BREAKING NEWS: KIDD TRADE “IMMINENT”

From Marc Stein at ESPN.com:

Sources told ESPN.com that talks between the Mavericks and Nets, which had seemingly stalled, grew serious after the teams played Sunday night in New Jersey and have moved them to the brink of completing the NBA’s third blockbuster deal of the month.

Although sources say that the teams are still sorting out final details, this deal was described as “imminent” by one source close to the process after negotiations moved to an advanced stage Tuesday night. The proposed swap — salvaged from talks of a three-way trade with Portland that developed and fizzled quickly two weeks ago — would require Dallas to send 24-year-old point guard Devin Harris, veteran swingman Jerry Stackhouse, the expiring contracts of center DeSegana Diop and swingman Devean George and another player such as guard Maurice Ager to New Jersey for Kidd and possibly forward Malik Allen or veteran guard Darrell Armstrong.

It’s believed that Dallas would also send New Jersey cash ($3 million is the league maximum) and one or two future first-round draft choices. One source told ESPN.com that the Mavericks and Nets were also discussing a separate trade that would send Antoine Wright to Dallas for a future second-round pick.

The Mavs need something to happen. Back-to-back losses to the Nets and Sixers? They hardly look like players in the West.

Damn Niggas are scrabbling. Giving up Devin may have fucked them, will see.

  2. G says:

Whoa. That seems like a lot. Harris will be good for a long time. Also Stack and Diop may be role players but come playoff time i think Dallas will miss that scoring and defense. I dunno seems like they might be reaching on this one.

  3. Bust Jlaze says:

Somehow this feels like NewJersey wins in this deal…they get like a whole new team!

  4. williehobbes says:

dirk, j-kidd, jt, & howard is a killer four….dampier is the perfect center for those guys. that bench is beyond wack though

  5. Mike says:

Wow - this was unexpected. Mark Cuban flat out denied a scenario like this. I really think this works out well for both teams. Kidd will bring out the best in Dirk, Terry, and Howard, while NJ gets some depth and scoring help it badly needed.

The one player the Mavs will miss the most: Diop. Who is going to guard all the big men in the West?

  6. Top Gun says:

I had a feeling this would happen after Kidd manhandled Dallas last week. But nothin is final

  7. Shep says:

This looks like a Cuban panic move. Dallas gave up too much. I would have kept Harris, who’s only going to develop and get better. Plus, they’re going to miss Stack’s toughness down the stretch.

  8. Spliff 2 My Lou says:

I agree with G. That’s a lot to give up. The Mavs bench would suddenly become a lot weaker at the 5 spot. Kidd’s great but if he gets injured they’re done. I don’t know how many more productive seasons Kidd has left in him.

  9. Kobeef says:

This is a desperate, Knee-jerk move by the Mavs and Nets.

Looking at the people you listed this trade works.but WOW - The Mavs give-up their bench and Harris for 2 years of Kidd…which I am willing to bet won’t be championship years.

    Kidd = $19 Million

    Harris + Stack + George + Diop + $3 million cash = $19 million

The Nets are hopeless with or without the trade. They are stuck with Wince and RJ for the next 3 years and will go nowhere. Sucks to be a Nets fan but hey, they’re used to it.

  10. Spliff 2 My Lou says:

It doesn’t make sense for the Mavs to give up Diop. Every other western conference powerhouse has gotten bigger. They need a big body to use against amare/shaq, duncan, boozer/okur, and gasol/bynum. They’ll get beasted inside.

  11. GEE...nominated for new pop folk rap group album of the year says:

FEB. SON! It’s not only black history month but the major trades go down too. I’m geeked plain and simple.

Let me just say sometimes it’s good not to know certain people. Cause I honestly have to feel I would be either slappin or cussin out the Rockets GM right now if they don’t try to make a trade before the deadline.

Lakers, Suns, Spurs made trades and you know Dallas and Cuban wasn’t going to let them get all that shine and not be able to bring something to the table. You got Denver who needs to trade their coach more than a player but GK will get your team to the playoffs I will say that. Anyway Denver trying to get Ron Artest, but honestly Denver, Portland and N.O. don’t need to make no trades. Golden State goes and gets Webber, yea it’s not a biggie but they still making a move. Didn’t Utah go and get Korver??? I don’t know but they straight too. Then you have HOUSTON.

Man W.T.F! Come on even Ray, Stevie, and that dude who sang “I be strokin” can see they need to make a move. As excited as I am to see all the trades, it’s kinda depressing cause Houston is lame-ing out right now.

Anyway Nets get a whole new squad and they should be interesting depending on what they do with drafts and coaching and all.
The Mavs have a sick starting line-up, but if someone gets injured or they need the bench…then it sucks to be a Mav.
    I still applaud the move.
Can somebody in the Rocket’s Brass pay some @%@$#%@% attention!?!?!

  12. Jah says:

This doesn’t sound like a good deal for Dallas in my opinion. In fact, New Jersey comes out a DEEP team after this!

  13. Mike C says:

Giving up Harris hurts them in the long run.. but for the remainder of this year, the Mavs have undoubtedly become a stronger team. Now there are three GREAT teams in the West, along with the defending champs Spurs. The playoffs should be ridiculous..

  14. Mike C says:

Plus, Utah and New Orleans are good too.. crazy..

  15. BlazeMcHerbs says:

They are really gonna miss Diop, and they’re giving away 2 draft picks ? Its a lil too pricey for me to believe…

  16. Sushi says:

This made no sense when it first was rumored, made no sense when Portland was mentioned in a 3 way, and makes even less sense now! This is just bad. The Mavs are giving up WAY to much to get back one guy, who mind you, QUIT ON HIS TEAM AT ONE POINT THIS SEASON! Kidd is an amazing point guard, undoubtable one of the best I’ve had the pleasure of seeing in my lifetime, but seriously. This deal is just plain dumb. Mavs out in the first round. Again.

  17. Icy says:

Man oh man this is ridiculous. Maybe everyone out west is realizing the top nine…NINE teams in the west have better winning pct. then all but the top two in the east. This is nuts

  18. NB says:

This deal may not go down after all. Devean freaking George of all people has blocked the trade. Didn’t this jackass say he wanted to traded just last week? Who does he think he is? Anyway, I hope it does go down for Dallas. As much as I loved Devin Harris and his speed, Dallas definitely needed a change. Also, Dirk and Josh work waaaaay too hard for their own shots. J-Kidd is the answer!

  19. Sushi says:

Of course George would block this trade. Going to a team that has the wing pretty much locked? A guy like him wants to go to a team where he’s actually get some tick. I’d do it too if I wear him. Mavs may not be screwed after all.

  20. kobeef says:

How did Devean George get a no-trade clause?
How do NJ and Dallas re-group after this? Their cards are on the table so it’s pretty hard to pull the team back together after this.

  21. K-Dizzle says:

lol Devean George has Larry Bird rights? lol

  22. bbbb says:

Larry Bird rights aren’t what let him block the trade. He used the no trade clause (wtf!) to protect his Larry Bird rights, which would let Dallas sign him to big bucks without paying luxury tax. I guess it makes it easier for them to do a sign and trade with him. The luxury tax is so confusing, but either way, I can’t imagine Cuban is going to want to do any favors for George in the off season after he blew up this trade…

  23. Duke says:

Wouldn’t it be damn hilarious if the Lakers swooped right in and traded for Jason Kidd from under the Mavs?

  24. marcus says:

Poetic justice that he blocks the trade and puts up a big Goose Egg a few hours later..
