1-on-1 Tournament: Round 2 (Pacific)
While the top four seeds in the Pacific Division advanced from Round 1, the rest of the matchups were all upsets according to the readers’ vote, which we tallied through Sunday. Most notably, Kobe swept Corey Maggette, while Steve Nash barely got past Sam Cassell (who was still with the Clippers when we started this whole thing) and Shaq won a close vote over Andrew Bynum.
Going into Round 2, here are the rules: Straight 1-on-1, make it-take it, games to 11 (by ones and twos), all hypothetical. The six division winners will advance to the finals, with two of them getting a bye, just like the NFL playoffs. Vote in the comments section to determine the second-round winners:
(1) Kobe Bryant vs. (9) Shaquille O’Neal
(4) Baron Davis vs. (12) Ron Artest
(3) Amare Stoudemire vs. (11) Lamar Odom
(2) Steve Nash vs. (10) Monta Ellis

Monta- Nash has zero D.

(1) Kobe Bryant vs. (9) Shaquille O’Neal – Kobe. Kobe is too fast and too skilled.
(4) Baron Davis vs. (12) Ron Artest – Ron Artest. Baron would give him buckets, but Ron-Ron has the complete game to pull out the win.
(3) Amare Stoudemire vs. (11) Lamar Odom – Amare Stoudemire. They have a similar game, Amare is just better.
(2) Steve Nash vs. (10) Monta Ellis – Monta Ellis. I’m kind of surprised Nash made it this far. He isn’t all that much of a scorer. Ellis would give him fits.

OOO that sucks for Shaq. Maybe Shaq of 10 years ago could beat Kobe but not Shaq from right now. I say Ron Ron is the last person that too ez (who I got the name from) wants to face, hes the perfect matchup to stop him so I say Ron as long as he doesnt blow a gasket. I only say Stat over Odom cause of the physicality wearin Odom down cause I dont think Stat can guard odom, hes too long and versitile and unfortunately for Nash Monta is FAR too quick. If it was 2 on 2 hed be able to pass and get help but Monta would work him alone. Nash would score too but as has been the problem for Phoenix, people cant be stopped

Kobe. Normally I go with a dominant big man over a dominant guard, but Shaq’s simply not dominant anymore.
I’m going to go with Artest over Baron Davis. Artest is a better shooter and is bigger than Davis, and Davis’s quickness advantage is somewhat negated by Artest being such a great defender.
Lamar Odom over STAT. Lamar is too multitalented, and STAT isn’t as good at creating his own shot as Lamar is. It’s not as easy to dunk over everyone when you don’t have Steve Nash feeding you.
Nash, on the strength of his 3 pt. shooting. Every other scoring category is a wash, and please, can we stop pretending that Nash is the only guy in the league that doesn’t play defense? It’s not like the Warriors are winning games with their D; they play the same freewheeling style that the Suns do. Obviously, though, they’re not as good as the Suns.
But Nash’s 3 pt shooting, which would be important in a game where otherwise they’re equal, is light years ahead of Ellis’s. 46% to 21%. Think about it. Neither can play defense, they’re both really quick and can shoot from the floor. But one guy can shoot all the way out to the three point line. And those shots are worth more, guys! Think about it!

anyone who pics nash over monta doesnt seem to understand one on one….nash has NEVER been really known for breaking down a defender and getting buckets, he weaves in and out of screens and pics and drops the ball off to someone or speeds down court and pulls up for 3′s.
Monta on the other hand is faster than nash, and known for bein a 1 on 1 style player. I mean the kid did avearge 40+ppg in high school. So nash’s 3s wouldnt matter simply because in a game of one on one, monta would be picking him up once he checked the rock. its not like nash is iverson or jamal crawford with the crossovers and hes dont have anyone to run monta off of either. So wheres all his points going to come from? While nash can put up points from time to time, hes NEVER been known as a bulk scorer or a lock down defender, you usually need to be one of the other in 1-on-1 basketball

Bron42 says:
kobe – this ones cake although I do see shaq ending kobes career with one hard foul at game point
Artest – he can lock down any position and is alot bigger and stronger than diddy
Odom – Amare has no handle and considering him and odom are similar in size, unless stat is dunkin from the 3point line(depending where your checkin it) hes not gonna bully odom and back him down to dunk for like 11 straight points.
Monta – See above post.

(1) Kobe Bryant vs. (9) Shaquille O’Neal…I dont know how people figure that today’s Shaq would be able to keep up with Bynum….this must be like the ASG voting, just take your favorite, regardless of who is the better talent. KB24 takes this one in a blowout.
(4) Baron Davis vs. (12) Ron Artest….wow, BDizzle vs. Ron Ron….While Davis is quick and strong, Ron has the height and same strength. I think Ron Ron would work the short game and take an 11-10 victory.
(3) Amare Stoudemire vs. (11) Lamar Odom…in a 1-1 game, would have to be Lamar would take Amare, but Stat would still make it close.
(2) Steve Nash vs. (10) Monta Ellis…Again, another close one…Neither has great strength, Nash has the smarts, while Ellis has the athleticism. Though my heart would go with Nash, I think that even he would agree that in a 1-1 game, Monta would pull out the single point victory.

Nash (one-on-one is much of a mind-game than everybody thinks. Ellis is still one-way offensive player with the drives and still he’s missing those open shots. Nash will shoot every open three he got)
