LeBron (photo. Mannion)We mentioned in Smack today about how LeBron and DeShawn Stevenson were yapping at each other before the game even really started last night in Washington and carried all the way through to the end.
The Wizards Insider Blog on the Washington Post’s web site got a lot more from DeShawn after the game about the trash talk and Stevenson’s thoughts on ‘Bron:
Stevenson wasn’t backing down.
Afterward, he talked about how the Cavs tried to punk the Wizards and how he’s tired of it.
“I was just trying to get up under his skin and make him think about me playing, competing and talking trash. I played with Raja Bell in Utah and I take a lot of things from him. He’s a great defender. Sometimes you gotta do that with those guys. Those guys play guys that are scared of them all day so sometimes, you gotta get under their skin and talk some trash and tonight, I tried to do that.”
And then the “overrated” quote:
DeShawn was obviously holding back in that session with reporters around his locker. When he was leaving the building, Mike Lee was chatting him up and mentioned LeBron again. DeShawn has obviously heard enough of that.
“He’s overrated,” DeShawn told Mike. “And you can say I said that.”
Wow. Bet the King won’t like that one. Here’s hoping that the Wiz manage to jump ahead of Toronto and grab that fifth spot so these teams meet again.

Celts Fan says:
Deshawn’s right (in a sense.) A good amount of people want to call LeBron the best player in the league. He’s not, that would be Kobe. LeBron’s #2 (#3 at worst, you CAN make a case for Duncan, though I wouldn’t) but if people call him #1, then he is, technically, over-rated. I don’t know that I’d ever say that if I had to play against him, but technically, Deshawn is right. Just watch your head next time dude, cuz I have a feeling LeBron’s gonna be trying to dunk on you every single possession. Damon Jones part 2 coming soon?

Celts Fan says:
YAll, DeShawn’s not winning this year (though he’s been really, really improved and may get some votes if they have to list a top 5 or something, but not 1st place votes. There’s just way too many guys that’ve taken big leaps this year. Probably the deepest Most Improved field I can remember!)
Most Improved to me:
1. Hedo
2. Kaman
3. Beno Udrah
4. David West
5. DeShawn

I can see either Jose Calderon or Hedo winning MIP. Either one is legit and no one could argue that the winner didn’t earn/deserve it.
But back to this DeShawn Stevenson quote for a minute. I’m all for calling someone out. Speak the truth or motivate yourself; whatever works.
But…it also helps to have some credentials of your own before you start calling other players out.
LeBron has some hardware already and more coming (Olympic gold medal, scoring title etc..)
DeShawn Stevenson doesn’t have anything worth anything.

I hear that. But it wasn’t a bad stretch. TJ Ford came back and altered the rotation again.
2 bad weeks at this point (post ASG) is not enough to eliminate Jose Calderon from consideration.
The full body of work matters more to me. In a long season, there will no doubt be good stretches and bad stretches.

didn’t even think of Calderon, though I still have to put Hedo over him. Hedo’s been THE GUY on the Magic ON OFFENSE (Dwight can only dunk. He’s amazing, but dunks aren’t enough to win. Hedo’s doing the heavy lifting outside of the paint and is 4th in the NBA in 4th quarter ppg!)

Calderon is to inconsistent to win ish this year. If he gets it, it will be sympathy because someone or some people felt he got All-Star snubbed….which he didn’t.
Hedo should have at least his first name already engraved on the trophy. Unless something happens it should most def. go to Hedo.
DeShawn was right about dudes beings scared to play him. At the same time, whenever they meet again he will have to back his words. I am happy he is putting that out there though, cause the NBA needs more healthy rivals.

YAll, go reread my post and then my post w/ the top 5.
Rajon was Sebastian Telfair’s backup last year (read that again!) and averaged: 6.5 ppg, 3.8apg, 3.7boards, and shot 42%
this year: 10.5 ppg, 5.1apg, 4.2 rpg, and 48% shooting while actually using the jumper he’s developed from “good god, please don’t ever shoot” to a decent J.
He’s the starting PG on the best team in the league and plays amazing D. He’s developed the jumper, started driving and finishing much better, and seems to have a better feel for the game.
DESPITE ALL OF THAT, ALL I SAID WAS THAT IN ANY OTHER YEAR HE MIGHT BE IN THE DISCUSSION (noting the words “In the discussion” not something like “runaway winner” or any shit like that) THIS YEAR HE’S NOT EVEN TOP 5. YOU’RE AN IDIOT YALL, SINCE THAT POST WAS BLATANTLY COMPLIMENTING HOW WELL EVERYONE ELSE WAS DOING, NOT TRYING TO INJECT RONDO INTO THE CONVERSATION. Despite that, Rondo will be the main reason the Celts fall in the playoffs this year. They will have to address the PG issue this summer, because their window of opportunity is closing fast. And no, Cassell is not the answer
March 14th, 2008 at 12:38 pm
Celts Fan says:
yes he (Cassell) is Juanito, for this year anyway. Rondo’s a perfect fit for what they need (he plays good D, doesn’t care if he doesn’t shoot in games, is fast as hell and is a good distributor.) His jumper’s coming along. Cassell is the answer this year (Rondo starts, Cassell closes) and Gabe Pruitt will get a chance to show he can be the backup, probably starting next year.
If you mean Rondo’s not the answer as the starter, you’re wrong. He’s DEFINITELY not the guy that should be closing out games at this point, but that’s exactly why Cassell is here.

first I really doubt thats the real gee since he usually has some catchy slogan lol but i’ll answer anyway.
Lebron james is overrated for a few reasons. 1 ) he hasnt won shit yet but hes still considered the chosen one. IF the pistons didn’t have one of the worst meltdowns since the tmac led magic, lebron still wouldnt have been in the finals. 2) until this year, he hasnt been consistant. Those stats you keep posting weren’t 24/7 and he still usually only has big games against bum teams. Even in the playoffs last year, his only real good game was that one game against the pistons. 1 game out the whole series. 3) anyone who says people don’t overhype every lil thing lebron does is a homer. every dunk is the best dunk ever, every pass is magic johnsonesque. Am i sayin he sucks? nah but he still hasn’t done as much as people give him credit and kobe is still the best at this point overall. The cavs are still like a #5 team in the east. THE EASTTT
doc, when did bron kill a healthy wizards team? if you mean the playoffs like 2 years ago before he got smacked in the second round, i dont think beatin the wizards by 1 point on a buzzer beatin layup where NO ONE even tries to defend you is killing someone.
March 14th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
j says:
bron you an idiot. “he hasn’t won shit yet” well he frickin got to the nba finals already! seriously, like he needs to have won 3 chips already for him to be ok with you.
also, EVERYONE gets big scores against bad teams - that’s what averages out bad games. he just does it better than everyone else you moron.
no one is saying every dunk is the best dunk ever, no one is saying every pass is the best pass ever, i just htink you’re oversensitive. who’s your boy? i never hear you saying you LIKE someone, i always just see you posting negative shit about yao, nash, lebron, etc. must be easy to point out everyone’s flaws without talking about your own team (btw the nets are terrible) or players (so is j kidd).
take your fake ass “i played lebron in high school and he ONLY put 40 points on me! and he couldn’t do a crossover behind the back loop the loop dribble into a windmill dunk in the game! what a scrub!” out of here.

what is with all the fags on this site, jeez lol. Maybe you should read a post every now and then before you post yaself too. Theres been tons of people I said I like. Dwight howard, tmac, kobe, Kg, Marion, duncan, j kidd (ya hes terrible jsut a hall of famer pg)..just as quick as i hate on nash, carter, yao etc..stop bein a bitch just cuz everyone dont like your players. too many fuckin homers.
“he hasn’t won shit” ya, your right, he got to the finals 1 fluke year. your right, he doesnt need any rings to prove himself just cuz of that. and your also right, tons of people put numbers up against bad teams…way to prove my point for me. Hes instantly better than iverson, melo, kidd, carter, kobe, amare, wade, paul piece, chris paul because he got to the finals once (and got DESTROYED) and puts up big numbers against bad teams.
and ya your right, i couldnt of played lebron in high school because he didn’t do any basketball camps or anything. He never left ohio to play another team. He never played guys like lenny cooke, deguan wagner didnt drop 30 on him at nike camp or got 44 put on his ass by carmelo. Hes just been undefeated since he came out the womb. Gotta love the homers who are soooo far on someones nuts that they completely wanna act like that player has no flaws. because nooo one on this site supposedly ever put lebron in the argument as a top 5 dunker in the league right? no ones said that? its just me bein sensative. so your right. lebron is the best dunker and has the sickest handle in the nba and doesn’t have to win another game to go down as the greatest of all time. there happy?
so instead of exaggerating and talkin out your ass how about you be a real basketball fan and stop dick riding.

Brown says:
Let’s not kid ourselves, LeBron took the Cavs to the finals, but the eastern conference last year was the worst any conference has been in the nba in a looooong time, maybe the worst ever. I think the Cavs would have lost that finals series no matter who they played from the west, that’s how bad the east was last year, and it’s not that much different this year, only by a little bit and most of that credit goes to the Celtics with the Magic factored in there somewhere. Every other team is the same or worse than they were last year.
The Cavs are not a championship contender, no matter how good LeBron is. Their “big trade” did little to improve their team, and they’ll likely get knocked out of the conference semi-finals.
LeBron may be overrated because he plays on a team without much talent around him, so he stands out that much more. He also plays mostly against the east’s inferior competition, where there are very few star players compared to the west.
If they judged overratedness by how many people are all up on someone’s nuts, then LeBron takes the cake by a landslide.

some of the worst comments ever says:
I dont understand how some of you can call LeBron overrated…he only averages 31 8 and 7 a game…and is the NBA’s leading scorer in the 4th…and the guy is only 23 and has been in the league 5 years…he is putting up #’s that only one or two people in the league have EVER done, but hes still overrated. He has carried his team through injuries the entire year…the MVP is between him and Kobe, yet he is still overrated…I dont think he has surpassed Kobe as the leagues best player but give him 6 years and lets compare them then when he is Kobes age and see how he compares…but calling him overrated may be the stupidest thing you can say, just sit back and watch a talent that we may never see again!
March 14th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
Azad says:
I agree with everyone that to call someone “overrated” you have to frame the discussion…probably if Caron Butler were putting up numbers like Lebron he wouldn’t get called overrated cause no one’s been hyping him up-
What are Lebron’s real overall weaknesses? Free throw shooting, jump shooting and maybe some questionable decision making every now and then…
Everyone’s going to miss some buzzer beaters-Lebron shouldn’t be below 80%, period on free throws though
If you are going to call him the next Jordan, he’s overrated…I think you could make a legitimate comparison between him and Kobe-Kobe’s slightly better now I would say but it’s at least an argument for Lebron being the best player in the league-
Now that Deshawn has talked shit, he had better be ready to face off the next time-Fact of the matter is, if Cleveland’s other guys would hit open jump shots, you could never collapse on Lebron and he would be even more dominant than he is now-
Also, on Lebron v. Kobe-what would Kobe have done with 3 years of Lebron’s supporting cast? I’m pretty sure he would have killed himself…Lebron has looked unhappy at times but the guy continually trusts guys who maybe shouldn’t be trusted, I think he plays the right way-He’s not MJ but he’s pretty incredible
March 14th, 2008 at 3:33 pm
Celts Fan says:
some of the worst comments ever, Over-rated means he’s more highly-regarded than he actually should be. I’m with you when you say, “I dont think he has surpassed Kobe as the leagues best player” and we’re definitely right (LeBron was guarding DeShawn last night, Kobe would’ve been guarding Caron Butler. When LeBron plays lock-down D against the other team’s BEST perimeter player, then the argument can be made that he’s passed Kobe.) but there are plenty of people that say he’s the best. If he’s really #2, but a lot of people say he’s #1, then that’s over-rated.

some of the worst comments ever says:
celts fan, if we are going to define overrated in those terms, then we might as well call the celts overrated now cause they won’t be #1 by the time June rolls around…but if LeBron does win the MVP, would that not make him the #1 player in the league? but I do agree, Kobe is the best player in the league for what he does on both ends of the court, and he is the closest player to Mike that we have seen…

Currently Lebron may be the best player in the league…if not he’s at least top 5….no one still has said how 30 7 and 7 is overrated. Forget about people calling him the chosen one and all that. I disagree that his stats haven’t been consistent this year. This year he’s been posting near triple doubles on everyone. It’s not easy to average 30. It’s not like you can score 45 against a sorry team and then be held to 15 against good teams you’ve got to be doing in the 25-35 range almost every game. If Lebron had a night when he “only” scored 15 it would be in the news…and to do that and average 7 assists over the season…c’mon that alone puts him in the top 5 this year. He’s not overrated this year he’s the real deal. Last year I might have agreed…but Lebron turned a corner when he beat the Pistons almost single handedly. I mean it was the Pistons…whether or not you think the East was weak…can anybody really say they expected Lebron and the Cavs to go into Detroit and Win 4 games agains Detroit. I’m not a homer, I’m not from Ohio, I’m from VA my dude should be AI…I’m a Laker fan. I have every reason to hate on Lebron…I am one of the biggest skeptics you will find around…but to say Lebron is overrated. There is no way anyone who is watching the games could say that. You can’t overrated 30ppg 7asg and 7rbg…and his team is winning with that cast of players. Consider last year Eric Snow started on the Cavs. Nah. Lebron is far from overrated.

Karizmatic - again, you have to frame the discussion. No one’s saying he’s not good, but OVER-RATED MEANS HE’S NOT AS GOOD AS PEOPLE THINK. HE’S THE SECOND (3rd at worst - TD) BEST PLAYER IN THE LEAGUE. WITH SO MANY PEOPLE SAYING HE’S THE BEST, THAT MEANS HE’D BE OVER-RATED. NO ONE’S SAYING HE SUCKS, JUST THAT HE’S NOT THE BEST DESPITE WHAT SO MANY PEOPLE ARE SAYING, AND THAT WOULD EQUAL OVER RATED.
and IF LeBron won the MVP this year (and if he does, I protest, that’s Kobe’s!) that would mean he was the most important to his team, not that he’s the best, otherwise, how do you explain the years MJ didn’t win the MVP?
some of the worst, the Celts very well could be over-rated. they had been most of the year, but w/ PJ and more importantly, Cassell, they very well COULD be the best team (we’ll see in June whether they have been over-rated or not!) That Cassell pickup I think vaunts us onto the list of top-tier teams that have a legit shot at a ring. If we’d have had to use Rondo as the closer point guard, I think we’d have had to drop a level to “teams that CAN win a ring, but need some luck to go their way.”
YAll - you’re a tool. I’m not gonna bother responding to your shit anymore. You find a way to turn every discussion into a juvenile name-calling session.
March 14th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
Celts Fan says:
oh, and Karizmatic, there’s no stat for defensive ability, which is the reason he’s not the best. LeBron’s AMAZING and will be the best soon enough, but let’s not rush it. If/when he can D up like Kobe, this discussion’s over (and he’s made HUGE strides these past few years, so it’s coming.)

Lebron is overrated because he walks and talks like he’s the g.o.a.t. but actually hasn’t proven anything yet. The thing with Kobe, Duncan, Jordan, Wade - all these guys were not as hyped as LBJ when they got into the NBA. All these guys EARNED the rep of arguably being #1, Lebron - while he is an amazing player, is trying so hard to live up to what is expected of him. He will only be King James when he wins the nba championship.
March 14th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
some of the worst comments ever says:
Alex, the thing with Kobe, Duncan, Wade and Jordan is they all played in a situation where they could win a title…who is the 2nd best player on the cav’s? LeBron has had nothing for a supporting cast around him in the 5 years that he has played…the best player to play with him is Z, and where does he sit amongst centres in the league? Kobe had Shaq, Wade had Shaq, Jordan had Pippen, and Duncan has had Robinson, the flop show, and Eva…Lebron has carried this franchise and made them a legitimate eastern conference threat on his own…when he has another player around him who can create and take some of the defensive pressure off of him, then we will see if he can EARN what these other 4 players have, an NBA title. For now, I don’t think anyone else could have done as good of a job as he has done with what he has around him.
March 14th, 2008 at 4:32 pm
karizmatic says:
Celts Fan, I understand your framing of the debate I just think it’s a false premise…to argue that LBJ is overrated would mean that there is no basis for the idea that he is the top player in the league this year. That premise is faulty, above all due to the fact that he has averaged 30 pts 7 asst and 7 rebs a game, which are ridiculous numbers for a season in any era. It is reasonable to argue he is number one…although it may not be factually correct…for LBJ to be overrated I am asserting that it would have to be unreasonable for people to think he’s number one. Therefore in my opinion your framing of the debate cannot stand. It can be logically argued that LBJ is the best in the league, although you may not share that opinion. The difference between 1 and 2 or 1 and 5 for that matter is too slim for you to say he’s overrated because you think he’s number 2 and others think he’s number one. I could argue soley on the basis of team composition and numbers that LBJ is better if I wanted to.

I mean seriously. lebron is overrated. and anyone who thinks this is untrue is smoking rocks.he’s not going back to the finals. overrated..good job deshawn for stating the obvious and not kissing his ass like everyone else.

Let’s put this in perspective and think in terms of video games (I know, I know, but just hear me out).
Kobe is all-world on both sides of the basketball, so he’s a 99. TD plays great on both sides of the ball, so he’s up there between 95-99 too. Same goes for KG. LeBron is dominant on offense, but his defense isn’t even close to what Kobe’s is. You can’t rate LeBron a 99 because he’s only great on one side of the ball. He’s a great rebounder, but he’s far from a lock-down defender.
I’m not saying LeBron is overrated, but at this point in his career, there’s no way you can say he’s a 99 because he’s only great on one side of the ball. He’s probably around a 95, give or take a couple points, but not 99.
The problem is that too many people think LeBron is a 99 because they’re only looking at the offensive side of the game and focusing on LeBron’s numbers, which are outstanding but they don’t reflect how he plays on defense. His lack of defensive greatness has to knock him down a couple points right now, even though he may develop into a good/great defender in the future.

Okay, first off who the hell is Steveson kidding, hes not even the 3rd best player on the roster for the wizards. Lebron is seriously not overratted. He is clearly not the best player in the league because that title belongs to Kobe, hands down he is the closet to Jordan. The MVP has to go to Kobe, hes lead his team and the addition of Gasol just put Kobe in the spotlight even more. Records speak for themselves and Kobe is the best player.
People brought up Lebrons numbers, just stop it cause his numbers are inflated because as you guys mentioned he has nobody else on his team, Jordan and Kobe have averaged numbers close to that with people sharing the load. In order of greatness is has to be Jordan, Kobe and then Lebron.

1. YES! finally someone stating what I have been trying to tell people since Lebron’s HS games were broadcasted on ESPN 5 yrs ago, Lebron James is overrated. I agree with Bron 42 he only scored 40 to 50 against weak teams, he has not done anything that I haven’t seen b4.
2. Kobe is also good, but closest thing to MJ? I think some of you are pushing it…..

mj all day says:
LEBRON JAMES this LEBRON JAMES THAT….what’s all the fuss about when mj came in the league back then when you guys were backstroking in your daddy’s nut sack…mj was criticized for being a ball hug and not playin D. kobe is the best player right now in the league but at the same time kobe has a superior experienced role player than lebron period. if u take lebron out of cleveland they are 11-71. kobe has phil jackson, lamar odom, paul gasol, bynum, fisher, need i say more or do you get the point bron has Big Z, gibson, ben wallace (defense) and that’s it.
Now adressing lebron being OVERATTED there is no such things as being overratted in sports maybe as far as marketing to sell product from a business point of view YES but as far as your profession numbers don’t lie for example the big ticket KEVIN GARNETT has always been a 20p 10r player back when he was with the wolves and is now doing the same thing with the celts same player different team same outcome but all u hear is kg this and kg that so correct me if i’m wrong isn’t that being overatted or is all good if your team has one the most game this season..
DESHAWN STEVENSON you got love him for is RAJA BELL imitations making a name for himself at lebron’s expanse
Deshawn stevenson
NO MVP STATUS
NO 6TH MAN STATUS
NO MOST IMPROVED STATUS
NOT 1ST 2ND 3RD 4TH OPTION STATUS
NO TALENT STATUS
and the sad part is a very good game for deshawn is 19pts that’s like a horrible game for lebron
