Darius Miles & DeShawn Stevenson: The Wonder Years

Even by year-2000 standards, this McDonald’s High School dunk contest is kinda weak, but check out the names involved: Darius Miles, Omar Cook, Chris Duhon, Andre Brown and DeShawn Stevenson among them. Say what you want about Soulja Stevenson, but dude had BUNNIES back in the day. (And still does.) He makes the rim look like it’s eight and a half feet here.

    I remember not enjoying this one. And watching Omar Cook and Duhon’s dunks that lots of pick up kids can do was a good clue why. You will never see that tap the back board reverse DeShawn did, because it is hard as hell and because I think I remember him getting 7s and 8s for it.

    That was some weak shit. There are like 8 or 9 dunks that are just basic run up and two hand barely tomahawk. Miles actually looked good on one of his dunks, and Soulja boy’s boy had one that looked decent. The rest was pure shit, you can usually see better at a YMCA inbetween runs.

    This sounds crazy now but this is Deshawn’s NBAdraft.net profile from 2000:

    NBA Comparison: Michael Jordan

    Strengths: Special player. Extremly gifted athlete. Great ball handler. Very advanced shooter and scorer for his age. A showstopper. Can play the 1 or 2. Won the McDonald’s High School dunk contest. Super character. As NBA ready as any HS player in his class.

    Weaknesses: Tries to do too much at times. Learning how to be a consumate team player, something his idol Kobe still must learn himself. Gets criticized for being too fancy, still has alot of basketball to learn.

    Chris Duhon in a dunk contest? I would have answered that trivia question wrong.
