NBA Hit List Power Ranking: The Lottery Teams

IMAGE DESCRIPTIONB-Roy’s Blazers are a year away.

Wrapping up the regular season, we rank the non-playoff teams. Come back later today for the playoff team rankings heading into the postseason.

30. Miami Heat (15-67) — Who here is worth keeping? Obviously D-Wade and Marion. Haslem stays because he fills a role that every team needs filled. Daequan Cook and Earl Barron (a 26-year-old athletic 7-footer) have potential. And we’ll give Dorell Wright one more year to show us something. After that, everyone else can go kick rocks. And that includes Pat Riley, who clearly has no interest in coaching a team unless he has at least two A-List superstars to work with.

29. New York Knicks (23-59) — For the Knicks’ final home game, Madison Square Garden decided to give away free food to its long-suffering fans. On a totally unrelated note, we couldn’t find Eddy Curry or Jerome James anywhere near the Knicks’ bench that night. But we did spot two 7-foot, 300-something-pound guys with skull caps pulled low on their heads hitting a bunch of concession stands throughout the game.

28. Memphis Grizzlies (22-60) — He won’t win Most Improved Player, but Rudy Gay deserves props for taking a huge leap forward in his second season. Rudy averaged 20 points and six boards a night, had 12 games of 30-plus points, became the Grizzly who’s entrusted to take the last shot in crunch-time, and his 46% shooting from the field is actually really good for the best player on an awful team.

27. Minnesota Timberwolves (22-60) — As much grief as everyone (us included) gives Kevin McHale, he did do a good job of setting up the Wolves for success post-Garnett. Randy Foye, Al Jefferson and Rashad McCants all played very well in the last month of the season, and Corey Brewer should be good when/if he bulks up. Plus they can get an impact player in the Draft with their Lottery pick. One thing Minnesota needs to figure out, though, is who exactly the #1 guy is here. Jefferson was unquestionably The Man for most of the season until Foye came back and forced his way into the conversation.

26. Los Angeles Clippers (23-59) — If they just ceased to exist, would anyone notice? Seriously, it’s actually sad that Seattle is having their team robbed from them, meanwhile L.A. has this whole other team that nobody outside of Frankie Muniz cares about. In fact, who would be opposed to just moving the Clippers to Seattle? Everyone in L.A. wants to root for the Lakers anyway.

25. Seattle Supersonics (20-62) — Last week on “NBA Hardwood Classics” they showed an ‘05 playoff game where the Sonics beat the Spurs at KeyArena. This was only THREE YEARS AGO! There’s no way anyone who watched that game would have thought that by 2008, that same franchise would field a terrible basketball team that’s most likely moving to Oklahoma by the end of the decade.

24. Milwaukee Bucks (26-56) — After being stashed in the D-League all year, rookie PG Ramon Sessions became the new Jose Calderon, averaging 11.5 points and 11.3 assists over the final 10 games with the big-league squad. During that stretch he knocked down a game-winning shot, set a franchise record when he dropped 24 assists in one game, and led the Bucks in scoring in the season finale. So that’s one positive.

23. Charlotte Bobcats (32-50) — When former #3 overall pick Adam Morrison comes back next season, where’s he gonna play? J-Rich and Gerald Wallace (Charlotte’s two highest-paid players) have the starting two and three spots on lock, and Matt Carroll is established as the designated shooter off the bench. Has a high Lottery pick ever fallen so far on the depth chart through no fault of his own? That’d be like if the Blazers lost Greg Oden for the season, did a sign-and-trade for someone like Emeka Okafor while he was gone, saw LaMarcus Aldridge lock up the PF spot, then decided they really liked Joel Przybilla as the backup center, leaving Oden with a serious uphill climb on his way back.

22. Chicago Bulls (33-49) — They’ve got some promising young talent up front with Tyrus Thomas and Joakim Noah, you just hope they haven’t suffered long-term damage from enduring such a disaster of a season. Especially someone like Noah, who thrives in a winning environment and hasn’t had to deal with losing very often.

21. New Jersey Nets (34-48) — Richard Jefferson was minding his own business putting together a career year, even getting some early All-Star talk, when suddenly every (Jason Kidd included) figured out the Nets stink. Since then RJ’s numbers have gone down every month and no one’s talking about him anymore.

20. Sacramento Kings (38-44) — Kevin Martin is The Man here, but on how many other teams would he realistically be the #1 option? The Kings are basically a team full of role players with one quasi-star (Martin) and one guy who thinks he’s a superstar (Artest). If they continue to be that, they’ll always be middle-of-the-pack.

19. Indiana Pacers (36-46) — If only Mike Dunleavy could play the Knicks every day. In four games against New York this year, Dunleavy averaged 31 points per. Since you know Donnie Walsh and Larry Bird will make at least a couple of deals together, odds are Dunleavy ends up in a Knicks uniform before it’s all said and done.

18. Portland Trail Blazers (41-41) — Travis Outlaw’s slow but eventual ascension to “legit contributor” status, finally paying dividends in his fifth year in the League, means the Blazers will continue to be patient with Martell Webster. We all know Webster (10.7 ppg) can shoot, but he’s gotta be more consistent with his stroke (38% 3PA) and continue to improve on every other aspect of his game.

17. Golden State Warriors (48-34) — Financial reasons aside (clearing up cap space to re-sign Baron and Monta), we still don’t understand why the Warriors traded for Brandan Wright under the guise that they needed him to help with their interior weaknesses, then stuck him on the bench all year. If Nellie had given the rookie more PT, we honestly think GS would be in the playoffs right now. Instead they’ve got a potential powder keg with the Baron/Nellie relationship, they’re back in the Lottery, and Stephen Jackson has all summer to wonder, “If only I’d been more aggressive offensively…”

#’s 16-1 coming later today…

I’m curious, has there ever been a young team with loads of talent, like minny, that has grown in to a title contender? I know the baby bulls were real competitive a few years ago, but it seems like you need to have a group of vets to make run.
So Minnesota is not close then right?

  2. yallallreadyknow says:

any team can grow into contenders. problem is the business aspect dont allow time for that no more. everybody wanna fire coaches, gms and players after 2yrs and not allow for the growth.

i saw on nbatv last week, that in 1984 the pistons had isiah thomas, joe d, bill laimbeer and coach chuck daly. they aint win a chip until ‘89. but that core was allowed to stay together for all them yrs leading up to that.
…you would NEVER see that again in todays nba. that team/core was able to grow (with the coach too) and finally they went to 3 straight nba finals

minny can be close, but they hella far since mchale and them other bitchasses dont know what they doing in minny.

…and who the hell keeps giving former celtic players gm gigs?
mchale aint shit, danny ainge aint shit and larry bird aint shit…
….but a dude like dennis johnson couldnt even get an assistant coach gig
that nba ‘good ole boys club’ is full o shit

  3. bigdoggchad says:

What do you mean you won’t see that anymore? Did you forget about a team in San Antonio? That core has been together for a while.

I heard the Bulls probably gone let Tyrus go. Good rid. I say.

  5. MoxWestCoastRep says:

That’s a good call big dog
Guess you just need smart execs like SA

As a Detroit fan in LA, I definitely don’t “want to root for the Lakers”. I

    @Dime
300 something pounds? Too slim to be Eddie…

Also, totally agree on the Clippers move to Seattle but it would be unfortunate for Seattle if Stirling continues to manage the team.

    @Mox
The Blazers are poised to make the type of “growth from young talent” leap you are talking about. With Oden and Lamarcus at the 5/4 and Outlaw/Roy on the wings + a draft pick they could really bust out. I don’t think Minny has the talent on the current roster to improve much.

Chicago is one of the most interesting young teams on this list. Hopefully they’ll ink Deng and I disagree re. Tyrus who has looked nice lately at the PF. A starting frontcourt of Deng, Thomas, Noah works well and with 2 out of the Hughes/Henrich/Gordon threesome returning they have some real talent on the floor.

  8. Boyez says:

NOt funny but hilarious post dime…….Go Tinseltown!!!

You must forget how everyone in LA jumped on the Clippers bandwagon a few years back when they got to the second round. Don’t blame you for wanting them in seatle. Especially if they can pull b-diddy or gilbert back to LA…

  10. MoxWestCoastRep says:

Good call beef, I like what Portland is doing. Hopefully they can keep that squad together for a while for blazer fans.

  11. GEE...It ain't no fun if the homies can't haAaAave none! says:

LOL Kobeef you could never be a GM for my squad. I am sure you are saying the same towards me about your team lol Deng/Thomas/Noah will get worked!

So you are saying Thomas looks good as of late when the games haven’t been counting towards anything?

Get rid of Thomas and get a true 5 and have Deng and Noah on side. That would seem better to me.

  12. yallallreadyknow says:

if the bulls were smart or had any sense, they would move tyrus thomas, kirk hinrich and larry hughes to indiana for jamaal tinsley and jermaine oneal:

    BULLS
    jamaal tinsley
    ben gordon
    luol deng
    jermaine oneal
    joakim noah

    PACERS
    kirk hinrich
    mike dunleavy
    danny granger
    tyrus thomas
    jeff foster

niether team made the playoffs thus yr, so they might as well switch it up and make this trade.
…one of you bums need to do the research to see if this can be done salary wise. get to it…thanks

  13. word says:

damn Yall you are right about that move still. I ain’t researching shit but you need to call up Paxson and tell his dumb ass what to do. Speaking of the bulls, who should they get to coach next season?

I still think Hinrich is #1 to go but send Aaron Gray with him, that 22 rebound game was a fluke, they should try to keep Thomas if they can though.

  14. A-Roj says:

Props to Andrew Bogut, while the bucks were Sh%^thouse all year long he came back strong after the broken nose. Even better with Sessions as the new PG

  15. MSkittle says:

Al Jefferson is the man in Minnesota. Golden State blew it with the J-Rich for Wright trade.
