1-on-1 Tournament: Round 1 (Atlantic)
Everyone has their ideas about how to liven up NBA All-Star Saturday Night. One suggestion that we’ve heard from more than a few people over the years — including some of us in the Dime office — is a 1-on-1 tournament. Let’s take it a little further, though; a League-wide tournament of straight 1-on-1: make it-take it, game to 11. We’ll break it down by division to begin. First up, the Atlantic. Vote in the comments section to determine the first-round winners:
Kevin Garnett vs. Eddy Curry
Jose Calderon vs. Zach Randolph
Ray Allen vs. Rajon Rondo
Vince Carter vs. Andre Miller
Richard Jefferson vs. Stephon Marbury
Paul Pierce vs. David Lee
Jamal Crawford vs. Andre Iguodala
Chris Bosh vs. Devin Harris

Some of these matchups seem kinda weird… Wouldn’t you want to have guys of the same (or similar) position playing each other? PGs vs. PFs??
February 25th, 2008 at 10:39 am
Big V says:
KG over Curry since Curry plays zero D.
Z-Bo over Calderon. Z’s too big to be stopped.
Allen over Rondo pretty much any way he wants.
Carter over Miller via size advantage.
RJ over Steph (same as above)
Pierce over Lee (Pierce has got too much offense and D-Lee’s post game and back to the basket game has got a ways to go before he can put it on P-Dub)
Crawford over AI2 (this is the closest one in my opinion but I think if Crawford gets hot, he’ll be cracking Andre’s ankles and raising up over him for the long ball)
Bosh murders Harris. He simply cant be stopped.
I’d like to see more positional matchups than what you guys have come up with here. I mean who wants to see a PF go at a PG?
February 25th, 2008 at 10:41 am
Kobeef says:
That format is kind of weird.
I don’t think Big guys like Z-bo should match up against PG’s cause they would get killed in 1 vs 1. Big guys are great to have on your team but their game does not work in this format. 1 vs 1 is more like streetball than the NBA which is about team play..which is why most streetball “legends” can’t make an NBA team.

Austin Burton says:
There was a seeding system. KG is a #1 seed vs Curry #16, and so forth. That determined the matchups.
February 25th, 2008 at 10:45 am
Big V says:
It would probably make more sense to seed based on position instead of division. Just my two cents….
February 25th, 2008 at 10:47 am
Austin Burton says:
The big guys couldn’t go through an entire tournament and avoid the little guys anyway, and vice versa. Just like Battlegrounds — play whoever’s in front of you.

K-Dizzle says:
sorry austin, these matchups are crazy. If a guard is hittin outside shots and the post players are beastin inside, then it depends on format. Is it possession after 3 or is it defense gets it after a score?
One on one is a guard’s game or more suited to versatile dudes with handles rather than low-post dudes.
Kevin Garnett vs. Eddy Curry - KG - don’t waste my time
Jose Calderon vs. Zach Randolph - Jose, nuthin but crossovers and jumpers, 20 and 10 don’t mean nuthin 1on1
Ray Allen vs. Rajon Rondo - Shuttlesworth
Vince Carter vs. Andre Miller - toss up, Dre hits VC hard one time and it’ll be nuthin but jumpers
Richard Jefferson vs. Stephon Marbury - steph could actually compete here. One thing dude can do is break fools down one on one, unfortunately, reality’s a teamgame
Paul Pierce vs. David Lee - anyways….
Jamal Crawford vs. Andre Iguodala - JC’s a one on one machine
Chris Bosh vs. Devin Harris - CB4 got enough handle to get it done
February 25th, 2008 at 11:18 am
Kobeef says:
Like K-Dizzle days, reality is a team game.
Tim Duncan would get his butt kicked by the likes of Devin Harris and Iverson….but there is little doubt that Duncan is probably the only untradeable player in the NBA (maybe Lebron also) because he changes the game.
So basically, in the current format this tournament proves nothing. Maybe if you made it backcourt vs frountcourt players it would make some sense cause then you could see who is the best head to head players in each part of the game…but otherwise I don’t think players would go for it.
February 25th, 2008 at 11:24 am
Nick Barnes says:
Shut up and vote…
KG over Eddy (easy)
Calderon over Z-bo (just don’t let Zach get the ball)
Ray over Rajon (jumpers all day)
VC over ‘Dre (vertical vs. no vertical)
Starbury over RJ (Steph kills in 1-on-1)
Pierce over Lee (D-Lee has no offense)
Iguodala over JC (Iggy’s a lil too strong)
Bosh over Harris (Harris is quicker but had no jumper. He misses a J, Bosh gets the rebound and it’ll be 11-0 before you know.)

JA says:
It’s true, in a big vs guard game it really depends on who starts with it sometimes.
KG, Caldeezy, RayRay, Dre (so underrated), R-Jeff, PP (but it would be closer than you’d think), Jamal, Bosh (but if fouls put you at the line, maybe a health Devin Harris).
February 25th, 2008 at 11:27 am
Big V says:
I don’t think “avoiding” is the right word here. They shouldn’t even be competing against each other. The guy who posted earlier about this is correct, the format will dictate everything in these kind of matchups. Neither has the ability to stop the other, by and large. I’d like to see matchups like Deron v CP3, Kobe vs. T-Mac, Bynum vs. Curry, ok maybe not Bynum vs. Curry but you get the picture…..

Bring in AND 1 for what? Halftime entertainment? Those dudes have no business on the floor with regular NBA guys, let alone the All-Stars.

Couldn’t have said it better BV who cares about these match-ups put the best up in there not the best vs scrubbs. Fuking KG vs Eddie Curry stop it please. Nobody is going to watch this. If you aren’t going to put the T-mac against Kobe or Lebron or even his counsin why do it.
I refuese to vote on this wack azz list.
February 25th, 2008 at 12:10 pm
GEE... be clear says:
Shooooot Yea bring them in for Halftime. They would be more entertaining than the game this year. I would rather see And 1 vs. NBA than a 1 on 1 NBA deal. Plust that is something that just would never happen. That is like when Shaq got dominated by Hakeem and then went talking about he challenges Hakeem 1 on 1 on ppv. Crazy.
1 on 1 would be pretty wack, couldn’t happen and the winner still wouldn’t neccesarily be the clear cut best of the NBA.
I am with Big Al bring in the And 1 who cares if they get blown out it will be much more exciting.

nick says:
problem with this format is ya need to know if 3’s are worth more in this type of format. if they aint a big would this hands down, don’t what small is guarding them or who they have to guard cause they will just post up everytime and the guard is not getting to the rim.
February 25th, 2008 at 1:14 pm
YOUNGFED says:
I saw that K-Dizzle I’m just saying expand it and keep it real. Why limit a good idea to just the atlantic forget division put the best gaurds, fwr, and centers out there and make it an elimination style and if the last to standing happen to be a pt. guard v. a center so be it.
February 25th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
YOUNGFED says:
Oh I and I forgot they should let the fans vote for who they wanna see playing not some panzy azz seeding systems.
February 25th, 2008 at 1:23 pm
Coldchain says:
Damn, some of you sound like you’ve never played 1 on 1 before. It’s no rule that big guys always beat little guys, or vice versa. Mike Campbell is 6-4 and won the first Nike Battlegrounds in NYC, beating big guys and little guys.
February 25th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
Big V says:
Coldchain, nobody says that either the big guys or the little guys are going to come out on top. What I mean is that there’s no real criteria you can use to say one would beat the other, so in my opinion, all of us voting to say that one guy beats the other are really not based on anything. On the contrary, I could say with some conviction that Chauncey beats Nash because of X Y and Z. I just think that the variables in a PG vs a PF are too much for us to baselessly speculate on.
February 25th, 2008 at 4:26 pm
GayforRudy says:
Big V,
Just do what Austin Burton did and vote for the higher seeds. After all he decided the seeding so why shouldn’t his higher seeds win? I mean think about it… Devin Harris is a higher seed than AI2. Makes sense right?
And Nick, you’re retarded! How ’bout you try an makes you comment understandable?

Kevin Garnett vs. Eddy Curry - KG….Curry would only get one shot opportunity, since he cant rebound!
Jose Calderon vs. Zach Randolph - WOW, great matchup, NOT…Jose will blow by Zach
Ray Allen vs. Rajon Rondo - Jesus Shuttlesworth takes it
Vince Carter vs. Andre Miller - VC over Dre
Richard Jefferson vs. Stephon Marbury - probably the toughest battle…….I would take Steph in a one on one though
Paul Pierce vs. David Lee - P Squared
Jamal Crawford vs. Andre Iguodala - Another good battle….i would take JC
Chris Bosh vs. Devin Harris - BOSH
February 27th, 2008 at 10:44 am
Mike says:
KG - Curry doesn’t have the defense to stop him.
Zach Randolph - Calderon is a great point guard, but can he create a shot for himself and knock it down? Zach has the height and size advantage. Look for Randolph to dominate the boards and when an odd match-up.
Ray Allen - Experience and a sweet stroke win out over youth and defense.
Andre Miller - VC would blow this competition off like he does everything else. Because VC doesn’t take it seriously, Miller steals an upset.
Richard Jefferson - Jefferson was dominant earlier this season, Marbury was pretty good 5 years ago. Got to give it to the taller, better player.
Paul Pierce - He’s got the shakes that’ll make you quake.
The other AI - JC is a bit too streaky for me to give him this match-up. JC would probably force up a bunch of terrible shots and end up losing. Got to give it to Iguodala.
Bosh - Devin Harris has the speed advantage and nothing else. Bosh takes the contest pretty easily.
