1-on-1 Tournament: Round 2 (Southeast)
Like the Magic needed any more affirmation that they made the right choice in ’04, only one of you thought Emeka Okafor would beat Dwight Howard in a 1-on-1 matchup. There were also two sweeps in the first round of the Southeast Division bracket, with Marvin Williams and Ray Felton being blanked by their respective opponents according to the readers’ votes (tallied through Wednesday).
Going into Round 2, here are the rules: Straight 1-on-1, make it-take it, games to 11 (by ones and twos), all hypothetical. The six division winners will advance to the finals, with two of them getting a bye, just like the NFL playoffs. Vote in the comments section to determine the second-round winners:
(1) Dwyane Wade vs. (8) Josh Smith
(4) Shawn Marion vs. (5) Caron Butler
(3) Gilbert Arenas vs. (11) Gerald Wallace
(2) Dwight Howard vs. (7) Antawn Jamison
Round 1 voting:
Wade 18, Williams 0
Smith 13, Turkoglu 4
Butler 13, Richardon 4
Marion 16, Bibby 1
Wallace 10, Johnson 7
Arenas 17, Felton 0
Jamison 12, Lewis 5
Howard 16, Okafor 1

Mike says:
(1) Dwyane Wade vs. (8) Josh Smith – Josh Smith. He has the athleticism to stay with Wade. He also has a huge height advantage. Add to all this the fact that Wade won’t have the refs giving him every call and we have an upset on our hands.
(4) Shawn Marion vs. (5) Caron Butler – Shawn Marion. The Matrix can do it on offense and he has shut down defense. That is little better than Caron.
(3) Gilbert Arenas vs. (11) Gerald Wallace – Gerald Wallace. Gilbert is good, but his reputation is bigger than his skills. Gerald Wallace is bigger and will go in with “nobody believes I can win” mentality.
(2) Dwight Howard vs. (7) Antawn Jamison – Dwight Howard. I just hope Antawn doesn’t get hurt.

Gil
Antawn (this would be close, but Antawn’s big enough he won’t get completely killed by Dwight’s size, and he’s skilled enough offensively, I think he can take him. Dwight’s not used to handling the ball to that extent and his range is all the way out to a dunk, so I tend to lean toward the skilled guy in a close, 11-9 game…)

(8) Josh Smith – Smith’s game just seemed to be custom fit for a tournament like this. And I hate to say it, but a huge part of Wade’s game is getting to the free throw line. I would even call it his first priority, and there are no refs here. Smith is a beast.

Josh Smith (it’s already been said)
Caron Butler (good offensive skills and a solid defender in his own right – plus Matrix can’t create his own shot)
Crash (he’d bulldoze through Arenas)
Jamison (starting at the top of the arc with the ball would be really hard on Dwight. he turns the ball over enough already at 3+ per game, can you imagine how often that would be if he actually had to dribble it? plus Jamison is good at getting steals, and has a moderate handle for a big guy)

Wade is too versatile – Smith is just as athletic but needs to work on his J.
Butler – vastly underated. Marion and his funky release can’t find the bottom of the net enough.
Arenas – too many moves…Wallace crushes Arenas more than once though.
Superman – Jamison and his outside game keep it close but who can keep Howard from his own putbacks?

lol Jamison has no nickname. Um this is the best 2nd round because one really has to think.
(1) Dwyane Wade vs. (8) Josh Smith – As much as I want to pick the upset, Ive seen Dwade do too much damage to not pick him to win
(4) Shawn Marion vs. (5) Caron Butler – Caron easy because as much as Marion is a very good defender and athlete on the offensive end Caron will steal the ball from him most possessions and then theres that whole inability to create shot thing
(3) Gilbert Arenas vs. (11) Gerald Wallace – This one is odd. Are we talkin Gil who dropped 60 on the Lakers? or post injury Gil? If its the former Crash really has no chance but the latter I dont really kno because of Crash’s go hard attitude. Im givin it to 0 though only because of his scoring potential
(2) Dwight Howard vs. (7) Antawn Jamison – As good as Jamison is I personally think Dwight will take this whole thing so D12… Lol Jamison has no nickname, not even AJ? terrible lol

(4) Shawn Marion vs. (5) Caron Butler- good matchup, but Marion wins
(3) Gilbert Arenas vs. (11) Gerald Wallace- Wallace- plays good D on Gil 0
(2) Dwight Howard vs. (7) Antawn Jamison-Jamison- if he gets ball 1st how is he going to stop jumper
March 7th, 2008 at 11:08 am
drew says:
1) Wade – Assuming Wade is 100% healthy
2) Butler – Remember this is one-on-one people, Marion’s biggest advantages would be largely negated (speed, athleticism, off-ball movement) – he can’t create his own space/shot, he can’t outrun his defender to the other side of the court, it would be a good match up still, but Caron would take him
3) Gilbert – Who’s better at 1 on 5 ball then this guy? Take the other 4 defenders out of the picture…major advantage to Gilbert
4) Howard – This is a tough call, but I’ll go with Howard since he’s more likely to grind Jamison with pure power than Jamison is likely to rain J’s on Howard

hoopsguru says:
(1) Dwyane Wade vs. (8) Josh Smith….DWade should win this, but it wont be the blowout that you may think.
(4) Shawn Marion vs. (5) Caron Butler….Caron will take this one, both are tough on D, but Butler has the ability to create his own shot better than Matrix, and has the edge in being a tougher player.
(3) Gilbert Arenas vs. (11) Gerald Wallace…This would be a tough one. I would have to give it to Hibachi, but not by much.
(2) Dwight Howard vs. (7) Antawn Jamison…I voted for Okafor, and will vote for Jamison for the same reason, there is just no way that DH can take someone off the dribble from the 3pt line.

DT says:
Wade – Too Quick
Butler – Far superior to Matrix on the Offensive end. Can hold his own on D. Killer MidRange Jumper, now has a sweet three stroke as well.
Gil – You think Wallace can guard Gil of the dribble? If he does then Gil will rain 30 footers in his eye.
Jamison – Seriously, it’s a one on one tourny. Jamison will slice Howard up with hsi crafty scoopr and hook shots. Also has a nice 3-Ball. Can howard shoot the jumper, or have a solid enough handle to penetrate and get near the hoop?
