Today’s Philadelphia Daily News has the story of how Derrick Coleman got hurt on Spike TV’s “Pros vs. Joes“:
DC set a “Pros vs. Joes” first by becoming the first Pro to succumb to an injury by a Joe!
For those of you who have yet to see the exhibition on Spike TV, “Pros vs. Joes” pits ordinary guys from across the country against former pro athletes in different events to see if the Joe has what it takes to defeat the Pro, who is out to humiliate the Joe at all costs. The Joes compete in brackets, and the last Joe standing wins a $100,000 prize.
OK, now that you have a background of what the show entails, let me tell you how DC made a fool of himself on national TV.
Again.
It was a contest tailor-made for the 6-10, 270-pound Coleman. All he had to do was box out a pair of Joes, who each had 10 tries to pull down as many rebounds as they could and make an outlet pass. The Joe with the most boards moved on to the final round. So DC worked the first Joe, allowing just two boards, and the show took on its usual premise proving that the pro athlete - even has-beens - still reign supreme over average athletes.
But against the second Joe, in true DC fashion, Coleman came down awkwardly, tweaking that familiar knee we have all come to loathe so well, rendering him unable to continue. This set up a first for “Pros vs. Joes”, a show well into its sixth season.
Lucky Joe No. 1 got a second chance and was pitted against Joe No. 2. Again, first one with 10 rebounds wins.
In the battle between the two, Joe No. 2 earned the win over his counterpart and completed his record-setting acheivement for a chance at the grand prize.
Here’s the best part: After further review of the incident (gotta love TiVo), it was determined that DC’s injury occured at the hands of a Joe named Mike Kotsch.
