Hansbrough Staying at UNC
Tyler Hansbrough (photo. UNC)Maybe he realizes that life after Chapel Hill won’t be anywhere as sweet as it is now. Maybe he wants to add a championship trophy alongside his collection of POY honors. Either way, Tyler Hansbrough will be back for another year in a Tar Heel uniform, with his number already going into the rafters after this season no matter whether he scores a single point.
But odds are that he’s going to do damage his senior year. And if he posts numbers anywhere close to what he did this season, Hansbrough will blow past Phil Ford’s record of 2,168 career points at North Carolina. Psycho T is only 122 back of Ford right now. And he’s also within striking distance of J.J. Redick’s ACC record of 2,769 points.
Two of his partners in crime, Ty Lawson and Wayne Ellington will test the NBA draft waters by declaring without hiring an agent. If Lawson and Ellington stay, UNC will reload with a top three team in the nation. Wing Danny Green and Marcus Ginyard will be back, and one of the strongest recruiting classes in the nation should give Roy Williams some much-needed depth. Three top commits - Larry Drew, Jr., Ed Davis and Tyler Zeller should all contribute next year.
And with Hansbrough now coming back, you’ve got to imagine that Tar Heel nation will do anything possible to keep Lawson and Ellington. If they keep those two, they’ll keep their title dreams alive and well.

Smart young man. I wish more players would stay longer instead of leaving early just to sit on that fresh pine! I hope he does well next year.

K Dizzle says:
Great move. Work on what the scouts want, let all the one and done studs go this year then make your money in 2009. Already smarter than Kevin Love

PALakerFan says:
DUMN! Go now. Ask Hibbert about coming back to work on your game. He would’ve been top 10 last year and now he’ll be in the bottom half of round 1, if not worse. Tyler’s stock isn’t going to get any higher. Move on to the next challenge young man. The NBA awaits your passions and work ethic.

PALakerFan says:
Ask Matt Leinert how staying in college worked out for him. Went from probable #1 to #11 and Kurt Warner’s water boy.

see he’s smarter than K-Love. Got to give him that. He wants a Ncaa Title.
April 25th, 2008 at 3:40 pm
K Dizzle says:
cuz next year;s draft is sooooo strong. He’s barely a first rounder right now. He’ll move up next year. No Beasley, Rose, Gordon, Mayo, CDR, Dorsey, Bayless, Jordan, HibbertArthur, Alexander, Love. I can go all day. He’ll move up next year for sure. Who’s comin out? Evans, Jennings, Holiday? Way weaker draft
April 25th, 2008 at 3:48 pm
JA says:
The move might help out, and might not. He’s just out- hustling and out-muscling the NCAA scene right now. The only way his game will get better is if he plays (or at least practices) with better/stronger/faster players.

[sarcasm]OMFG! Your kidding me, a college prospect actually choosing 4 years of college over millions of clams!!!??? What is this world coming to? Putting knowledge and education over easy dollars and a contract…pfft…who does he think he is, Tim Duncan?[/sarcasm]
April 25th, 2008 at 4:31 pm
Dave says:
There is no altruism in this move, and I’ll lay odds that he won’t win a NCAA championship. He is just acknowledging that his skills won’t translate on the next level, and wants to “live the life” of a pampered athlete for one more year. Once he hits the league, all that is over for good.
I knew he wasn’t going to move up to the next level this year. He’s destined to become another in a long line of highly touted “hard workers” who turned out to be crap in the pros. If he ever averages 10 points a game, I’ll be shocked.
April 25th, 2008 at 4:43 pm
Kevin says:
It’s not all about draft standing, why are people even talking about “draft stock”. F that! I like university and I’m not even in his position, what does he really have to lose but a little money. Psycho T does it for the love of the game, gotta respect that.

palaker fan sounds like bill walton, it really doesnt matter if he stays or goes hes not gonna b a good pro.. 12th man at best

Bone says:
Look, the things that are knocks on him (his lack of athleticism, height, arm length) aren’t going to change. He is still going to be picked in the mid-20s, whether that is this year or next year. If you had a choice of riding the pine for an NBA team or being King of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, with a better than average chance to win a ‘chip and back to back POY awards, which would you choose? Especially when the chance at the NBA will be there next year?

Good call.
If Tyler could add a shooting touch he could be a really nice PF/effort SF in the NBA. Right now he is an undersized/under powered Centre..which is not going to work at all in the NBA.

Hansbrough will never be a star in the League, but I don’t see why he can’t be a Reggie Evans/Jason Maxiell/Kurt Thomas/Paul Millsap type - a dirty work guy on a quality team.
April 25th, 2008 at 9:54 pm
Dre says:
A bunch of people who don’t know ball… he is rated as a late lottery to 22 pick. He is more athletic then people thought that’s why he did all the 360 dunks and leaning one-handers. If Chris Kaman, Klieza and Najara can get shine in the NBA… he definitely can. He has way too much work eithic.
April 25th, 2008 at 10:05 pm
daquest?on says:
wow there u cant compare klieza with hansborough totally different ball players kleiza is a sf hansborough is a pf…najera can make the three, hansborough not so much.. and comparing chris kaman with hansborough?!?!?? u must b high on something

oh and austin maxiell and millsap are way more talented than psycho t.. though i could see him as a reggie evans type player
April 25th, 2008 at 10:25 pm
Austin Burton says:
Millsap and Maxiell are Reggie Evans-type players, just more athletic. That’s where Hansbrough fits. A backup PF (maybe a starter depending on personnel) who gets rebounds, sets screens and does the “little things.” He’ll have a decent NBA career.

speaking as a tar heels fan im kinda biased, but even if i weren’t, i would still have a hard time understanding why folks like to hate on tyler so damm much.
i guess folks see his super-awkward moves with the ball and that translates to them as: “this kid has no skills”. but he’s one of those guys that’s not pretty but damm sure is effective, he works hard and he can run the floor and finish.
and yes, he’s at risk to blow out a ACL or whatever next year and jeopardize it all, but think about it: if you’re in his position–with the opportunity to take the UNC career-scoring record and (hopefully) take the ‘chip in 09, that basically would give you a claim to G.O.A.T. status in Chapel Hill (which is saying something). That may be more tempting than the millions of dollars.
Plus, his Mom and Dad arent hurting for cash i dont think.

nbaroundtable says:
I think it’s a bad move by Hansbrough
He has so little to gain by going back. The extra year of experience he’ll get in college is worth nada. He’s already accomplished everything as an individual there. There’s no 3yr Durants or Odens to test himself against, there’s poorer talents and boys. He’s done that. He’d get more beneficial experience in the one month of an NBA training camp than he will spending a season back playing college ball.
Playing against college players, below par talents, won’t teach him how to be a role player (which is what he’ll definitely be first year out in the NBA and probably his whole career). And it won’t teach him how to get by with his lack of athleticism. There simply aren’t enough talents there to challenge him. What will he get? 5 games against NBA talented athletes? 5 max is my guess. Heck he’ll get that during summer league not to mention all the practices against his NBA talented teammates.
Nearly all of his flaws as a player won’t change. His athleticism won’t suddenly go through roof. It’s going to be near-on-impossible for him to improve his draft position because he can’t improve what the scouts fear. He can add/polish that mid range jumper but that’s not a big difference maker to the Scouts.
There’s no point in this as far as his NBA career. He just put it off and lost a year of better development. Not to mention bucket loads of money. I don’t get it. He must love being in college lifestyle because it’s not like he can’t get his degree during the summer time like Vince Carter and so many others did. Maybe he wants to be a star a bit longer.
Staying in college an extra year is doing nothing to develop his game.

who cares if he stay or not….was he hurting the college game, or will he hurt the college game next year? if any of us had the chance to play 4 years at UNC (or any other big school) then enter the draft and avg. 10pts and 5 borads a game…would it really matter…..or does everyone have to be a superstar.

Im just pissed we gotta go through another year of Dickie V and them sucking him off.
April 26th, 2008 at 12:13 pm
Austin Burton says:
I’m never gonna say that a player should go pro early when he doesn’t want to. Unless you’re living someone’s life, you can’t put a price tag on what feels right to him.
April 26th, 2008 at 6:21 pm
Dre says:
Wrong work ethic can get you very far. Karl Malone who was not known for great athletic ability coming out of college and he had no jumper. Kaman… what do you know about his numbers before the NBA? Klieza was an ok player in college who played a lot of PF. Najara didn’t have a jumper in college he developed that. Hanbrough showed he could knock down the outside shot many many times this year or is everyone blind. Work ethic can take you very far if you work ethic. It won’t make you jump like Carter if you don’t already have the genetics but it has made many, many, players who barely crossed into the NBA role players and some starters. There is a saying that talent gets you in the league, work ethic helps you stay.
April 26th, 2008 at 6:25 pm
Dre says:
Austin Burton is correct on where Tyler would probably fit in when he gets to the league. That is obvious for people who know basketball and are not thinking like a kid.
I think Tyler is signing a insurance policy that the football players sign in college. They only insure you for about 2 million and they only cover injury not sucking the next year and not getting drafted.

u must be a harcore nc fan if u think that kaman and hansborough are the same, numbers in the college ranks does not i repeat DOES NOTTTT translate to success or stardom in the NBA so forget that kaman argument because he will never b like kaman even though kaman put lesser numbers… kleizas game is wayyyyyyy different from hansboroughs game..could u really see hansborough dropping 40 points in the nba???

daquest?on says:
by the way kamans statistics during his college career 14.7 ppg 8.4 rpg and 2.1 blocks per game
April 27th, 2008 at 5:25 pm
Dre says:
I am a fan of basketball and I do not look at the game froma kid streetball perspective. Kaman is taller and you just proved my point. No one thought Kaman would be a star coming out of college… no one. Klieza played mostly inside in college, he was far from a Kevin Durant. Antawn Jamison was a mostly post player in college and now he can knock down the 3 and he had a few 50 pt games in the NBA. My point is, it is totally childish and stupid to say that he will not be successful at the NBA level because all of the people I named games changed when they got to the NBA. I look at basketball as a student of the game and not some star struck kid.
April 27th, 2008 at 5:32 pm
Dre says:
Had the fourth-highest scoring average by a freshman in ACC history (highest by a Tar Heel) at 18.9 per game
In ACC play he averaged 20.4 pts and 7.8 reb… those were his freshman stats… I really don’t think I need to go on.
This is not to say that he will put up the same numbers in the NBA but only a full would say that he definitely will not be a decent player.
April 27th, 2008 at 6:51 pm
daquest?on says:
i thought u compared kamans game with hansboroughs game and with succesful i meant a star or superstar the most he could b is a starting role player pf or a high energy guy off the bench
May 1st, 2008 at 9:48 pm
Dre says:
Ohhh, that’s what I was thinking bro… I thought you were the people who said that no matter how hard he works he will either be sitting on the far end of the bench or gone after 3 years playing in Europe. Yeah, I pretty much agree with that assessment.
