Dwight vs. Van Gundy
Notice how Dwight Howard wasn’t on the floor for a crucial two-minute stretch during last night’s 118-111 loss to the Cavaliers? Well, according to the Orlando Sentinel, Dwight said something that wasn’t really to Stan Van Gundy‘s liking, thus prompting his trip to the bench.
“That’s going to be between Dwight and I, but his focus isn’t where it needs to be,” Van Gundy said. “I don’t think right now we’re on the same page, to be quite honest.”
“His focus is on the offensive end,” Van Gundy said. “He gets discouraged when he doesn’t get the ball. I think the numbers prove that what we need him to focus on to win is defensive rebounding, but that’s not what he wants to do right now and we’ve got a little bit of a conflict.”
While Van Gundy shot off about his frustrations, Howard looked to quell any controversy before it started. He shouldered the blame for last night’s loss, and said that the Magic’s success is a direct result of his play.
“There are no problems with me and Stan Van Gundy,” Howard said. “It’s just like when families have problems. We’re going to have fights and disappointments.”
“I got frustrated a little bit,” he said. “I got to do what’s right for my team. They need me to be focused on what I can do. . . . If I don’t do those things we’re going to be a mediocre team.”

Glad to see that Dwight is keeping his head in check on this one. It’d be a shame to see him turn into a coach killing star like so many stars have come to be in this day and age.

Props to Dwight for taking it like a man and not freaking out like most stars in the league would do.

Stan shouldn’t be putting Dwight out there like that though. Props to Dwight for taking a higher road.

I’m not a big fan of him or his black eyed brother. How did these two become coaches anyways?!

I’d rather see a coach like Van Gundy saying it out loud like this & not cowering in fear like most coaches would. Coaches are going to get fired at some point, so you might as well say it like it is (or you think it is) & coach with some integrity before the axe inevitably falls.
I’d like to see Mike Brown try something like this. HA!

Props to Dwight, yes. BUT I’m pumped to hear Stan throw out his star like that. He didn’t bash him. In fact his immediate response to the question was “That’s going to be between Dwight and I…” That’s taking the high road. Then he just points out what Dwight needs to do. I doubt that Stan wouldn’t or hasn’t said that to Dwight in practice. More coaches should be able to do this! These players are getting millions of JACK a year to play… the coaches are getting paid to put them in a system.
I like it. I bet Dwight responds well on the court.

Dwight never gets the ball… he only gets like 10 touches a game… and a lot of his shot attempts come off offensive rebounds
