Bracketology: The Least Deserving

Remember in 2005 when George Mason made it to the Dance as an at-large bid after dropping to Hofstra in the CAA Tournament? Well many selection shows proceeded to fry the selection committee for giving them an 11-seed, or even for admitting them to the tournament at all. But after wins over Michigan State, UNC, Wichita State, and UConn, those announcers chewed their tongues during the Final Four. Though we’re prepared to accept the same fate if one of the following teams runs to the promised land, here is our breakdown of the least deserving teams in the bracket:

Saint Joseph’s: Though some of the Dime crew is partial to the Big Five, we saw St. Joe’s in the same place as Temple going into the A-10 final. Their ticket to the tournament would only be punched by winning their tourney. Their free-fall during early February in which they dropped five of seven conference games to Duquesne, Xavier, La Salle, Saint Louis and Temple should have doomed them. But the previous win over Villanova and then the A-10 tournament win over Xavier were enough for the committee. Plus, if the Hawks (10-seed) are going to be in, shouldn’t they be seeded lower than Temple (11-seed) - who beat them twice?

Arizona: What’s the chance the selection committee just wanted to watch the Wildcats’ exciting duo of Jerryd Bayless and Chase Budinger on the big stage? Their justification for slipping Arizona into the Dance despite everyone’s projections otherwise hinged upon Bayless’ presence. With Bayless and Nic Wise in the lineup, they were 16-6. But some of those 6 losses were Arizona’s worst: a 75-66 loss to Washington, a 70-58 beating at home from USC, and a 78-69 loss to Oregon.

Oregon: Speaking of which… It’s not so much that this 18-13 team was given a spot. It’s that they were given a 9-seed! Only one at-large bid went to a team with a worse record (Arizona - 19-14). Granted the Ducks played in the gold-standard Pac-10 - giving them points for strength of schedule - but they didn’t beat any of those West Coast big dogs: swept by USC, UCLA, Washington St. Even their only two impressive wins at Kansas State and at home against Stanford went to show that this team absolutely cannot deal with talented big men. Beasley notched 24 and 12, and Brook Lopez went off for 26 and 6.

Miami (FL.): Again, the Hurricanes are a tournament team, but they’re not a 7-seed. In their last game, they only posted 47 points against the snubbed Hokies. They were swept by Florida State this season. They split with Boston College and the laughing stock of the ACC, NC State. Their non-conference schedule was dismal, too - only beating Mississippi State. Saint Mary’s is the 10-seed that they’re going up against, and by all means that match-up should be flipped.

I really wanted to see Virginia Tech in after that game against North Carolina, they were real impressive and Deron Washington looks like a first rounder this summer. I would have liked to see Miami’s spot go to Tech.

The theing typed about Arizona is wrong, you guys need to get your facts straight. Arizona beat Washingon and USC with Wise and Bayless. The games they lost without at least one of those two were as follows. @Memphis Oregon @ASU without Bayless

ASU Stanford @Washingron UCLA USC @Oregon
