Skip (photo. Jack Thompson)Remember 4-5 years ago when Rafer Alston went from a journeyman to a legit NBA player? Balling with the Heat that year, Skip was able to shed the streetballer rep by protecting the ball and knocking down threes like he’d been watching Mark Price tapes. That version of Skip was the Skip that showed up against the Lakers yesterday — dropping 31 points on 8 threes as the Rockets pushed the win streak to 22. Despite the win, T-Mac didn’t really help his MVP case; he had a Kobe stuck to his shirt all night and only scored 11 points, doing his best work as a decoy when the double teams he drew created open shots for guys like Skip and Bobby Jackson (19 pts) … Kobe, meanwhile, was relatively locked down by Shane Battier, finishing with a below-average 24 points on 33 shots … You know what the critics will say: the Lakers didn’t have Pau Gasol or Andrew Bynum and the Rockets got lucky again. Well, consider that the Rockets didn’t have Yao (who’s more important to what they do than Gasol is to what the Lakers do) or Carl Landry, who’s been an invaluable contributor … Sign in the crowd: “2 Legit 2 Quit,” with the 2’s making up the #22. Stanley Kirk Burrell would have been proud … And if you’re a Rockets fan, you have to be pumped that your team can get zero points from T-Mac for an entire half and still build a 15-point lead against one of the best teams in the League … Why did George Karl have to go and release the dogs on his old team like that? The Sonics got drubbed in Denver, giving up 127 points by the end of the THIRD QUARTER and 168 for the game. Yes, that’s 168 points in a 48-minute basketball game. Crazy. Not even exaggerating, it was the worst we’ve seen any team play in any game this season. Forget about Denver’s starters, each of whom only played 20-something minutes — and Marcus Camby was able to put up a triple-double (13 pts, 15 rebs, 10 asts) in that time — the bench was playing like a championship squad. Seattle had Linas Kleiza (17 pts) looking like Andrei Kirilenko, Chucky Atkins (19 pts) looking like Baron Davis, J.R. Smith (19 pts) looking like Kobe, and Yakhouba Diawara looking like Caron Butler. Freaking Taurean Green was skipping around with the rock with all the confidence in the world, looking like he was back at Florida facing some sorry 16th seed … As the lead was climbing toward 50, Luke Ridnour darted into the lane and crashed into Smith. In full-on “I don’t wanna get hurt in this meaningless game” mode, J.R. shouted, “Damn, dude!” … With about a minute left and the Nuggets having already tied its franchise scoring mark for a regulation game, the crowd and the Nuggets’ starters were pulling for the bench guys to get one more bucket. Out in transition, J.R. got the rock on the wing and CRUSHED one on Saer Sene’s head, causing K-Mart and A.I. to bolt out of their seats and almost rush the court … Speaking of not even trying, the Kings somehow managed to be terrible for large chunks of a game and still win it at the end. In the first half against Toronto, the Kings looked like they were getting an early start on St. Patrick’s Day: they had like 15 turnovers in the half (five by Kevin Martin alone), they were missing layups left and right, they weren’t boxing anyone out (Rasho and Kris Humphries had multiple easy tip-ins), no one was guarding Jason Kapono (he was basically playing H-O-R-S-E), and Rasho and Andrea Bargnani each had two or three layups apiece because they were beating the Kings’ bigs down the floor. Despite all of that, Sacto kept a lead most of the time and won by six. Martin had 32 points … The Hornets were looking solid in Detroit for a minute until Jarvis Hayes checked into the game and went nuts. Jarvis knocked down 7 threes (6 in the second quarter) and brought the Pistons back to take the lead in an eventual blowout win. Hayes (29 pts) is one of those guys who’s not going to age — if he keeps that beard he’s got now, he’ll look exactly the same in 2018 … Yesterday’s game is an example of why teams like the Hornets usually don’t just go from Lottery to serious contender in one year. It’s a process that probably involves at least one postseason shellacking (see Orlando in ‘07) … Jason Maxiell’s block on Tyson Chandler to break up the always-automatic Chris Paul-to-Chandler alley oop was one of the best defensive plays you’ll see all year. The shorter Maxiell got way up on Tyson and his timing was perfect. And he didn’t touch him, either, getting all ball … Your #1-seeds for the Big Dance: Memphis, North Carolina, UCLA and Kansas. The biggest shocker: Arizona State getting left out of the field and Arizona getting in. ASU beat the ‘Cats twice during the season AND had a better record in the Pac-10, so how does that work? It sounds like the committee just didn’t want to snap Arizona’s streak of consecutive tournament appearances … Immediately after the brackets went up, we previewed the must-see 1st round games. If nothing else, check out the K-State (Michael Beasley) versus USC (O.J. Mayo) matchup in the Midwest region … It was Latino Day at Madison Square Garden, so before the Knicks and Hawks tipped off, the Knicks’ Spanish-language radio guy did the player intros. Even in Spanish, Isiah Thomas got booed. Apparently some of the names got lost in translation, because Atlanta’s #24 was introduced as “Marvin Smith” … In the Hawks locker room pre-game, there was a table set up in the middle of the room with nothing on it but lotion (multiple bottles), Dubble Bubble, cough drops, packs of Trident and packs of Extra gum. And even with all of that lotion available, color analyst Steve Smith (who looks like he’s about 6-10 up close) went and borrowed some from the Knicks City Dancers across the hall … Walt Frazier in the Knicks locker room: olive green suit, gold vest, green gators, and a plastic Home Depot bag with various stuff in it … We talked to Marvin Smith in the locker room pre-game, and he was excited about the Tar Heels doing damage in the tourney. While he was talking, Josh Childress leaned over and started yapping about Stanford, then Joe Johnson perked up from across the room with some Arkansas support. Al Horford and Mike Bibby — who own NCAA hardware along with Marvin — didn’t get involved … In the Knicks locker room Zach Randolph told us that no one on the team really talks a lot of smack about their college teams, and then next thing you know Nate Robinson and Mardy Collins damn near got into a shouting match over Washington versus Temple. “I’ve been to the 16, I know what I’m talking about. You went to Temple! Y’all suck!” Nate said … As for the game, the Hawks routed. In the third quarter Childress (22 pts, 9 rebs, 3 stls) was leading a 2-on-1 break against Fred Jones. Rather than make the easy play and dump it off to Johnson (28 pts, 11 asts), Childress tried to dunk on Jones and got clobbered. You have to wonder if Josh would have passed it were he not in a contract year. Just something to think about … As the fans were filing out of the Garden, the PA announcers hawked tickets for next week’s Miami game as, “The Knicks take on Shawn Marion and the Miami Heat.” Now if Matrix isn’t available for that one — he didn’t play in Miami’s blowout loss to the Mavs last night — what will the ad turn into? “Ricky Davis and the Miami Heat”? That’s just sad … We’re out like the Sun Devils …

The Maxiell block was overrated. To come from the weak side when Chandler never even noticed him? Chandler was too busy trying to catch the ball and dunk it all in one motion to focus on if there were any defenders in his way.
I would say it was “smart defense” by Maxiell, but not that amazing of a block. Now if it was Chandler coming at him with a full head of steam going to the hole, and then he blocked him? Then, we can say, “wow, what a great block.”

Hopefully Sam Presti can turn all those draft picks into solid players because that team is trash right now.
The Nuggets look to be making a serious push for the playoffs and that #8 spot is going to either them or G-State. I’d love to see the Warriors play the Rockets in the first round.

I like the fact that Stevenson said something to Lebron. Lebron’s had stuff handed to him on a platter the last 6 years or so, with no one challenging him.
Stevenson’s defense backed it up that game. Let’s see if Lebron can respond now. It’s about time someone stood up to Lebron, instead of customary ass kissing.
Denver can score all the points they want, because if they do make the playoffs, they’re not beating anyone since they can’t stop anyone. This isn’t the ’80s anymore where you can beat teams in the playoffs by outscoring them.
Houston looks like a TEAM. Guys are stepping up big time. Very impressive. Yea LA didn’t have Bynum or Gasol, but Houston didnt have Yao or Landry, who’s become very important to the Rockets.
No matter what, 22 wins in a row is extremely hard to do in the NBA, Adelman has done a good job keeping his team focused and concentrated to the game in front of them.

Part of Kobe’s hype is that he’s never been on a bad team. He’s been on a couple average teams, but he’s never been with a group like today’s Grizzlies or something of that calibur. Fans love to say that he’s doing it all, but the team he started with this year (Odom, Walton, etc) aren’t exactly some scrub D-League players.

What does it say when Yao can go down and the team plays better without him? People give McGrady shit cuz he’s never been out of the 1st round, but neither has Yao. Maybe they should consider trading him? His health issues have really hurt the team in the past number of years, and it’s not good when you can’t count on one of your best players to be there when it really counts.

Granted some of these houston fans are new, i know Iso, gee, and myself used to fuss back and forth with bron about yao and our rockets all day. Get your ish straight doc. honestly i’m thru talkin’ i will let my boys do it for me. 2 fingers and i’m out! H-town up!

SWAT, now you know how it feels to be a Spurs fan. And since you live in ATX, I will tell you we do support San Antonio the most (proximity), but I promise you we got the Rockets back next, over the Equestrians (which happens to be the gayest term possible for Mavericks). You know we gotta root for Texas over those Cali teams! Except, I must say Golden State is the most fun team to watch in the NBA.
Youngfed, Detroit looks really nice, Dumars has done excellent work building the squad. Nice rooks, Bringing in vets like Hayes, Ratliff, Dixon just in case…real solid team all around. I expect to see you guys in the finals, hopefully against my Spurs or SWAT’s Rox. Yeah I just hoped out loud for a Spurs-Pistons rematch, lol.
Cuz I don’t worship the Nike King or K-Hova like you brainwashable LA Sack Riders. Substance over style wins championships, some will never learn though. Major markets and advertising doesn’t get you ish, and neither does being flashy or doing alley-oops or having mad cornrows and tats. Of course if you like that stuff you can always watch Denver, Golden State, Phoenix, Lakers, Knicks, etc. and just enjoy the regular season!

Unless you are Knicks fan, just no enjoyment there to be had.

rangerjohn - Houston is the 4th largest city, there are tons of things to do when you team is losing. We even have a freaking hockey team! We have a team for every major sport & you expect people to keep coming out to see the Rockets @ .500?? I always said that they were better than .500 & finally they are! Only New Yorkers are dumb enough to keep buying tickets to see the Knicks
your right there are a ton of teams here in houston, which one of them has been playing since december? lastros dont start for almost a month, texans have been done since before the playoffs, dynamo world champs but different set of fans really, aeros ? um do they even play anymore? see the houston fans dont support their teams EVER UNLESS THEY ARE WINNING. FAIR WEATHER FANS. it kills me when i go to a rockets vs memphis and the stands are half full i nthe 2nd and 3rd quarters. the only teams the fans come out for are the spurs, lakers, mavs UNLESS the rockets have some silly win streak.
rockets have beaten a ton of teams sure great, but where do they go from here? can they play better? can anyone step up more? when they get to the playoffs will tracy average 48 minutes? see the other teams have room to go up, rockets are at their peek.
the stand will be empty again soon enough and i will be there with my 5 yr old enjoying a nice quiet rockets game because the fair weather fans will have left.

if you hate on soccer so much just realize that Earl the Pearl Monroe was a soccer player (just saw that on Black Magic) and that helped him become one of the all time greats. sport is sport. top athletes are great at multiple sports and use the other sports to get better in their own sport.
just sayin.
