Shawn Marion just can’t catch a break, can he? (Ignore the fleet of white luxury cars and the fact that he bankrolls about $17 million per year and work with us.) After being largely underrated and underappreciated his entire career, The Matrix couldn’t even get his just due on the same night he was traded from the only franchise he’s ever known to the worst team in the League … But before we get into that, as you no doubt have heard by now, the trade became official last night: Marion and Marcus Banks to Miami, Shaq to Phoenix. We were all over it on the site yesterday — from the fantasy implications of the deal to some of the especially negative reactions to Steve Nash and Amare’s reaction to precisely what role Tim Duncan played in making this whole thing go down … Back to last night’s game. Hosting the Hornets, the Suns had Shaq in the arena but he didn’t suit up. The fans gave him a huge ovation, which didn’t contain any traces of sadness that Marion was gone and made you wonder how Shawn felt about it. Then the Suns and Hornets went out and played the Game of the Year for ‘07-08, with Grant Hill stepping in as if Matrix had never left and doing all the same things that made Marion so important. That had to burn Marion just a little … Hill’s stat line wasn’t eye-popping in the double-overtime loss (8 pts, 6 rebs, 4 asts), but he assumed Marion’s role pretty much seamlessly when it mattered: he came up with a crucial offensive rebound/assist near the end of the second OT, and was guarding Chris Paul in crunch time. CP had destroyed everyone in his path (42 pts, 9 asts, 8 stls) up until that point, but Grant kept him in check in the overtime periods and forced him to miss several shots … The game ended on a cold-as-ice long jumper by Peja Stojakovic (26 pts) in Amare’s eye at the buzzer. Before that, though, the extra frames belonged to Jannero Pargo and Leandro Barbosa of all people. Pargo (22 pts) hit two crucial buckets in the first overtime and made his free throws in the first and second OT when Phoenix had to foul. But the Hornets could never get a comfortable lead, because Barbosa (22 pts) and Nash (32 pts, 12 asts, 10 turnovers) kept knocking down shots from deep. After more Pargo free throws put N.O. up by three with 15 seconds left in the second OT, Amare (26 pts, 20 rebs, 4 blks) ended up bricking a panic three, but Hill chased down the rebound and kicked it to a wide-open Barbosa for the game-tying three that set up Peja’s shot … The Heat played the Pistons close in their first post-Shaq game, only losing by five on the road. Unlike the Suns, though, it’s not like Miami had to make an adjustment since Shaq had been sitting out anyway. D-Wade had 30 points and 12 dimes. Probably because ‘04-08 Shaq was rarely the M.D.E.-type we’d become accustomed to in L.A. and Orlando, we get the feeling not as many people will be fascinated with how D-Wade does without Shaq as people were when Penny and Kobe had to make it on their own … Nuggets/Jazz was also one of the more entertaining games we’ve seen in a minute. Also an overtime contest, it came down to Kyle Korver (27 pts) knocking down free throws in the final minute and Allen Iverson (34 pts, 10 asts) missing a jumper that could have won it the day after he dropped Portland with a game-winner … Deron Williams (29 pts, 11 asts) hit a huge three that tied it up in regulation, and the Nuggets got Carmelo (29 pts) a great look at the buzzer but he missed a wide-open jumper. That was before Matt Harpring started really getting under Carmelo’s skin, doing a bunch of little sketchy things that had ‘Melo about to snap. There was a good chance for a minute there that ‘Melo was gonna punch Harpring. (Insert your backpedal joke here) … Is the Lakers honeymoon over already? Two nights ago everything was Cloud-9 when Pau Gasol was beasting the Nets; on Wednesday the Lake Show lost to the Hawks. Still bothered by that dislocated pinky, Kobe shot 4-for-16 and finished with 11 points and committed a crucial turnover late in the fourth, but did hand out 10 assists. Gasol had 12 points and 7 boards … Big games for Atlanta’s Gonna-Be-Big Three: Al Horford was a monster, putting up 15 points and 20 boards, while Josh Smith had 17 points, 9 boards and 9 assists, and Joe Johnson scored 28 … No way the Celtics were gonna risk bringing KG back for a home game against the Clippers if they didn’t have to, and they handled business just fine without #5. Rajon Rondo had 24 points, 8 dimes and 4 steals. One of our Celtics fan Smack readers has said in the past that he thinks Rondo will someday be a Top-5 point guard in the League. We think Rondo is good right now and will be very good as he continues to grow. To hit Top-5 status in the post-Nash/Kidd/Billups era, he’d have to shine amongst a group that will include CP and Deron for sure, and maybe guys like Ray Felton, Kirk Hinrich, Devin Harris, Baron, Jose Calderon and Tony Parker. Not to mention Derrick Rose, O.J. Mayo and Brandon Jennings are names to look out for … A couple of triple-doubles: Earl Watson was KILLING Mike Bibby, putting up 23 points, 10 boards and 10 assists in a Sonics’ win, and Dirk Nowitzki hung 29-10-12 on the Bucks in a W … We’re out like L.A.’s Cloud-9 …

It’s called givin your coach options. The people rippin on this trade are the geniuses who “knew” that the Pats were gonna crack the Giants. Anyone who analyzes this trade before the playoffs needs to kick up the oat-bran in their diet cuz this was strictly a move made to get over the hump of the 2nd round. It’s not like Shaq’s gonna be playin 48 minutes or D’Antoni’s not smart enough to still go small if the game calls for it.If Diaw and GHill bring it on the o and the d like they did last night, the haters will suddenly get quiet.
Wait on some games to be actually played before you make judgements

I think Shaq will do very well with the Suns because you can’t double him now in the post w/ Amare down there to. I pick the Suns to win the West. And Aaron Paul is ten times better than Darko the Lakers will be just fine when K-Hova gets better.
Who do you guys think wins the West now.
Hornets
Jazz
Lakers
Suns
Dallas
Denver
Spurs

First of all Kobe was hurt. Second, Pau is still learning the offense. it will take a few weeks before the team gels.
I think the suns are gonna be worse on offense now because neither Shaq or Amare can play on the outside(i.e. Eddy Curry and Zach Randolph except better of course)and . They are both inside players getting a lot of their points on dunks. They don’t compliment each other very well.

While virtually (an understandably) most of the trade attention has gone to how Shaq will work with the Suns, I’ve seen very little analysis on how Marion and Banks will help the Heat. Lakers were playing back to back road games. They arrived in ATL at 4 AM. Did not play their best game and lost at the end. The ’show’ will go on. Anyone who thinks adding Gasol is a guaranteed chip doesn’t know hoops. Anyone who thinks he is the Spanish Darko knows even less. The Lakers have as much talent as anyone in the L. Give them time to mesh a little. They are in the midst of a crazy road schedule and are only a few games behind the Suns in the Pacific. If Bynum returns this year they are going to be playoff contenders, but as anyone should know nothing is guaranteed.

It didnt work with Marion, props to Kerr to have the balls to try another direction ,,, What was the last team with all the “run and gun beautiful style of play” that actually won something ? Yeah …

Celts Fan says:
I think Rondo can be top 5, and games like last night show you why. When he’s free to do his thing and not have to operate as the 4th option behind the big 3, he puts up really good numbers. Last night’s 24 (18 in the first half), 8, and 4, also had 4 or 5 boards, and at times in the first half, was dominating the game. He also has a good basketball IQ (there are at least 3 or 4 times a game you’ll see him dribble to right in front of a spot-up shooter, drop the ball off to him and just set a screen so the guy has a wide open look.) He has that nifty fake behind the back move that always fakes the hell out of guys and has been much more aggressive lately. You can see his confidence growing with each game and you can tell he’s putting in a lot of hard work on improving his shot. My exact words were something along the lines of “As long as he keeps working hard on improving his shot” that he can be a top 5 PG, but he’s shown he has the work ethic, and you can teach someone how to shoot better, you can’t teach that speed, nose for the ball, or willingness to do the dirty work and play that kind of defense. I really think the sky’s the limit for this kid. He does have to pass all those guys you mentioned (and Ricky Rubio if that kid’s as amazing as he’s supposed to be) but I think he has the ability to make it happen, now it’s just a matter of determination, and keeping the same drive he has in years 1 and 2, through years 7 and 8 and his first “real” contract…

Next Trade = Wally World + Luke Ridnour or Delonte to someone who cares.
After last night (and for a while now) it is pretty obvious that Earl Watson is the starting PG for the Sonics. They don’t need two back-up PG’s and want to free-up cap space.
The question is…who needs a shooter like Wally to get them over the top?
Last night’s loss to the Hawks is forgoveable - Kobe’s finger was pulled out of the socket and twisted sideways the night before…so yeah I think your shot would be off (4-16) a bit too if that was you.
The Diesel is making some pretty hefty claims. I am not convinced he can back them up anymore….But he is the MDE so we’ll see.

The Lakers were ice cold yesterday. Probably tired from back to back games plus Atlanta they are Giant Killers. They beat some pretty good teams. Shaq thinks they will win a championship in Phoenix I don’t think so. They are trying to compare him to Kareem with the showtime Lakers. The Suns are not the Showtime Lakers. Nash aint Magic, Shaq aint Kareem, and Stat aint Worthy. I think Miami will start to win some games. They lose alot of close games.

Shaq is the best center ever Smity313 the Suns will win the West don’t know about the Championship though. Stat and Worthy equal out and nobodies Magic but Nash is good enough. Nash will average 20 assist when Shaq arrives.

fisher will have his way with nash (defensively). no one can stop kobe when he wants the game and amare still gon have to guard somebody…will he recieve buckets from pau or will he get shown up by bynum?
will marion get his shine on now that the load is on him( and wade)…will marion’s athleticism help j-will’s career out a little?

The Lakers were tired from back-to-back, and Kobe’s shot was clearly off.
But Fish, Rad, and Sasha were on fire from 3-point land. Other than Kobe, the Lakers shot fine–except when Josh Smith was sending their shots back into the stands. Give the Hawks their due. It was a legit win.
Pau is a stud, but last night Horford (particularly) and J. Smith simply ate his lunch. And Joe Johnson rose to the occasion (like he always does against Kobe) and really played well. Live with it Lakers fans.

haven’t seen as much of Amir Johnson as we thought we would. Myrie says:
Is Dime calling Grant Hill a lockdown defender? Hmmm.
Chris Paul was manslaughtering Steve Nash. And then the Suns put Nash on Pargo. Pargo gave Nash the 2nd degree in OT. If the Suns wanna really strengthen their defense, they must address the PG position. Steve Nash is their weakest defender and it is showing too often in big games.
I like Carmelo, but I’m not so sure he can take Matt Harping in a streetbrawl. Harpring is a tough little f*cker and might body ‘Melo into some vacants.
Atlanta Hawks have a Big Three?
Does the latter part of this SMACK section mean that ‘Celtsfan’ got published? DIME didn’t mention his name (which is foul by the way….if your going to paraphase or quote a reader/poster, the least you can do is acknowledge their name and give them proper due. It’s like being #51 on the NBAs top 50 list). Afterall, we all know it was ‘Celtsfan’ who originated the claim of Rajon Rando being a top5 PG in a few years. I will let other posters decide it in full if it means he’s published and official; but you have my respect Celtsfan for making it.

haha thanks Myrie. I’ve been mentioned by name before in Smack, and as cool as it kind of is, I just say what I think and like to hear what other fans around the world think. Sometimes we agree, sometimes we don’t, and others I’m hating just to hate (goddamn Giants!) but (in a completely self-important, jackass voice), “I’m not in the blog game for the shout-outs.” hahaha
on to business:
Youngfed - that’s not a knock on Amir at all. If anything, I liked the kid a lot last year and thought he was ready to assume a larger role (like Maxiel) but it’s just taken a few months longer than I figured I guess. I thought (and still do) that they’d (he and Maxiel) inject some youth and athleticism into that team that’s pretty scary to the rest of the NBA.
to repost something from the original Rajon Rondo love-fest, here’s what I wrote supporting my case…
“Projecting out to the 2012-’13 season, I see the top 5 PGs in no particular order as:
CP3, Deron, Rondo, Derrick Rose, and Mike Conley (though you can make a case for Heinrich and Calderon - who’ll be 31 at the time and isn’t exactly an elite athlete or defender right now at 26) ”
Let’s add in Ricky Rubio and Brandon Jennings and it’s still top 9 at worst (again, ASSUMING HE KEEPS DEVELOPING AND WORKING HARD, etc, I’m by no means saying he’s even close to this yet or that he’s even close to a finished product - and if he is, he’s not cracking top 5!)
to address some other names brought up earlier:
Brandon Roy is amazing, but he’s a 2
Gil is good, but not a pure point. It’s tough to quantify guys like that, but until he starts playing better D, he’s tough to rank higher when he’s coming off a knee injury and his team is almost as good without him. If he comes back ok and they win more than just a few playoff games, let’s put him on the list (remember, we’re projecting out 5 years, so injuries matter)
Tony Parker - I feel like Rondo’s exactly like Tony Parker was on offense when he was a rook (came in a terrible shooter with great speed, worked hard and developed it, lightning quick, etc., and funny enough, but Rondo’s been working on the teardrop too!) but can’t hold a candle to him defensively, so I’d give the nod to Rajon when we project out 5 years.
I find it funny guys keep falling for the behind the back move too, but it freezes guys up just long enough that he can use that speed to get the inch he needs to get by them and get his shot up…

The Suns don’t have a real backup PG. Barbosa is a SG and D.J. Strawberry is a SG - and it’s not like D’Antoni ever plays Strawberry anyway. Banks was a PG, but he’s gone, so now Nash is all they have. So, yeah, they do need to address that situation unless they’re gonna have Grant Hill run point when Nash is on the bench.

Ian, that’s not what I was saying (though I think that Rondo will be better than him, yes, and I wouldn’t do that trade myself since Rondo’s D and rebounding - things we need from him more than offense - are already much better than Parker’s and his offense is coming along, but that’s just me. Rondo’s a better fit here) IF Rondo develops like he has the potential too AND keeps working hard, then I think he will be better (as in, in the future, down the road, not right now, just think he’s a better fit and Parkers a perfect fit there.)
and doc, how is it that Rondo’s a joke w/out those guys like TP doesn’t have Manu and TD to work with? NO PG IS ANYTHING WITHOUT GUYS AROUND THEM, I just personally love the combo of Rondo’s all around game and athleticism, along with what looks like a great work ethic and a willingness to do the dirty work.
Remember, I said I was projecting out to the 2012-13 season, five years down the road. It’s an inexact science.
We’ll have to agree to disagree, and sorry everyone else, didn’t mean to bring this back up again. We can keep saying the same crap back and forth, but we can’t prove anything until 5 years from now when we can say that I was either smoking some good shit or that I was right, so let’s call it a day on this discussion for a few years, no?

those are the types of answers i like
its an opinion thing
not real dumb one like
rondo is better than parker because last year he had one less turn over or something like that
myrie
if u switch nash for lets say ason kidd the suns lose in regulation
nash made the clutch three and paul can do that shit to anyone
or don u remember that the suns were an 8th seed team before nash
so lets be clear the solution for the suns is getting rid of nash?

Amir isn’t a SF, he is a power forward….he backs up Sheed and Dyess. And they brought him along slow because he rolled his ankle last week of preseason in practice and is just now comfortable in practice and gettting his tick…he’s gonna be something special.
Pistons are the deepest team in the league…Stuckey, Afflalo, Johnson, Maxiell, Hayes, Herrmann, and Brezec on the bench….. oh yeah, Flip Murray and Lindsay Hunter dont even dress. Stuckey and Afflalo are getting good quick. Herrmann could be sixth man on most teams…he doesn’t even play for us. I hope the Pistons keep him though….
