Miami Heat jersey.

12. Butler (19-2) - Exactly one month after defeating Valparaiso 73-65, the Bulldogs will need to get another good game from Mike Green. He had 24 points and 8 boards the last time they faced off, and has been Butler’s most consistent performer with double-figures in his last 12 games.

13. Drake (20-1) - I don’t see how a team that wins 20 games before it loses two isn’t in the top 15. If you follow SportsCenter, you might think that this team’s MVP is Kyle Korver’s younger brother Klayton. But Josh Young is a more reliable scorer (16.1 ppg) and definitely a better shooter - 47.4% 3FG to 32.6% 3FG.

14. Purdue (17-5) - E’Twaun Moore narrowly missed being named Indiana’s Mr. Basketball to Eric Gordon in ‘06-07. He made a statement that he shouldn’t be overlooked for the All Big Ten Freshmen selection with 24 points on 10-12 shooting in the Boilermakers’ seventh straight conference win.

15. Connecticut (16-5) - The Huskies are the hottest team in the Big East, and perhaps the nation, with wins over Marquette, Louisville, Indiana and Pittsburgh. A.J. Price has paced that attack with 17 points and 5.6 assists per game over UConn’s five-game win streak.

16. Texas (17-4) - The Longhorns can’t deal with big teams. Texas A&M stomped them out 80-63. But smaller teams who struggle in the post get pushed around by Damion James, Gary Johnson and Connor Atchley. They combined for 43 points in a win over Baylor.

17. Michigan State (19-3) - Drew Neitzel can struggle mightily from time to time. And it seems that his backup Kalin Lucas offers the best option at point guard during those times. Neitzel shot 2-10 for 6 points while Lucas shot 7-13 for 18 points to go with 7 assists during the Spartans’ loss to Penn State 85-76. Should Izzo flip-flop these two from the starting lineup to the bench?

18. Washington State (17-4) - Free falling. The Cougs have dropped three of their last four, two of which came in Pullman for the first two times all season. It doesn’t get any easier for Wazzu - they draw UCLA and USC in their next two.

19. Xavier (18-4) - The Musketeers were having an off night from the floor against LaSalle - but found another way to get it done. They hit 22-29 attempts from the free throw line, eight of which came from Stanley Burrell.

20. Texas A&M (18-4) - The Aggies ended their three-game skid at Oklahoma State before outmuscling Texas. Their win over Oklahoma on Saturday showcased the stingy defense that got Mark Turgeon’s crew this far. Sensational OU freshman Blake Griffin only took five shots for 6 points in 38 minutes.

21. Florida (18-4) - Doesn’t it seem like this team hasn’t found its identity yet? One day they share the ball incredibly well, getting 26 assists on 29 fields goals with five scorers in double-figures en route to a twenty-piecing of Vanderbilt. Days later against Arkansas, they had 11 dimes on 22 buckets. Perhaps Billy Donovan passed too many secrets of the Gators’ program to John Pelphrey.

22. Indiana (18-3) - D.J. White is making a strong push to take the top spot from his teammate, Eric Gordon for the Big Ten Player of the Year award. His efficiency from the field (62% FG) enables Gordon to shoot at his heart’s delight.

23. Arkansas (16-5) - It’s been an interesting turnaround for the Razorbacks’ Sonny Weems. He didn’t break the 10-point plateau in four of Arkansas’ first eight games. Since then he’s let it fly, taking at least ten shots in every game, and upping his scoring with double-figures in each of his last eleven games as the Razorbacks topped both Florida and Mississippi State.

24. Pittsburgh (17-5) - DeJuan Blair is actually part human. Against 7-3 Hasheem Thabeet, Blair wasn’t as effective as he usually is, making only 5 of 14 attempts for 13 points. You’ve got to think that those 9 misses were instrumental in Pitt’s 60-53 loss. Blair still managed 13 boards.

25. Davidson (15-6) - After their wildly disappointing start, in which the Wildcats went 4-6 over their first ten games, Davidson has gone on to a perfect 13-0 record in the SoCon. Going into the season, Stephen Curry was being called the most underrated player in the nation so much that he became overrated. But their slow start enabled him to play the underdog again - he’s averaging 24.9 points during the Wildcats 13 conference wins.

Next Five: Saint Mary’s, Louisville, Rhode Island, Vanderbilt, Marquette

Finally! I been saying that teams shouldn’t be ranked higher than other teams simply because they have one fewer loss. It should be based on who is actually better.

Outside of the top 5, they don’t abide by this “fewest losses” rule for the best ranking. Nice!

    Dime,

I think your top 25 is pretty solid, but has a hollowness about it! Pat Mills (Freshman PG, St.Mary’s) is ballin’ atm! I am guessing these rankings were made pre-St. Mary’s V Gonzaga WCC game! Mills is a clutch performer (kid dropped the last 15 pts for the Gaels to get the George W.), this is the second time he has been on ESPN and put up dominant performances on each occasion (dropped 37 on Oregon!). This kid is lightning, has a legit J and can distribute! I think the Gaels will make some serious noise in the Dance this year!

I await your next round of power rankings!

    Clutch down the Stretch,

    Choc
