1-on-1 Tournament: Round 3 (Northwest)
The Northwest Division second round saw just the second tie (according to readers’ votes tallied through Wednesday) in our 1-on-1 tournament, between Deron Williams and Brandon Roy. (The first tie was in the Ben Gordon vs. Danny Granger matchup in the Central Division first round.) In such cases we go to the Dime crew to settle, and the office declared Roy the winner by a close vote.
Going into the divisional semis, here are the rules: Straight 1-on-1, make it-take it, games to 11 (by ones and twos), all hypothetical. The six division winners will advance to the finals, with two of them getting a bye, just like the NFL playoffs. Vote in the comments section to determine the winners:
(1) Allen Iverson vs. (5) Brandon Roy
(2) Carlos Boozer vs. (3) Carmelo Anthony
Round 2 voting:
Iverson 40, Kirilenko 15
Williams 28, Roy 28
‘Melo 53, Okur 1
Boozer 39, Jefferson 15

(1) Allen Iverson vs. (5) Brandon Roy – Brandon Roy. If AI was in his prime, it would be AI’s tourney to lose. But the fact is that AI isn’t what he used to be. AI gets eaten up by Brandon Roy in this match-up.
(2) Carlos Boozer vs. (3) Carmelo Anthony – Carmelo Anthony. ‘Melo has too many moves on offense. Also, ‘Melo is a bit more athletic than Boozer. That is enough for him to take this match-up.

I’m going with AI over Roy. Iverson is so disrespected its not even funny. I think AI being the alpha dog he is will pick up his defense vs Roy and it will be a rap. I don’t even see how Brandon Roy even made it past D-Will. Iverson is arguably the best 1 on 1 player in the league (and one of the quickess) and I can’t stand when people say “he’s not the player he used to be”. Dude leads the league in minutes played, leads his team in ppg, assists and steals…what else does he need to do for you? Dude’s still playing in his prime! Give it a rest already. STOP THE HATE IN 08′!!!!
And yes “Dip set city”…I think there might be a some people voting under different screennames (check the IP addresses before you calculate the votes DIME, LOL) because there are a lot of wierd looking screennames in here that i’ve never seen before, I understand new people come to sites everyday and everyone has their own opinion, but damn, stop it already.
I think that Melo and Boozer would be closer then some might think. Boozer is a beast and Melo doesn’t play a lick of defense either (the way some claim Iverson doesn’t), so that would be a match up I would like to see. With that said, i’ll still go with Melo….slightly.

Okay, I agree that someone is in here hating. Lol, its either A.)Brandon Roys 2 fans or B.)some hateful Denver Nuggets fans, thats right i’ve seen some of you hateful fans online. Just trying to get Iverson out the tournement so he won’t go up against Melo.
Brandon Roy barely deserved to even be in the All Star game, I think B Diddy should have taken his spot. I don’t care how much taller B. Roy is over Iverson. As mentioned, Iverson is said to be the best one on one player in the league, thats said by real NBA players not a bunch of people sitting around the computer. Combine that with how quick he is and how great of a scorer he is and there really is no competition. Brandon can barely gaurd Iverson in a regular team game, what makes you think he could gaurd him one on one? Please. Iverson wins this, and tells all the haters to kick rocks.
I also agree that Iverson is the same player he always was. He is 3rd in scoring and in the top ten in about three other catagories. He is number one in points in the paint, which means he is as aggresive as he ever was. People said the same things about KG last season, that he wasn’t the same player. Those guys are the same players in different uniforms and just because they are in a different team setting doesn’t make them any different then the players they always have been. That shit has to get on those players nerves, because it gets on mine.
And even though I think Carmelo is starting to look overrated, I think that he would win over Boozer but not by much. It will all come down to defensive stops and if Melo is hot that day.

The thing that may keep it close is that AI gets to hack more is a streetball setting…but once Roy figures he can get rough with AI too, I don’t see him able to stop Roy from backing him down. AI’s got a good crossover (not nearly as good a first step as he once had), but Roy’s got good recovery and a height advantage of at least 6″. Aside from the crossover, AI’s got the “going left and shooting right” in the lane thing that works in a game, but doesn’t work more than once or twice in 1-on-1. I got Roy.

I got Roy and Melo.
AI / Roy matchup is an interesting one. I agree AI could take over with an offensive spurt, esp. with winner takes ball. But AI’s outside shot is gonna be negated to some extent by Roy’s size. Given roughly equal handles I give the edge to Roy, but could go either way on any given day. Melo is a no brainer imo, big enough to bother bozer just enough, and Mlo is one of the purest scorers in the league.

Boozer
Seriously, why is Melo winning this with such an overwhelming margin? Boozer is one of the best defensive players in the league, and wouldn’t be afraid to rough up Carmelo. It would at least be a close game.
…Although, I’d love to see Ron Artest play Carmelo one-on-one. That would be a matchup for the ages.

B-Roy in a landslide. Roy has one of the best first steps in the league, in addition to size. This is too easy. Refs can’t bail you out in a 1 on 1 game, AI.
Boozer too. He’s just too tall.

Brandon Roy is better than Teen Wolf says:
Brandon’s got this. I mean, what’s Iverson going to do? It’ll be like a gnat trying to defend Zeus.
Melo, his mid-range game will set it up.

Ted says:
Roy over AI, one on one Roy will get better looks on offense than will AI. Defense wins this one.
Melo over Boozer, unless Melo is smoking his buddies left behinds in his backpack, in which case Boozer would barely edge out the victory.

an in-his-prime AI would probably be a different story. But Roy has height and strength advantages while both are proabably going to be able to drive on one another…rebounding and posting up for a couple easy baskets gives the victory to roy

What is this?! are you seriously calling me out in a blog about opinions? honestly? thats just laughable. look at post below me, they state some of the same things i said, AI is old! He gets bailed out by refs because of his career fta being like 9-10 a game. answer me this, HOW WILL HE DEFEND ROY? HOW? whats that? silence because you don’t know? exactly, since when has iverson ever been deemed a defensive player? i’ve never heard ever. i believe most people who have voted for ai are just fairweather fans/or are unable to see there are better players in the league. so, go see brandon roy play, he is the prototypical do everything guard. ai just scores. multifaceted games are far superior.
even melo knows not of defense, just of some simplistic 2-3 zone he learned at Cuse. Only reason i chose melo over boozer is because if melo gets first, all it is is a cross over and step back from about 15-18 on the wings.
