Jim Calhoun Lays Down the Law

This is the second time that we’ve seen Jim Calhoun go haywire at Madison Square Garden this year. Earlier this season when the Huskies couldn’t figure out which basket to shoot at, Calhoun watched as Chris Douglas-Roberts folded Stanley Robinson into his pocket to the tune of 33 points and 7 boards. Calhoun exploded after that one, calling out his whole team, and saved something special for Jeff Adrien - he said that they played “without a four” that night.

This afternoon, UConn led 20-14 and then 29-26 in the game’s early stages of their second-round game against West Virginia. But another ridiculous individual performance buckled the Huskies, namely Stanley Robinson, and UConn fell 78-72 to the Mountaineers. At one point during the second half, Jimmy was so flustered by the whooping administered to Robinson by Joe Alexander, he pulled Robinson aside during a timeout and went into a full scream/finger-wagging tirade. Alexander finished with 34 points and 7 boards, one-upping CDR, and taking his place as the source of Stanley Robinson’s sleepless nights.

After it was all said and done, here’s what Calhoun had to say about his team’s performance. There are some gems here:

“Some games are very complex. You mull over them, why you won or why you lost, and it’s difficult. This one’s very easy. They came out, and they kicked our butt and they outworked us and won the game. We had physical mismatches, which we hever took advantage of inside. 42-26 on the glass, especially when we were coming back, we couldn’t get any defensive rebounds to get ourselves going. And we were unwilling for 40 minutes to put the kind of effort you need into a tournament game. Simple. Case closed. We go home.”

When asked what he “takes out of this,” Jimmy fired back:

“I take nothing out of it. I take nothing out of it. A lot of worry.”

Someone questioned whether he is concerned about post play going forward…

“But am I concerned about Hasheem? I’m concerned that he played awful today and he looked tired for the first time all year, and the fact that Jeff had a bad game offensively and defensively. Rebounding, particularly, the two of them, where we had our butts handed to us, where I thought we had advantages in there.”
