Tyler Hansbrough’s Number Will Be Retired

In the front row alongside #23 Michael Jordan, #52 James Worthy, #12 Phil Ford, #10 Lennie Rosenbluth (averaged 27.9 ppg on the ’57 32-0 Heels), #20 George “The Blind Bomber” Glamack, Jack Cobb (no number), and #33 Antawn Jamison, Tyler Hansbrough‘s # 50 will hang from the Dean Dome’s rafters.

After being named the Sporting News Player of the Year, Hansbrough became eligible for the honor. According to UNC’s bylaws, players can have their jersey retired if they are named Player of the Year by The Associated Press, the U.S. Basketball Writers Association, the National Association of Basketball Coaches, Sporting News, the Wooden Award or the Naismith Award.

Heading into the ACC Tournament, “Psycho T” is averaging 23.1 points and 10.5 boards per night. And by having his jersey retired in the front row, he will be placed in front of such Tar Heel greats as Hubert Davis, Sam Perkins, Brad Daugherty and Kenny Smith – at least aesthetically.

“There will never be another one just like him,” North Carolina coach Roy Williams said. “I am so lucky to be his coach. For the rest of my career, I will be able to look up into that first row and see his jersey … and I know that will bring a big smile to my face.”

too bad he will warm the bench in NBA

  2. YallAllReadyKnow says:

might as well. nobody else gonna want #50.
    not even david robinson jr

  3. kobeef says:

    Who’s Hansbrough?

(That’s what people will say 10 years from now when they look at the rafters)

  4. fiyaman says:

    lol@YallAllReadyKnow

  5. foscheezeeee says:

Christian Leattner with athleticism. Could be valuable off the bench in the league.

  6. Dave says:

He’s a little taller version of Mark Madsen, and his career will play out the same way…. a scrappy role player coming off the bench with lots of energy.

  7. dagwaller says:

I think we already went over Hansbrough’s potential in the League, but no reason not to hang his jersey up there.

  8. IGP says:

Why does everyone think he will be such a bad pro?

  9. foscheezeeee says:

He won’t be a bad pro. But against the likes of Stat,Duncan,Boozer,Gasol, etc. and even some of the average PF’s in the league he would get his lunch eaten. He has a motor tho, so that will get him PT ala Eduardo Najera

  10. gary says:

didnt they retire brandon haywoods #??

  11. MoxWestCoastRep says:

Because you cant get by in the L with limited athletic ability combined with limited offensive skills. He is scrappy and stronger than a lot of bigs in college but its all about length and athleticism in the NBA.
Good call scheezeee he is like najera. He could be a good cheerleader/hustle guy on a squad. Doesnt have all-star ability.

  12. AllDayJay says:

i believe we should wait and see what happens when he comes to the league. I believe he will have a solid career in the league but i don’t think he’s better than David Lee who is improving his offensive game of late and is one of the quickest Power Forwards i’ve seen hansborough will not catch up with him …that’s just my opinion

^^ WOrd good assement, dude is going to suck pretty much. Turiaf would eat him up and thats who he should try and play like. Anybody picking him in the top 12 lost for sure. Tyler gets alot of gimmes and foul calls that wont go his way in the league, Word to JJ Redick!

  14. i Fux aka Etheraldinho aka Farouq Obama aka Cecil Cocksure says:

they Should have retired Rashad Mccants jersey cuz he was nice with it and gangsta! Tats all up on his Neck and back

  15. CDog says:

They need to honor Mccants first. Also Felton. And May (pre-bobcats bingeing). The fact that George Lynch, Vince Carter, Rasheed Wallace, Jerry Stackhouse, Jeff McGinnis, and others are not up their makes me angry. That front row should go to one of them, not Tyler, until he proves he is worth retiring.

  16. Bone says:

Hansborough will be a four time All-American if he comes back next year, four time All-ACC and probably two time National and Conference POY. His jersey does deserve to be retired.

If he goes to the right team, he could be a contributor (a team like Detroit, San Antonio) who’s schemes do not rely on athleticism. He will never be an All-Star in the League but he could give you 10-8 off the bench.

  17. kobeef says:

    “word to JJ Redick”

That is about the best analogy for Tyler’s NBA career I’ve ever seen. (thx I Fux)

You can’t compare college results to the NBA – it is almost a different sport the game changes so much.

  18. ERIC says:

I disagree with the Mark Madsen comparisons. At Stanford, “Mad-dog” averaged like 16 and 8 at his best and was always scrappy, no skill player. He’s worked hard and has 3 rings as a towel-waver.

A better comparison is a more athletic and energized Nick Collison. Hansbrough has thrown down some six jams – 1 on the 7’7” cat and a 360 on the break. He’ll have a good career, earn midlevel money and avg 15 and 8.

  19. Data says:

    CDog,
you get your number retired in college based on your college career, not what you do in the League. Players like Carter were role players and don’t deserve to have their numbers retired. As far as the NBA goes who knows what kind of career he could have. They call him Psycho T cause of his work ethic… if given the opportunity to play in the L… believe me he will work on his game every chance he gets… so don’t sell his career short yet.

  20. Muwu says:

Some people ask why do people think he will have such a bad career in the pros? Just take a look at another pretty good player in college who’s now barely clinging on to a roster spot in the NBA, Josh McRoberts.

  21. yallallreadyknow says:

josh mcRoberts was overrated in college and was never really any good.
just a white boy who played at duke. thats why he got attention, not cause he was any good.

who cares if hansbrough sux. he aint gonna be no worse than the worse the league has right now. whatever.

mike jordan and the bobcats will probably take him since all they do is wanna sign tarheels

  22. dagwaller says:

    Good call, data.

  23. Dre says:

Tyler has a serious work ethic so I can see him being a starter in the NBA not really a star. However he is about as atheltic as Boozer was in collegea and he works hader then him…. so who knows. I mean if Kaman for the Clippers can improve to almost All-Star status… anyone can. The UNC haters need to just take a rest

  24. doc says:

He deserve it he be horsin the shit out of them college dudes. It aint got nothing to do with the NBA so if he player of the year why not. I wouldnt want him as nothing more than a bench player though on my team. But I would keep Reggie Evans bum ass over him.

  25. Jim says:

Kaman is a monster and skilled, so watch it.

But people saying Vince before Hansbrough probably should stop rating college players’ legacies on NBA dunk contests.
Vince was #2 on that team. Also, there is no comparison between Hansbrough and McRoberts. McRoberts is a punk, Hansbrough is a warrior and is respected…Beasley said he models his game after Hansbrough’s.

    Not a UNC fan.

  26. doc says:

Jim please say Beasley tries to hustle like Hans and we might believe you.Yeah and Derrick Rose models his game after Paulas

  27. Jim says:

Doc, no doubt, I’m just relaying what he said, and I’m sure that’s what he meant. The link was off of this site a month or 2 ago, I think it was from a local paper interview. Regardless, it was obviously a media-spin by Beasley to look gracious…my point being no one says that about McRoberts, or would even consider it.
