Yesterday we posted the first bracket of Round 1 of the 1-on-1 tournament. If you missed it, here are the rules: Straight 1-on-1, make it-take it, games to 11, all hypothetical. The six division winners will advance to the finals, with two of them getting a bye. (Just like the NFL playoffs.) We’re breaking it down by division. Today, the Pacific. Vote in the comments section to determine the first-round winners:
(1) Kobe Bryant vs. (16) Corey Maggette
(8) Andrew Bynum vs. (9) Shaquille O’Neal
(5) Elton Brand vs. (12) Ron Artest
(4) Baron Davis vs. (13) Stephen Jackson
(6) Pau Gasol vs. (11) Lamar Odom
(3) Amare Stoudemire vs. (14) Grant Hill
(7) Kevin Martin vs. (10) Monta Ellis
(2) Steve Nash vs. (15) Sam Cassell

Steve Nash is the worst defensive player in the league. He couldn’t guard me one on one. He loses in the first round.

Hmmm…..the matchups seem slightly better than the Atlantic. That said,
Kobe over Corey (This would be a close one. No matter how much better you might think Kobe is than Corey, all it boils down to is being able to score on the other guy, and both guys can definitely do that.)
Bynum over Shaq (This one comes down to whether or not they have a tight whistle on Shaq’s offensive fouls)
Brand over Artest (Despite Ron’s D, Brand’s too strong for him)
Jackson over Davis (Baron would have to be on fire to rattle off that many points in a row. S. Jack could easily just post Baron up and get the W if he’s got a possession or two)
Gasol over Odom (Pau’s too big for Odom to guard in the post)
Amare over Hill (Once again, too big, too fast for Hill)
Martin over Ellis (K-Mart’s rangier than Monta and probably not too much slower than him either. I’d also take Martin’s jumper over Ellis anyday)
Cassell over Nash (Nash’s D is horrendous)

Kobe, though not as close as you’d think, Cory is a strong guy.
Shaq, but it would probably be the longest game played.
Brand, just too big for Crazy Ron, even with Ron’s retard strength.
Baron, has anyone ever seen him in those summer leagues? This guy might be the best 1on1 player in the league. Those fools saying Sjack might beat him are crazy.
Stat, Hill might actually physically DIE during the match.
Monta, pretty even, could be a tossup.
Nash, this guy is an amazing 1on1 player, there are some videos of him just ripping up Dirk 1on1…even when Dirk tries to just back him down into the post.

A Few suggestion Dime:
1.) If you gonna do it make it street. Let the players call their on fouls. That way we can see who’s soft (Shouts out to Ginobili)
2.)Let some of the and-1 guys compete have the in their own tournament and the winner plays the NBA’s winner
3.)Make play on the black top with chain nets (lol regarding the nets)
4.)Let the fans pick who plays its for the fans right.
Thats all I gotta say.

I also dont get where these Gasol votes are coming from. Odom would absolutely destroy him. How will gasol even get the ball to the free throw line? You can just see him shooting long turn around jumpers because he has no moves for this type of game. Also wheres the love for Shaq. I realize hes not the same guy anymore and Bynum is becoming a force but cmon a little respect. If there is one thing Shaq can still do its punish someone 1 on 1 especially when he doesnt have to worry about other guys coming to help. No way Bynum takes that one.

(5) Elton Brand vs. (12) Ron Artest - Ron Ron, just cuz he nutz
(4) Baron Davis vs. (13) Stephen Jackson - BDizzle
(6) Pau Gasol vs. (11) Lamar Odom - LO will beat Pau off the dribble
(3) Amare Stoudemire vs. (14) Grant Hill - What? You couldnt find someone better to match STAT up with? Would have been better off flipping Pau and Hill.

Fobuless says:
(1) Kobe Bryant - Kobe can play both Offense and Defense… unlike Corey has an okay shot but not consistent. And he doesn’t play much D.
(8) Andrew Bynum - Bynum has developed some nice moves, he does best when someone pass him the ball. But so does Shaq.
(5) Elton Brand - Brand got size, and can shoot better.
(4) Baron Davis
(11) Lamar Odom - tough call, but Lamar can dribble better.
(3) Amare Stoudemire - If it’s streetball, Amare probably gonna goal tend everytime. But if not, he will still block the daylight out of Grant Hill.
(10) Monta Ellis - Cuz Martin whines too much.
(2) Steve Nash - Sam can shoot, but Steve can shoot and dribble and is quicker.

Nick, Nash is faster while being the same size as Cassell. Nash can score better from anywhere on the court, while also being younger, a better rebounder, and (gasp) getting more steals than Cassell. You’re right, though, I’m sure Cassell’s 7 pound advantage will help offset his 6 FG% difference and 20% 3pt% difference. Yea, you’re right. Hmmm…
February 26th, 2008 at 2:23 pm
Azad says:
Kobe v. Maggette…Kobe wins, no one’s calling fouls in this game for Corey to get his 10 + FT attempts-
Bynum v. Shaq-how is anyone even going to dribble by each other? I would love to see this, I think healthy Bynum takes down Shaq with a little extra athleticism
Brand v. Artest-Gotta be Artest..big men who can’t score off the dribble are going to be disadvantaged in this-I know Brand can shoot a little bit off the dribble but he’s probably not backing Ron-Ron down too far
Baron v. S-Jack-come on, don’t put these guys against each other…gotta take Baron, although Captain Jack’s size could bug Baron a little bit, I don’t think so
Amare v. Grant Hill-Amare will score all the points on dunks and win
Monta v. Kevin Marin-no one in the league can stop Monta 1 on 1 off the dribble at this point, good luck Martin
Nash v. Sam-I-Am-if you put this question about 5 years ago, this is a game…Stevie takes this own
February 26th, 2008 at 2:33 pm
dh says:
Kobe 81-4 (Kobe is crazy competitive which is a big factor, not to mention his overall skill is unmatched)
Shaq 11-9 (Bynum’s got some post up moves and is quicker but Shaq’s just too big and strong to stop him one on one. There would be a lot of dunks in this one)
Brand 11-7 (There are certain spots around the rim where Brand doesn’t miss. Ron’s a better defender but his shot is too inconsistent and someone just threw a cup at him)
Baron 11-5 (Baron’s too quick for S Jack who jumped into the stands because someone threw a cup at his friend)
Odom 11-7 (Gasol’s got a great shot but he’s suspect on D. But Lamar’s got some dribbling skills and he’s more athletic. I see Lamar dribbling around him twice before some easy layups)
Amare 11-4 (Amare’s bigger and quicker. He’s have a dunk almost every time)
Monta 11-9 (This is a good match up. Bunch of jump shots in this one. Monta’s speed will get him some easier shots though)
Cassell 11-8 (Sam would post up on him every time and he makes the “easy ones”. Nash is quick and hits some tough shots but I don’t think he has that drive to beat Cassell)
February 26th, 2008 at 2:41 pm
dagwaller says:
DH, you know that Pau blocks more than twice as many shots as Odom, right?
February 26th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
dagwaller says:
Also, if Cassell’s post game is so good, then why is it that he’s scoring less on worse shooting (where you’d think that being good in the post would help you) than Nash? Like the man said - if this was a few years ago, it’d be a game. At this point in their careers? Later, Cassell.

Shaq - Sorry Bynum. Good mathcup though.
Artest - For the idiot who said Brand it too big. Brand has one inch and 0 pounds on Ron Ron.
Baron - easy
Pau - Dunno if he is stronger that Lamar but he is too skilled
Grant - Amare would get some dunks, but Grant is too… everything
Kmart - easy win for K$. He’s got 4 inches on Monta, and they are both the same speed. Kevin is also better 1 on 1 player and they have the same quickness.
Sam - He’s like 40 and would still tear Nash up
ps. Everyboyd except for like 2 of you say Monta. Have any of you watched a Kings games this season? I dont blame you.
February 27th, 2008 at 10:56 am
Mike says:
Kobe - unless your name is Jordan or LBJ, you are more than likely going to lose to Kobe.
Shaq - Shaq turns his game up when it matters. He would go whole hog into this kind of match-up just so he could say something like, “not yet, young fella.”
Ron-Ron - Elton Brand is a great ballplayer but Ron-Ron’s game is almost perfect for 1-on-1.
Baron Davis - Stephen Jackson tends to hoist up some bad shots. A couple of those would allow Boom Dizzle the opportunity to take the lead and the match. Close match-up, though.
Pau - This was a tough one to call. I gave it to Pau because I think he has a little more range (I could be wrong about that).
Grant Hill - Really it would come down to who misses a shot first. All offense, no defense. I think Grant Hill’s smarts would guide him to the win.
Monta Ellis - Monta is a bit more prolific as a scorer. The match-up could go either way. I say Monta’s scoring gets the win.
Steve Nash - As long as he takes it seriously and puts effort into it he will win (i.e. if Nash goes at it like he did this year’s 3 point contest, he will lose). I’ll give it to Nash, but it is closer than most people would think.

williams says:
you cant really use stats like “pau blocks twice as many shots as odom” dagwaller, this is ONE-ON-ONE. How many of Paus (or anyones) blocks come in a one on one situation, i’d say 70% plus come from help situations where the bigs come across to block a smaller player. I just dont see him winning this matchup I can see why your thinking he would but i dont know how much you play one-on-one, is a different game homie.

williams, I know that 1v1 is a different game. But when a guy has double (DOUBLE) the blocked shots of another guy, you have to assume that SOME of them don’t come from the weak side. Couldn’t you assume the same thing about Lamar Odom?
Same thing with their FG%. Pau is simply a better shooter. Otherwise, their FG% would be similar. Over the course of a season, if Odom was a better shooter/shotblocker, wouldn’t the numbers eventually even out any “lucky shots” or “weak side blocks”? Pau simply has too many moves, too much size, and better shooting. He’s essentially a bigger Lamar Odom.
