Jerry Sloan Has No Love for Houston
Don’t count Jerry Sloan among the Rockets’ bandwagoneers. While he concedes that their 22-game roll is “difficult,” he thinks it’s something that everyone is capable of.
“It doesn’t astound me at all,” he said. “That’s what you can do if you pull together. If you totally commit yourself to playing together, all these teams have the ability to do that.”
“There’s a lot of things,” he said, “that pull people apart. ‘I’m not getting to play enough,’ or ‘I’m not getting enough shots.’ When you quit worrying about all those things and just go play the game, then you’ve got a lot of chances to win every time you step on the floor.”
That’s some good, healthy hating from Jerry. But in his defense, the Jazz were the last team to beat Houston. Thus, he has some ground to stand on. In that January 27th contest, Kyle Korver sunk two late triples as part of a 17-point night to top the Yao-less Rockets 97-89.
Sloan is no dummy. The Rockets won’t get a chance to use his comments as fuel for their fire until they come to EnergySolutions on April 14th.

Jerry is wrong….not all teams can do that. Ask the Heat or Knicks. Heh.

Prof. TX says:
Aww, poor Jerry still doesn’t have a ring and it looks like he never will. All this quote amounts to is “I could do that if I wanted to, but it’s my players’ fault that I haven’t.” Notice how he leaves out the part about how it’s the coach’s job to pull a team together that way. He can’t expect to just complain about his players and expect them to gift-wrap twenty wins in a row for him.

All teams are capable, but all haven’t done it. A good coach, utah is the perfect place for him.

Maybe I read that differently, but that sounded pretty complimentary about the way the Rockets have rallied around each other and played unselfishly to me.

what a dumbass, it takes a lot more than just “pulling together”, you need talent and knowledge of the game. no matter how well a team plays together if they don’t have proper talent and some thorough leadership theres no way you can do that, otherwise it would’ve been done by now many times, by many teams. For example: the spurs, the pistons, the lakers back in the shaq days, etc. he sounds like a bitter old man whose viagra ain’t working for him.
March 18th, 2008 at 8:39 am
word says:
i don’t think he’s complimenting them it sounds like he’s discrediting them and basically saying they aren’t special and need to stop thinking their the shit b/c of what they’ve achieved since “anbody can do it”. obviously anyone can but they haven’t and probably won’t again. I doubt we will see anyone win 23 games in a row anytime soon even if they do “pull together”. he just mad cuz he couldn’t achieve that if he tried his damndest. i guess his team can’t get it together according to him or they be the ones with 23 in a row.

Jerry sound like he’s been sipping that 100%proof haterade. He’s just mad his team can pull it together to win 22 in a row. Sorry Jerry you better hope you don’t meet CP3 & his squad come first round.

Sounds like both to me. A little earned respect and a little bit of hate.

The way I read it, Jerry seems to be hating on his own players in a non obvious way. Almost like saying “If AK would quit whining about shots, and some of these other fools would quit whining about playing time, I would have 30 wins in a row!”

how can u disrespect a 22gm win streak?
i wonder when the old lakers were at #22, if coaches around the league were hating.

Check the Jazz against New Orleans, Utah owns CP3 and the Hornets. I’m sure he’d love to meet them in the first round.

funny how there are so many interpretations of the same quote. i took it as both complimentary of houston’s players for being unselfish and also a little backhanded on his own team, maybe sending a little message to get them to play together down the stretch.
and there’s no question he’s a good coach. at the rate coaches get fired these days for simply breathing wrong, he’s been at Utah forever. the hate is unwarranted.

2 Easy says:
Straight up he seems like hes hatin a tad and givin an even smaller amount of respect. He realized that the Jazz are damn near invinceble at home so he believes they could have done this streak too if only they could win on the road and pull together. Well hopefully this motivates everyone from the Jazz to the Rockets to the other 9 teams, I CANT WAIT FoR THE PLAYOFFS! UPSET CITY

A little hatin’ here, but cmon y’all, you can’t disrespect Sloan. He’s been coaching the Jazz for, what, 130 years? And what did that produce? 2 Finals and countless Playoffs appearances. How many coaches in the history of the L can write that in their resumes?

because it doesn’t astound him, it’s hating? this is a full-on compliment to the Rockets. Sloan doesn’t understand what “between the lines” is, so take everything he says at face value. he’s a straight shooter, for better or worse. If he were hating, he would say “it’s not that impressive.” This isn’t something to read into

shourjo says:
I totally agree. This is more about Jerry taking a shot at his players, among others in the league who he deems to have an insufficient commitment to playing the right way. This isn’t really about the Rox at all.

wow, “go bang a mormon”, “viagra” comments . . . sure, he hasn’t won a ring yet as a coach, but he does have a pretty good winning % and over 1k wins.
just because he’s too oldschool to kiss another teams’ ass he’s torched by you guys (who have never coached one nba game, let alone won over 1k of them).
i’m not a fan of his in-game adjustements, or his way of handling certain players, however he is a talented coach who deserves respect.
and for what it is worth, he was trashing HIS own team with these comments. that’s how jerry works. he never says anything bad about other teams / players / coaches. stop looking for reasons to hate someone.
btw. if utah plays the hornets or the rockets in the playoffs i’m pretty sure the jazz would win.

QQ says:
It’s not Scott who took the Nets to the Finals; it’s a mercurial point guard named Jason Kidd. Cmon, is this even worthy of a discussion? Kidd singlehandedly transformed the Nets.
But going back to Sloan, he helped two cats (yallready know who they are) become Hall of Fame players, while taking advantage of a very absurd yet simple play (pick and roll), riding it for years (no one can stop it) to NBA glory.
That’s a fucking resume of a great coach.

Wow you guys are morons. That quote from Sloan was complimentary in it’s highest form. He’s not “disrespecting” them at all. Everybody throws that word around WAY too much. Sloan`s just not caught up in the whoop-la of this `magical`run. He gives credit to the way their team is playing, and truth be told, what he said is true for the top 9 teams in the West. It`s not `HATING` (again, stop with these words), he`s just telling it as it is.
You people are annoying.

scott was fired and nets never got back even with jason kidd and a punk ass eastern conference with only 1 good team them years (detroit).
and look at where the nets were this year with kidd and look where byron scott had his team…1st place at the asg break.
who has rings…jason kidd or byron scott?
so dont go telling me/us that it was kidd who got nj to the finals.
can we say it was stockton/malone who got utah to the finals and not jerry sloan? if so..ur case is weak.

Hey YallAllReadyKnow……
It’s obvious your knowledge of the NBA comes from your video games (not the instruction manuals, I’m fairly certain they’re too complicated for someone as obviously undeducated as you are to figure out). If you asked the people who really know coaching, the other NBA coaches to be specific, Jerry Sloan would be one of the top coaches easily. Ask Doc Rivers or Popovich (who modeled his Spurs team/organization after Sloans) or George Karl and they’ll all agree Sloan is the best.
You need to go back to your crack buddies in the street who actually think it’s cool to talk and disrespect people like you do and leave commenting on the NBA to those who have a clue and some class.

having a job isn’t as overrated as you keep telling your babies mammas and your folks…..you should give it a try.
See the problem with people like you who barely are able to read is the comprehension aspect that comes with putting the letters together to make sounds, that subsequently make words. Trying to understand what it all means after all that effort you spend putting sounds together must be difficult.
I was merely re-stating what I’ve heard coaches say this year about Jerry Sloan being the best coach in the NBA. If you go back and read through it slowly, maybe ask someone there at the internet cafe to help you with the bigger words, you’ll see there was no comparison of the coaches mentioned or their teams whatsoever.
Nice effort though, you and “knowledge”, ha! good one.

what coaches circle are you in that you have the accessibility to speak to nba coaches reguarly? which one of them told you directly that sloan is a great coach?
where did you get the notion the spurs were modeled after the jazz? just wrong and untrue.
i dont have crack buddies nor babies mommas, so those comments don’t apply to me. and you have the nerve to talk about class on here. lol. douche. that sounds more like ur sons future.

you’ve probably never heard of the phrase “throwing swine to pigs” so I won’t go too deep for you. I’m impressed you pulled through an entire post without too much vulgarity, an improvement we all appreciate.
George Karl said it on Rome two weeks ago. When Popovich was hired at San Antonio, was quoted on numerous occassions in both San Antontio and Salt Lake papers that his goal was to do what Sloan and the Jazz had done with their continuity, team play, focus on defense, and long-term staff. Then when the Jazz last beat the Spurs he brought up that same fact. Doc has said it so many times over the course of his career I won’t waste anymore space.
Happy to hear you can communicate with the your hands so well, try using that same intelligence when commenting here instead of trying to sound gansta and cool, then we won’t all assume you’re a complete blathering moron and actually may (or may not) respect what you have to say.

This is ridiculous…there’s no hating at all in that comment. Jerry is PRAISING the Rockets. He clearly says that they’ve put aside their differences and come together to play as a team. See: “that’s what you can do if you pull together.” Look, NOTHING astounds Jerry Sloan. He’s the kind of guy that believes there is rhyme and reason behind everything. So it may not astound him, but he’s impressed by the way they’re playing. I would hope, Dime guys, that you could have the journalistic sense to look a little deeper into a quote than that. Give me a break!
