Wednesday’s big story was Allen Iverson’s return to Philly. (If you haven’t seen the special RBK kicks A.I. wore for the occasion, click HERE.) Very cool scene as the sold-out arena showed A.I. lots of love during intros and he returned the favor, coming pretty close to tearing up. The closest thing we’ve seen to it recently was when KG went back to Minneapolis earlier this year. But even that didn’t quite measure up, ’cause although both guys pretty much owned and defined their respective cities for a decade, you can’t really compare the passion of Philly fans to Minneapolis … Right before tip A.I. and Mo Cheeks shared a big hug — something of a surprise if you know their history. And after that, Iverson proceeded to drop buckets on Willie Green’s head, finishing with 32 points, 8 dimes and 3 steals … With the game tied in the final seconds, Andre Iguodala hit Sam Dalembert on an alley-oop where Iguodala was falling down with his back to the basket and tossed it over his shoulder to Sam for the finish. We would say it was a fluke, but we actually saw those two hook up for a very similar play in a game against the Warriors a few months back … Crazy dunk by Carmelo (26 pts) over Andre Miller where ‘Dre pulled a Damon Jones move; jumping with ‘Melo at first before changing his mind in mid-air and ducking for cover … As you know, Kobe graces the cover of Dime #39, which you can still find on newsstands. We shot Kobe’s cover earlier this season when the Lakers traveled to Philly, which was where he insisted on being photo’d. Later this morning come back to DimeMag.com and check out the behind-the-scenes video … We said in yesterday’s Smack that it would be interesting to see how the Rockets responded to the end of their 22-game win streak. And last night? They responded like a beaten-down group, getting routed in New Orleans while failing to crack 70 points. Can’t you just see Houston losing like six or seven in a row now and dropping to the bottom of the Western Conference playoff picture? … And remember what we said about David West trying to make a statement. He put up 23 points and 11 boards and looked like he was gunning for 40; he took 18 shots (not all top-of-the-key jumpers) and made 13 trips to the line. Who’s the superstar now, Skip? … Fitting that in the one game where Dikembe Mutombo brings some offense (10 pts, 13 rebs, 2 blks), the rest of the Rockets can’t score … The Cavs beating the Pistons at home isn’t a huge surprise. The Cavs beating the Pistons pretty thoroughly while out-executing and out-hustling them down the stretch is. It’s become clear that Detroit can’t just stick Tayshaun Prince on LeBron (30 pts, 7 rebs, 6 asts) anymore and leave him alone. Ever since last year’s playoffs, ‘Bron knows he can torture Prince whenever he wants. Before the next postseason meeting, Flip Saunders should study the ‘07 Finals tapes and see what the Spurs did to LeBron before Mike Brown decided to put him in the post … One of our in-house Sonics fans, Associate Editor Austin Burton, has been saying for a while that the Sonics should adopt the Suns’ style of play since their personnel supports it and they always seem to at least hang in there with Phoenix when they play each other. Seattle was right there deep into the second half and could have taken the game, but simply couldn’t get stops when they needed to and couldn’t make shots when they needed to. But you could see where they might mirror the Suns. Luke Ridnour and Johan Petro were killing on the same pick-and-roll that Nash and Amare run; on one play Petro rolled to the basket and crammed on Amare, who didn’t even try to play D. On the next possession they ran the same play and Petro had a wide-open jumper in the paint … In the first half the Suns rolled out a lineup of D.J. Strawberry, Leandro Barbosa, Raja Bell, Boris Diaw and Brian Skinner. They proceeded to execute the worst possession we’ve seen in a while, working the 24-second clock into single digits with hardly anyone taking a dribble and everyone afraid to shoot. Skinner let the shot clock run out when he got tied up by Kevin Durant and fell down holding the ball … On a critical second-half possession, Donyell Marshall jacked a three with about 20 seconds showing on the shot clock. Can they just cut him? … E-mail sent during Hedo Turkoglu’s 39-point explosion against the Wizards: “Hedo clearly sold his soul to the devil last summer.” But with Orlando down one in the final seconds, Hedo (or “Tito” according to DeShawn Stevenson’s post-game interview) shook free for an open, albeit off-balance, layup that he couldn’t convert … The Heat are just comically bad. Last night they scored 54 points in a loss to the Raptors, never cracking 20 in a single quarter and scoring a total of 19 in the second and fourth quarters. What other ugliness was there? How about 25 percent shooting from the field (20-for-78), a negative-15 margin on the boards and the fact that Chris Quinn had to play all 48 minutes … Chris Bosh returned from his knee injury, putting up 8 points and 8 boards in 22 minutes … As if attendance isn’t enough of a problem in Miami, what is the sales strategy now? You’ve got fair-weather fans in a transplant city and you’re supposed to to convince them to shell out for a team with the worst record in the League, no superstar, and one All-Star whose talent is only truly appreciated by true hoopheads. If the coach doesn’t even wanna stick around — and he get PAID to be there — why would a fan give up their money to show up? … ESPN Classic was running a marathon of NCAA championship games, and during the day we caught the end of the 1989 Michigan/Seton Hall game. You know the one: Glen Rice dropped buckets all over the place, and Rumeal Robinson made two free throws with 3 seconds left to give the Wolverines the title. But watching it yesterday, we realized how horrible the foul call that sent Rumeal to the line was. Seriously, he was barely bumped by the Seton Hall defender, if he was touched at all. It wasn’t just one of those calls that you don’t make at the end of a game; it was a call that you don’t make, period. We’ve seen more physicality in games of tag. And amazingly, no one seemed to make a big deal out of it. As one of the Dime crew noted, “If that had happened today, P.J. would be on the court choking the ref.” And can you just imagine, given the stakes, how Mike D’Antoni would have reacted? Or is Rasheed had been the one whistled? … We’re out like Donyell …

Interesting poll on Dime today. I’d say as of now the Nets look like they got the best end of the Kidd trade - the clincher being that Vince seems to be “Vinsantity” again and not “Wince”. Last night he looked like an all star giving Joe Johnson 39pts, 10reb, 8 ast and D.Harris looked solid beside Vince.
The Sixers trade of Iverson was more of a “it’s best for both of us” situation and that is true for the sixers now. Andre Miller just fits better with this young team and did a nice CP3 impression last night with 28pts and 12 assists. Sixers are making the playoffs.
On the other hand - Atlanta’s playoff quest looked like it was fading last night with Mike Bibby jacking eight 3’s (8!) and missing 7. MIKE - please make some passes and stop jacking shots. damn.

Nuggets are hopeless they are no different from the Warriors all offense no D, well except the warriors are actually in the playoffs. The game was definitely hard fought but I’m glad Philly won still, they deserve it with the way they been playing lately.
And seriously is the reason Stat refuses to play D because he is traumatized and terrified of another knee injury b/c that can be the only logical reason for a man of his build to slack so much. he could be so much better if he just upped his defensive game, in fact so could that whole damn team. It’s actually funny he said in an interview how hes hurt no one is mentioning him for MVP even though hes got player of the week twice in one month or some shit. and how he only gets love from his team mates and coaches but no one else. Well guaranteed if he was even half as good on D that he is on offense he might get a consideration, but he can’t really compare himself to Duncan or KG until he fixes that shit. Doesn’t he realize this or does Mike D’Antoni just blow his head up with ridiculous things like MVP talks and not mention to him he’s a damn 6′11 PF not a shooting guard and points shouldn’t be his biggest concern on the court. This is what would actually give them a chance at a ring, if he and shaq got their D on lock but Shaq is doing his best while Stat just don’t give a fuck.
And Miami is just so ridiculous right now, they make the Bulls look like a championship team, hell they even make NY look alright, and this is even with Dwade (who probably did come back too early from his injury so he gets a minor pass).

They may have won last night but how can you say 76ers are better? It is a shame that AI left Philly cuz the East sucks besides the top couple teams and is much easier. Philly should have made moves like the Celtics did, bring in more help for your best player not trade away your best player.
Nice to see AI get cheers too, it was a nice moment and both sides came out looking good after a bad situation. As much as many hate you have to admit he always gives 100% in a game and that deserves alot of respect. In sports today there are too many just collecting their checks.

@J
I don’t think anyone was saying that Philly is a better team than Denver - just that they are better-off without Iverson.
AI is a great player - probably a top 10 all time guard (cue the list postings) but his style and career is not a good fit for a team that is still a few years away from being competitive again.
Top 10 guards (SG or PG - all time)
1. MJ
2. Magic
4. Kobe
5. Oscar
6. Gervin
7. Frazier
8. The logo
9. Iverson
10. Isiah
March 20th, 2008 at 8:47 am

Uh J, the Celtics had more young, “cost-effective” talent roster spots 5-10 than the Sixers last year. Jefferson sold McHale on the deal. The Sixers had no one like that. Plus I don’t doubt McHale helped out Boston a bit.
Um, the Sixers are better because they play more of a team game now, it’s not let’s just sit back and watch AI anymore. In the last week and a half they’ve knocked off San Antonio, Detroit(in the D), Chicago(in Chicago and coming off their most impressive win of the season), and now Denver.
If you can’t see that this Sixers team is better then you should be in those For Eyes commercials.
A couple great moments last night as a Sixers fan and as an AI fan. Brought back a lot of memories, mostly good.
Sixers are on a nice roll, and I guess could be considered as the hottest team in the league with Houston losing two in a row.

Very good assessment of Stat in the earlier post. I can’t stand a player who runs his mouth about wanting to be mentioned as a MVP candidate as the 5th seed in the west. Hello! You are not even the best player on your team! The suns will never go anywhere as long as Amare refuses to play defense. Just because you can dunk over everyone does not make you the best player in the league. Hell, he doesn’t even play with the best PG anymore. CP murdered the Suns last time they played. That would be a nightmare first round matchup for the Suns.

Love AI. Glad to see the outpouring last night… but here’s my question: When AI came into the league, and even now for that matter, critics always got onto him about dribbling the ball too much and not getting his teammates involved. Even the great Barkley said that Allen’s assist numbers aren’t true assists because he dribbles the ball till the end of the shot clock and then dishes to someone to shoot. Essentially, he gets lucky. I don’t agree with that, but it’s what has been said.
So now you got CP3 up for this MVP talk. Have you watched him play?? I was amazed… he dominates the rock on offense. During several possessions he pounded the ball into the ground cutting back and forth until he pulled up on an ill advised fadeaway. The shot fell and the announcers praised him. Another effort resulted in the same treatment of the ball by CP3 and then a lob to Chandler… and more praise from the announcers. The ENTIRE game went like this.
So here’s the question: What makes Chris Paul so different than Allen Iverson? Why do people think he is so much better of a player and deserves to be in the MVP race in his second year? I’m not hating on Chris Paul at all. I’m curious is all… any thoughts??

Kobeef, I tend to disagree with some of the orders on your list (by the way, you went 1, 2, 4!) but where you have AI on that list is probably about right, though I think it’s blasphemous to put Kobe over Oscar right now (give it a few years, when Kobe wins another chip or 2 as the BEST player on his team, then you can make that argument, but Oscar was AMAZING. Kobe’s not quite there yet, though, it is a matter of “yet” I think, unless they don’t win a chip with this team - I think they get a few assuming they keep that core group - or he gets severely injured in the next few years and can’t keep playing.)

It is a VERY hard list to create. I would honestly rate Iverson above Kidd on an all-time guards list but leaving Nash off is tough. CP3 and Deron are too young to call all time greats so for now they are tough to leave off the top 10. Reggie Miller? Ray Allen? Great, yes but not tp 10.
When you watch Iverson in his prime (Philly vs LA championship year) it is easy to see that he is a once in a lifetime type player. He may have the best handle and fastest moves of any player, ever.

The Nuggets beat the Celtics, Cavs, Phoenix, San Antonio, Toronto in the past month too. They are 12 games over .500 now. This year is crazy and there are still 14-15 games left. Alot can happen in that time.

Get used to it ATL fans. I live in Sac so I got to see all of Mike’s run here. So let me break it down to you:
If Bibby’s not making his shot he is useless. He’s never been a huge assist guy. Most years he averaged around 5. Think about that. 5 assists with guys like C-Webb, Vlade, Peja, B-Jax. I never understood how a PG with so many scorers around him couldn’t average more than 5 dimes.
He Doesn’t rebound AT ALL. I know he’s not really expected to. But if you’re not really contributing offensivly then you got to help it in other areas. He doesn’t eve try to grab a board.
He is a terrible defender. This guy gave up tripple doubles to the likes of Troy Hudson. Hell..Tony Delk got 50 on him. It’s really obvious how bad of a defender he was now with Beno starting. Don’t get me wrong, Beno will never make an All-NBA defensive team but his decent D is a HUGE upgrade.
But hey you’ll be loving him when he makes 5 of 8 from 3 which he will do from time to time.

March 20th, 2008 at 12:10 pm
JA says:
After watching last night’s Raps-Heat mess, it made me think more about teams tanking games. Take the Matrix for example. Over the last 7.5 seasons (including this season prior to the trade), Shawn Marion has missed 12 games. Total. That’s roughly 1.6 missed games/year.
And now with the Heat? In 19 games while with the Heat, he’s already missed 3 of them. A quick calculation will put that at around *8 times* his average over the past 7.5 seasons.
So here’s the question: as a player, would you sit like Marion (and others) due to “injury” on a sinking ship, or would you have pride in yourself and your team and sack-up like Elton Brand - even going as far as arguing with the coaching staff to let you back out there?

I am fairly convenced that the Nuggets have set out this season to make Iverson look like an @sshole. Can’t even come through for that guy in a win on his return. SMH, anyhow……
Regardless what the usual haters are on here talking about, its more then obvious what Iversons means to Philly. And while some Philly fans said they are glad he left, there are way more that wished he would have stayed. After watching the reception he got lastnight and the way that he was acting lastnight made me think that AI may have just, for a minute, wished he would have just stayed in Philly….because ultimatly the ball was in his hands (no pun intended).
I agree with “J”, I wish they would have made atleast a few proper trades for that guy to succeed. He’s doing fine in Denver, and dispite them being in 9th, the team has a good record, but AI will always be Philly. Point blank. And, yes, Philly is playing decent ball right now….thats about it. I watched them lastnight and their style seemed to be just as crazy as some profess Denvers or Golden States to be, they are just trying to get it done. So quit pumping it up to make it bigger then what it is. They are barely .500 in a weak conference. And have a long way to go. I love how people jump on and off bandwagons, next year if the team starts off poorly (like they did this year) folks will be right back on here talking about how garbage they are, which is what the majority of us already had known. Whenever you have AI on your team it makes your team dangerous…so yes, Philly could still have used AI. They would have a way better chance in the playoffs then what they do now. The same people talking crazy are the same people that don’t want to see Iverson succeeed anyway and will hate regardless.
And whoever “todd” is is an Iverson hater, he always has something crazy to say about that guy…ignore him.

Miami is a joke just like the Knicks. Some pretty good players. Just no type of coaching whatsoever.
