Starting with Sunday’s Rockets/Lakers game (following Hornets/Pistons on the undercard), this is like Sweeps Week if you’re a hoop fan. There are a ton of big-time NBA matchups on tap, and coupled with the Big Dance starting on Thursday, you’d better make sure your cable bill isn’t past due … Last night’s marquee game had the Celtics traveling to San Antonio, and both teams seemed determined to give a win away. Manu Ginobili was eviscerating everyone that Doc Rivers put in front of him, from Paul Pierce to Tony Allen to Sam Cassell. Spurs color analyst Sean Elliott put it this way: “I don’t want to be mean-spirited, but I can guard Manu better than Sam Cassell right now.” … Ginobili (32 pts) helped the Spurs build a 20-point lead in the first quarter, but the C’s turned up the defense and kept chipping away, eventually making it a back-and-forth contest in the second half. With seven seconds left in the third quarter, the Celtics were down two and got a gift-wrapped call that gave Doc a chance to draw up a play. His response? Have Rajon Rondo (20 pts, 6 rebs, 3 stls) go 1-on-1 without so much as a pick being set, leading to a missed layup … In the fourth quarter, the vets took over. Robert Horry did what Robert Horry does and Tim Duncan turned into a shot-blocking machine to put the Spurs in control for a minute. But then Pierce (22 pts, 8 rebs, 5 asts) and Cassell (17 pts) started getting buckets to bring Boston back. With 46 seconds left, Sam hit a triple with Manu in his face to put the C’s ahead. Cue the modified, PG-13 version of the Big Balls Dance. Eventually it all came down to Boston inbounding under San Antonio’s hoop with a few seconds left and a two-point lead. Brett Favre-ish bad pass by Kevin Garnett, which Bruce Bowen was able to reel in for a “Havlicek steals it!” moment, but Big Shot Rob’s fadeaway three was off … Despite a 21-point, 8-board stat line, KG struggled in crunch time. On top of the intercepted pass that almost cost Boston the game, Garnett was being purposely left wide open by Duncan and kept bricking jumpers that he seemed hesitant to take … Meanwhile, Cassell did exactly what Boston brought him in to do, but at the same time you can see the chemistry issues developing already. Ray Allen’s absence (ankle) gave Doc one less guy to deal with last night, but those times when Cassell and Rondo were both on the floor and couldn’t settle on who was the point guard stood out. Sometimes Rondo would come to the ball after a defensive rebound and Sam would ignore him and bring it up himself … The Bulls announcers were beside themselves towards the end of Bulls/Hornets because their team just didn’t know what to do with Chris Paul. Putting the capper on an 24-4 run to close out a game where the Bulls had a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter, CP was weaving through the D, getting into the lane at will and either dropping floaters over the bigs or feeding his teammates for easy buckets. One announcer stammered, “He’s digging and dagging and spinning!” Chris finished with 37 points and 13 assists … No Jason Maxiell in the way this time, leaving CP and Tyson Chandler to hook up on a couple of sick alley-oops … Drew Gooden is looking downright biblical these days. How long is this bet with DeShawn Stevenson going to last? Because we could have sworn we saw a bird fly out of Drew’s beard last night … As the Raptors were on their way to getting blown out in Utah, T.J. Ford flipped his lid. On one play T.J. went to the rack holding the rock like a football in his right hand and clearly pushed off with his left like he was stiff-arming a linebacker. The refs called the offensive foul and T.J. went berserk, screaming “That’s bull$#@&!” over and over again. Jason Kapono could barely hold him back and Ford got ejected. From our Toronto readership we get the impression that T.J. isn’t exactly a fan favorite up there, and last night’s incident isn’t gonna help … Deron Williams put up 21 points and a very human 4 assists in the win, and Carlos Boozer had a 13-10 double-double while the Jazz won their 19th straight game at home … Between Indiana’s yellow unis, New York’s green/orange unis, the half-empty and quiet arena, and the quality of the teams on display, Knicks/Pacers was almost impossible to watch. If you sat through the whole thing we commend you, ’cause you’re a true fan. Mike Dunleavy torched NYK again for 36 points in a Pacers win … Weird stat of the night: Orlando shot better from three-point range than it did inside the arc in beating the Cavs. LeBron scored 30, but his squad got their eyes shot out — and J.J. Redick (naturally) didn’t have anything to do with it. Everyone else from the expected (Rashard & Hedo) to the unexpected (Mo Evans) was knocking them down from deep … NBA TV’s Rick Kamla had this call on a play where Jameer Nelson scored an and-1 over Anderson Varejao: “Jameer says, ‘You’re Brazilian, I’m American, I’m better than you on this play.’” What? … Corey Maggette had another monster scoring night, dumping 34 on the Wolves in a loss. Why do we get the feeling Corey is headed for a Bonzi Wells-like free agent experience? He’s throwing up these big numbers and probably thinking he’s gonna get broke off, but we can see it playing out where Corey finds out he’s not worth as much as he may think … Getting ready for the Big Dance, yesterday we broke down the best first-round matchups (O.J. vs. Beasley), the least-deserving teams that did get in (including two Pac-10 squads), and the biggest snub of all … Late last night one of the FOX Sports channels re-ran one of the Florida state high school championship games, and one school had t-shirts printed up with the slogan: “Always heated and undefeated.” … We’re out like the real Big Balls Dance …

CP3 is really making noise for that MVP, if they finish a top the West u gotta give it to him I think.
Spurs-Celts would be a good finals. They shut Duncan down (at least offensively).
Spurs better watch out, they can fall out real quick in that West. Dallas is playing better, so is Pheonix and Denver for that matter.

The Spurs should have some serious concerns about their interior defense. They are getting killed in the paint with either drive and scores or drive and dishes. I think the age is becoming a factor and they aren’t rotating like they used to. 6 outta 7 games lost…in March?…that’s not good for the champs. Aside from the Lakers, I think it’s funny that the top teams last year, PHX, DAL, and SA are now at the bottom of the heap after some trades that were more like panic trades than anything else. And…..CP3 for MVP…the kid deserves it after last night.

For the most part, Raptors fans want Ford out of town on the next thing smokin’. Last night’s tirade may have been the final straw. I don’t understand why the Raps haven’t sat his ass on the bench permanently. He does more harm than good when he’s on the court, but that’s been going on for over a year now and people are finally getting fed up with him. If Colangelo can turn him into something useful (i.e. a rotation player), the Raptors faithful will be appeased.
There are a select few who still have faith in him, but for the life of me I can’t understand why.

Mike Brown has no idea who he should play and for how long. The trade looks like it worked better for Chicago than Cleveland - Bulls are still losing but they are fighting now and Drew Gooden is playing like a starting PF. Need to ship heinrich and start BG and LH in the backcourt.
Speaking of little point guards that need a reality check - what’s up with Jameer Nelson and his 16% shooting on 12 shots. Jameer: You have THREE all star level frontcourt players who are 6-10 or taller who can score at will - WTF are you doing.
The 8th seed in the East is now Atlanta’s to lose but it still looks like Bibby hasn’t figured out his role on the team…might be an indication of poor coaching but for now he like Jekyll and Hyde - looking for his shot one night and looking to make plays the next - MIKE - - this team needs you to make plays.

Lebron looked like he was going to go off yesterday…on his teammates.
There was one possession where Delonte waved everyone off like he had an idea of the play he wanted to run, except he didn’t. He just dribbled around the arc, the ball found it’s way to Pavlovic’s hand with a second left on the 24. Luckily he nailed the shot and bailed them out, but Lebron was staring daggers through Delonte it looked like.

Celtics/Spurs seemed like a good game. I didn’t get to watch it (st pattys action all over the place), but in the highlights, it seemed like Kevin Garnett is shook down the stretch and doesn’t look to shoot. Is that really the case? And where was Ray Allen?
Chris Paul is just sick. No one can stop/guard him. And he seems to have a good game EVERY game. Is he on the Olympic team? If not, Chauncey Billups should step down and let CP3 get his spot.
Between Drew Gooden and DeShawn Stevenson….what is the actual bet? They’re growing their beards for what reason? Just a financial money bet?
TJ Ford sucks. He’s quick and thats it. Toronto should bring back my man Andre Barrett; whattup Dre?!!?
Who is having a better/worst career: JJ Redick or Adam Morrison?
Corey Maggette has no shot to get a $70 million contract. As soon as he signs in the off season, he’s gonna put it in reverse-reverse and average 11 games played per season.

spurs-celtics. would be a fine championship, but the spurs need to worry about getting back on track in a hurry. their interior D IS their latest problem, but they have also lost a lot of games in the 4th quarter lately. is it Pop’s rotation? are they missing brent barry in the 3rd, to spell manu or bowen or what? top 7 teams out west are in a virtual dead heat. 2.5 games? are you kidding me? this is outrageous. and dont even let denver get hot. they are agonizingly inconsistent, but if they catch fire at the right time…
Chris Paul is doing so much more with less than any of the other point guards. He’s really impressive. I love how he just doesn’t panic with the ball and seems to be under control everywhere on the court. between him and kobe, whoever has the best record, they gotta get mvp.

YAll. If Dirk was clutch, why’d he, a 90% FT shooter, miss 3 different FTs in close games in the last few minutes of the Finals a few years ago? Dude’s good, but he isn’t clutch.
Also, I love Pierce, but he’s hit most of his game winners cuz he was the only option for years. He’s clutch, but he’s not top 5 clutch.
Myrie, over the past decade, it’s been PROVEN that just being more athletic in international ball doesn’t cut it. Besides being a better athlete than Chauncey, what is Dwyane better than him at? Chauncey’s a much better defender, can play the point (much better than Dwyane can) and the 2 (Dwyanes better in the NBA, I don’t know that he’s a much better 2 in the Olympics like he would be in the NBA), and is a MUCH better shooter. Remember, the NBA game and the international game are VERY different and I feel like Chauncey’s game translates better. Plus, we need more shooting and Chauncey provides that. I’m not saying it should come down to just those 2, I was just making a point that I’d take Chauncey over Wade for the Olympics for what they both can bring to the team and the “needs” the team has compared to their individual strengths.
That’s completely irrelevant though, since Dwyane’s a captain, so he’s obviously on the team if healthy…

Clutch List?
1) KB24
2) LeBron
3) Butler - before his injury
4) Baron - time and again he does it for them
5a)Deron Williams - Clutch, don believe it? check out last years playoff stats. He’s the next Billups, with better scoring arsenal, better passing, better true point skills
5b) CP3 - Just wait till he gets a supporting cast better than what he’s got right now.
can see Brandon Roy get on this list as soon as next year

No way LBJ makes 2 on the top 5 clutch list. Horry is more clutch than LBJ, at least for the moment. Gil although he has been out this year, should be in this list.

YAll, if Dirk gets the ball against Boston with the game on the line, I’ll already know we won.
Just putting this out there, but Robert Horry has to be included on all clutch lists until the day he retires. Who cares how old he is. The only question is, would you be terrified if he had the ball and an open look with the game on the line? Thought so.
