If your favorite team hasn’t (or doesn’t) make a significant trade before this week’s deadline, maybe they’re holding out for this summer’s free-agent period. Some of the significant names who will/could be available…
The Josh Twins (Atlanta) — Josh Smith and Josh Childress will be restricted free agents. The trade for Mike Bibby shows the Hawks are serious about winning, and Smith is absolutely imperative in keeping them on the right track. Childress is also a very valuable piece for them, so he should be kept as well, unless he asks for too much money.
Emeka Okafor (Charlotte) — Restricted. He hasn’t been the franchise big man Charlotte hoped for in the ‘04 Draft, but ‘Mek can still be a solid 15-10-2 guy for a number of years.
Jose Calderon (Toronto) — Raptors’ GM Bryan Colangelo has said publicly that he’s gonna bust out the big pen when it comes to re-signing the restricted free agent Calderon.
Luol Deng & Ben Gordon (Chicago) — A lot of people point to Deng and BG’s gunning-for-dollars style as one of the reasons Chicago fell off this year. Both will be restricted free agents in ‘08, but have hurt their value during the Bulls’ disastrous season.
Gilbert Arenas (Washington) — Arenas was all over the place saying he was gonna opt out of his deal this summer, but has he hurt his value since then? His injury, not to mention the fact that the Wizards didn’t fall apart without him, makes him seem like less of a pay-him-the-world guy.
Elton Brand (L.A. Clippers) — Player option on a $16.4 million deal. Is Elton tired of playing on Lottery teams? Does he think he can bring L.A. back to the playoffs? He might be looking to move on, but other teams might have injury/durability concerns, as he’s coming off of an Achilles injury and he’s logged a ton of minutes over the years.
Daniel Gibson (Cleveland) — After All-Star Weekend he’s got to be officially considered one of the League’s elite three-point shooters. He’s a restricted free agent currently making second-round pick money. If you listened real hard, every triple Boobie knocked down during the Rookie Challenge and the Three-Point Shootout was accompanied by a “Cha-ching” sound.
DeSagana Diop (New Jersey) — After a half-season of purgatory in N.J., Diop will resurface this summer as a young (26) seven-footer who can block shots and rebound. He’ll be a valuable commodity.
Allen Iverson (Denver) — A.I. is slated to make $21 million next year but there’s an “early termination option.” I can’t exactly figure out what that means, but it sounds like it’s A.I.’s call if he wants to stay on his same contract. Long story short, I don’t expect to see him anywhere but Denver for the rest of his career.
J.R. Smith (Denver) — Restricted. It’s a gamble, but he’s too talented not to get significant interest.
Andris Biedrins (Golden State) — Restricted. Did you know he’s only 21 years old? Rebounding animal, even on the Warriors, who can block shots and sometimes score a little. The Warriors will have to ante up.
Monta Ellis (Golden State) — Speaking of paying up, what will it take for GS to keep this guy?
Baron Davis (Golden State) — Baron has a player option on a $17.1 million salary. Seems like a good bet for him to stay in the Bay.
Jermaine O’Neal (Indiana) — Another early termination option guy. Prideful as he might be, J.O. has to know that no other team will pay him the $43 million he’s due from the Pacers over the next two seasons.
Sam Cassell & Corey Maggette (L.A. Clippers) — Both have player options, and both are very likely moving on; Cassell is almost a certainty.
Juan Carlos Navarro (Memphis) — Restricted. He came to Memphis to play with his buddy Pau Gasol. Since that’s no longer a factor, what’s keeping him in town? The Lakers might even be able to get J.C. on the cheap if Memphis doesn’t match.
Shawn Marion (Miami) — The Heat win either way. If Matrix exercises his option, they’ve got one of the 20 best players in the game. If he leaves, they have a ton of cap space to get D-Wade some long-term assistance.
Ricky Davis (Miami) — He can give you 20 points a night. Your team is probably destined for the Lottery with him, though.
Sebastian Telfair (Minnesota) — Restricted. He needs to stay put and build some kind of stability in Minnesota, where he’s showing the promise that made him a Lottery pick.
Stephon Marbury (New York) — It’s his call, but you know the Knicks are going to hope and pray he’ll leave the $21 million on the table. Who knows what Steph’s thinking; he could end up in Indiana or Italy next season.
Andre Iguodala (Philadelphia) — Restricted. Probably gonna be looking for franchise-player money, but he’s not a franchise guy. Not sure how far Philly is willing to go to keep him, but can you imagine if a team with cap space like Charlotte grabs Iguodala as another building block?
Ron Artest (Sacramento) — If Ron decides to leave, there are teams out there who will want him, but will it be at the number he wants? If he stays, the Kings will owe him $8.4 million.
Sacramento’s point guards — Beno Udrih, Tyronn Lue and Anthony Johnson will all be on the market, leaving the Kings with zero point guards on the roster. (And no, I’m not counting John Salmons or Francisco Garcia.) If Sacto lets them all go, they have to draft a D.J. Augustin or maybe O.J. Mayo if they’re in position.
San Antonio’s bench — Robert Horry, Mike Finley, Brent Barry, Francisco Elson and Jacque Vaughn are all ‘08 free agents. The Spurs have to make some decisions on who out of this group they want, or do they let most of them go and target younger players? The Duncan/Manu/Parker core is locked up at least through 2009-2010.
Robert Swift (Seattle) — An interesting case. Swift is a 22-year-old seven-footer who still has potential. The Sonics have invested a lot of time and energy into helping him get past his injury issues, and will probably want to keep the restricted free agent and get some return on their investment.
Delonte West (Seattle) — Restricted. He can be an effective bench guy on a good team.
Antawn Jamison (Washington) — There aren’t too many 20-10 guys out there. The Wizards need to keep Jamison if they want to stay competitive, but he’ll have a lot of suitors.

Wow.
What a list. Solid players all over the place in 2008.
Looks like the Clips stand to lose the most while the Warriors will be paying the most.

What??!!!?? No C.J. (5.0 ppg!!!) Miles on this list!
Well, at least he’ll have a chance to go back and try college in a few years.
Jokes aside, he’s better than Anthony Johnson . . .

You hate to be the one to say it but I will..how long after Monta signs a deal will his bum knee blow -up…not long. I’d let him walk.
Josh Smith might be the surprise player you see move-on. There are some attitude issues and in the future I think the Hawks are looking at Horford at the PF and Marvelous at the SF..just need to find a centre..Diop, Sign and trade J.Smith for Deandre Jordan??
Okafor is not a dominant 5/4 and most of the time his team mate Nazr Mohammed plays about the same or equal to him.
Iggy and Philly would both be better-off if he accepted something in the $7-9 million/year range. His poor shot and size are issues that will always prevent him from becming a franchise player. besides..looking a philly’s record tels your something. Good role player? yes. Superstar? not even close.
If Calderon doesn’t stay in Toronto Colangelo should be fired. He is a more athletic version of Steve Nash and the fans love him.
I would really like to see Deng paired with Rudy in Memphis to help rebuild that team. Rudy can play the 2 and Deng the 3. With Conley at PG they’d have a nice young trio to build around.

Unfortunately Bassy is not hitting shots in Minne. Has shown flashes as play maker, but not enough to stay (vis-a-vis Derrick Rose).

i think Josh Smith is a coaches dream. Young guy learning the game who is always developing. Atlanta would be retarded to let him go. I also like J.R. Smith, i think he just need a coach or a vet that can get to him because the kid can play just need to check his attitude and work ethic.

I cant wait to see how the NBA will look goin into next season. I mean we’ve already seen a ton of Big names move on (KG, Shaq, Matrix, Kidd, Gasol, Bibby) need I go on? That list could include Agent 0 and Elton Brand? I just if at least half of these dudes are playin somewhere else next year this whole 10 deep west thing might be even worse because I think thats where many of them may go
